The 350hp engines were Econodyne power curve and maxed out at 1800 or 1900rpm, and they required 9, 10, or 13 speed transmissions. Maxidyne 237 hp, or Maxidyne 285 hp (commonly called the 300) were 1200-2100 RPM engines and had 5 speed or 6 speed transmissions. The lower average RPM gave better fuel economy than other engines. They required much less shifting, with less driver fatigue. Many 6 speeds had two shift levers, one for the highway 5 speeds, and the LH lever for reverse and the compound Low. Some were air shift. Yes it had 5 speeds reverse. Very handy if you need to back long distances. The Low could be spected as a 14:1 ratio or 23:1 (often called a 7 speed transmission). Very good for starting very heavy loads, and soft soil conditions. I sold many R, RD, DM, an U model Mack's for F&C Truck Sales in St. Louis.
My brother drove one of those dump trucks with the forward/reverse lever, often hauling asphalt. The road guys were always scratching their heads when he backup up a long way to the paver, and was shifting gears as he went backwards. 😂
El Mack R 600, 6×4 que Diferenciales Tenian
Would you happen to know what HP rating was on the Mack Engine brake on the E6 series? I've looked for quite some time but haven't found any sales literature or service manual that specifies the power rating.
Thanks for posting that info, I had forgotten a lot of that, I drove the 350 with a 9, solid truck.
Have an R model with the 300 and 6 speed. All the gears in reverses is unique!
As the trucks got newer everyone hated on those. Now that truck is a gem. I like
Great sounding truck.
I really enjoy these no-commentary, or minimal commentary videos of people driving commercial vehicles. It sounds kind of silly, but I put these on the background sometimes while I play American Truck Simulator. Also makes for a nice sleep aid. That Mack R sounds amazing btw
It's wild what Mack did with their engines. Smaller than the competition yet the torque rise was way stronger. Always punched above their weight.
My e7 460 loves the rpms! Letter rip!
These old beasts make some of THE best sounds.
36 minutes of pure music from start to finish. Love it!
I used to love to lay in bed as a kid and listen to the milk tankers on Rt 17 in NY. Most were R models some U Models there was one driver who was an Owner Operator who had a R-700 in those days with bias ply tires that would sing me to sleep. Then my friend who was a chemical hauler bought a R-600 and I would help him work on his tractor which he would insist on paying me to help him out. I was just thrilled with the time I got to spend with him and his Mack.
I thought you looked familiar. I've admired that Mack a few times before. Passed that yard a hundred times. Looks good and sounds strong. Nice rig.
Little old R model sounds good😊
my guy joe. Mack raw and uncut. Stay safe brother.
Joe, this ASMR is absolutely amazing!!! The perspective is absolutely perfect, I feel like I’m right there in the truck going to dump a load!! I hope you will continue doing this perspective in future ASMR’s!! And I know they will only get better from here!! And that ol’ Mack sounds absolutely amazing and is fun to drive!! With practice you’ll get 5th gear nailed every time!!! Keep the ASMR’s coming my brother, I know they will only get better going forward!! And you are correct, my name is Sean. Keep up the amazing ASMR’s, and I will see you on the next one my friend!!!
Hey Joe, been a while. How are the other ASMR's coming along? I haven't seen anything new in a while, so wanted to check in. Please let me know ASAP, you know I'm hyped for more ASMR action!!
Made my day! Something about going to the dumps always brings a grin to my face. And with a R model... bonus points 😊😊😊
He respect and the way you treat other people is mindblowing thank you for your kindness God bless you in you endeavors. ❤
I'm too old to know what ASMR means. Great ride along in the Mack! Thanks! Can be one of the toughest transmissions to learn to shift. Forget about buttons and 18,15,13 speed transmissions!😂 Very tough to break too. Which is why so many big old school frieght and dump companies ran Macks! Thanks for the ride and be careful on the road.
That’s a fact, they weren’t race horses but they sure as Hell were workhorses ya just ain’t drove till ya drove two sticks
A older gentleman told me to add several STP's to Mack I had. Worked great.
Sounds like pure joy music to my ears …
Man this brings back some memories
Drove a 80 or 81 Mack R Model semi dump for a LONG time in my 20's Chicago area, thing kicked ass and NEVER got stuck in it once, but mine had a 10 speed Eaton Fuller in it...this brought back memories though ty!
Do you happen to know what automatic they would have put in a 81 R Model? Engine is an E6-350. A five speed. 14’ Tandem Axle.
It's mind blowing how well that thing appears to ride & run. Well done.
It’s a Bulldog Mack there incredible trucks drove many of them R-DM 600-800 RD tin nose dumps mixer rolloff packer trucks I absolutely love an old Mack truck
all the Mack five i drove had the gold bull dog . hauled freight upstate NY, TN, KY, and New england in 70s and 80s. i think the gold meant it was a maxadine. back then it was super power. keep having fun.
The gold dog at Mack trucks means that it’s all Mack components: engine, transmission and rear axles.
A pure Mack! @@efrainberrios8494
Call it pedigree, mack powered, tranny , n rears
Maxidyne
A _350_ with a five speed? I really doubt that. Mack had three engines that could be paired with their five speed: a 335/370, a sub-300 (I forget the rating, but it was the first high torque rise engine), and by far the most common five speed pairing, the venerable 300 maxidyne. The reason you wouldn't see a five speed with a 350 is because the five speed needs an engine with an especially wide operating range. Until Cummins came out with its efficiency version of the X15, Mack's maxidynes were the only truck engines that could be paired with a transmission having fewer than eight speeds. An engine with normal torque rise doesn't make usable power until about 1250 rpm, and they are all governed at 1800, so you get only 550 rpm in the operating range. That means such an engine needs a lot of gears and Mack's 350 horsepower E6 and E7 were such engines. The maxidynes made usable power starting at 1050 rpm, and could go all the way to between 1900 and 2100 rpm, depending on the model, so could get by with only five forward gears. Having so few speeds was the whole point of designing the high torque rise engine. A 350 would probably not be able to accelerate loaded in the bottom couple hundred rpm in the top three gears if it had a five speed.
Damn that mack truck got some balls lol 💪💯🔥
great video! love watching the old 5 speed work
You're the man bud😊 hope you and your fam is great.
Thanks for sharing! Haven’t driven one of those in years.
Thanks again for the ride.
As always, living the videos mate 👊
Found your channel recently, I enjoy your content but bring more of this! God Speed my friend.
real sound love it very authentic❤
Hi Joe show as viewers how you use the throttle and clutch ,you got a unique style of driving Love it.❤😂
Haven't been able to watch in a few days, recently got a job offer and have focused on that. Want to say that being away from the channel was hard to do haha, absolutely love the comfort your channel provides and will no matter what, always come back to enjoy a wonderful video👍
I drove a ‘78 UD mixer for years, twin stick. Talk about a bucking horse! Lol. Gotta use the entire foot on the loud pedal.
Drove an R model with straight 5 here in west Central PA pulling gas and oil tanker. Only Mack I ever drove and didn't take long to understand that the dynatard certainly wasn't on par with a Jake setup and was only really good to help speed up a shift.
Were you ever in the real steep hills? I always wondered how the super wide ratio 5 speeds worked in the hilly parts of PA/Appalachia. I've been up and down a lot of hills towing with a manual trans gas pickup and it's not pleasant. I imagine it's way worse in a big rig.
@@mmiller1188 Yeah we have some pretty good grades, for some reason back in the day gas stations were always built right at the bottom.
And you're right that was a miserable transmission for them, take your pick either too fast or on the brakes a lot to keep from blowing the damn thing up.
I'm sure it was all in my head but when I lifted my foot off the throttle it felt like that dynatard sped the truck up. I was pretty happy to move into a freightliner with a 10 speed and Jake's.
Extremely hard to take off on a hill without Dynatard if you have a 5/6speed.
Awesome video 👍👍👍👍
Pretty cool 😎
These made great redi-mix trucks. We had several back in the 80’s and 90’s before going to Ford’s and Kenworths.
Sick video 👍
Give it a second then shift to put it in gear these trucks were not meant to shift fast pace give it a pause then put it in gear and you’ll get rid of the gear grinding problem. Cool video 👍
Came back to hear more E7 Mack noise ain’t nothing like it drove many of these R models nothing like them Strong & Reliable
Worked a few winters plowing for my states DOT. Was put on a mack 6X6 one winter. SLOOOW. And 2 MPG while pushing snow.
Damn she started right up. My car cant even turn over in twice that time
What I love is watching this d00d shift twin sticks ..😁
the truck i learned how to drive in.
man i miss that rattle an sound
Me too Beamer. When I hear the sound of the Mack engine and the whine of the transmission, I feel like Im 25 again.
You a good man thanks for the video 👍👍👍👍
Nice video enjoyed it a lot, thanks...!!!
Well done cool mate last vid with the ford was a blast from the past from when I drove milk tankers for Northland Dairy Company here in New Zealand S line inters 400 big cams 15 speed road ranger. Used to love flicking the Jake's at 2200 downshift 1900 thru the range change just as I was turning in the gate and flick the jakes off at the imaginary line push the clutch in and coast onto the weigh bridge dead silent lol.
Awesome
Hey old mate im from australia i own a 1985 r model best truck ever only had a 300 hp econodyne but pull had more guts than my 95 chr with 454 hp got at a 470 mack vision now i still reckon it would out do that awsome video man keep on truckin
Ok....i was thinking your yard was in Horsham or ambler. The only place i knew of two stone arch underpasses are in langhorne. Now i know your yard. Just gotta watch out for that dang creek behind you! Good video.
Still mad @ you for Macungie,......sticker & air freshener helping ease the pain,.....you know how sensitive I am😂

Brilliant video man I just subscribe to your channel can you please do more like this one only a lot longer but next time absolutely floored because I would love to hear how high that thing can rev. Thanks man stay safe have a great one.
I got my n.y.s. class 1 license in 1978 on a 1974 r model 237 - 5 speed it ran great only had 65,000 on it
I wonder what the no walnut wood sign is for at 15:15, I have never heard of that before
The shift patterned on the heater box is for a 5 speed, and a Maxidyne
Love the R Models! Does seem a bit down on power. Maybe needs a little pump work?
I would love to make that a rear loader garbage truck with a leach body on the back
I use drive 5 speed mac with builders transport; wish I could find 1 forsale.
Hell yeah!
Those e7 engines have that sound almost like a e9 500 engine
Man that jake on the upshift drove me crazy good vid though
You don't have much choice.
Great machine. What engine It is using?
What’s the year of that R model it’s got the 3 spoke steering wheel I would say early 80s I loved those old steering wheels drove many of the R models,DM 600-800 series and the tin nose RD 800 series dumps mixer rolloff rear packer trucks I’m probably the biggest Bulldog Mack fan on your channel since I’m 7-8 YO I’m 55 now we had a disposal company out of Kearney NJ Petrozello disposal when I was a kid every Saturday morning I would wait for the truck to come on my block a 1964 Mack b 61 tandem packer and I would jump in the cab with the driver and go down to the end of my street and he would walk me back home to my house every Saturday for years i couldn’t wait for Saturdays to come sorry to bore you to death take care of that ole girl she’ll run circles around anything built today and last a hell of a lot longer
music to my ears miss my old r model mack that little 350 put a lot to shame.its not the size that counts its u gotta know how to run it😂
Can you do a tutorial on how to down shirt ? Would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advanced lol.
have a E6 with a auto for sale in new zealand at work
If he’s into trucks then take the camera up to JDM, or Tony DePaul and Son, or Corson’s Quarry to the Asphalt Plant he’ll be right at home!!
Why do you keep bumping that throttle pedal like that?... Good Heavens!... Maybe you need a heavier spring?....
It might need injectors if it won't hold power in high gear. Look at the exuast it should stand up as it exits the exuast under boost, not lay over
Well I have drove those old MACK'S all of my life and I don't think I have drove one of those 5 speed transmission most all of them has the maxedine transmission's with the low and high side and reverse on the second Pole.
What motor is in this?
Cummins big cam 350hp
That's a mack maxidyne
Should apologize to the people behind you for the black smoke every shift 🤣
Gentlemen, pardon my ignorance, but why 350hp on a single axle dump?
No ignorance at all, probably not necessary of course, but the truck was put together with multiple different trucks so I'm sure it just worked out being what they to use. But also most R model macks came with 300's or 350's anyway although the earlier 237 of course but I dont think the Mack 350 is too overpowered considering. But I understand your thought for sure
@@Only4Trucks Thanks, appreciate your reply. P.S. great videos!
29:45
I looked back at the camera? Lol
sounds like a 237 to me, maybe a 300 but definitly not a 350
Shifts really slow !😆😆
I can understand the upshifts without a clutch. But the downshifts? 🤔
Cant grasp it.
What's ASMR?
Nice seeing somone use there left foot for the brake. Only way to drive. Left for brake right for gas pedal only.
