- In this sixth part of my series on stick floats I take a look at John Allerton and his alloy-stemmed stick floats. John was one of the all-time greats on the Trent match circuit and may well be the most successful open match winner of all time with over 1,000 match wins. There are stick float rods bearing his name from Tricast (I've got one and a fantastic rod it is, too).
His floats are available from www.allertonsangling.co.uk
Contact Tricast for more on his rods.
My two latest books, 'Big Roach 2' and 'Ivan Marks and the Likely Lads' are available from calmproductions.com
Hi Mark Thank you for all the videos you have done it’s been absolutely I have learnt so much about float fishing the river, the fish, the people and so lovely to see someone fishing the river and catching those lovely silvers.
Another fine performance Mark and as always full of interest and history of how the floats and methods came to be.
I used to make pole floats using Johns alloy stem stick floats. You could nip off some of the tip and superglue a thin plastic vane down into the float base. The vanes were mostly painted Black and i used them on a local reservoir to good effect catching Bream, Tench and Roach. The floats used to sit perfectly in the water and were far superior to other types sold as pole floats.
A very different way of using them.
I think he's back on the rivers up here , on the Ouse , Calder and Aire , he also turns up on the Aire and Calder canal along with the likes of Dennis White and Keith Hobson
Enjoyed the series Mark.
I’ve the John Allerton Premier match rod 13ft and a 13/15ft Normark Titan 2000 match rod that will be coming to the Hants Avon with me for a few days next week, weather permitting. Great informative videos 👍
Any particular venue in mind? Certainly a time of change with all the rain.
Winkton, got to phone Steve the keeper about conditions but will definitely be down
Bloody hell you’ve got a new landing net handle 🤣 What’s happened to your washing line pole? 😁
I've still got and use myh aluminium handle which is still usable after 48 years. It's advantage is that when filming with someone else around wielding the camera it will survive accidental tramplings! But I do have three carbon landing net poles.
very interesting series mark...by the way, if youve any allerton alloys for sale ill give you a good price...
I'm hanging on to my floats; a new version of the floats is available from John via Ebay.
@@MarkWintleFishing ok thanks..ill take a look at those
