    I'm amazed you didn't have to use composite lighting! I'm super happy that it can be this simple. And I'm glad you got such a gorgeous foggy morning shot :D

      @@felixkunze just to be clear, you didn't have to do any compositing? all that directionality for each face was from one light in one position? (I own your location lighting where you lit a family one by one.) Am I also correct to assume a 600w light would be strong enough to add enough pop to each face? thanks Felix!

    • @felixkunze
      @felixkunze  Před rokem +1

      @@smackdaddy9802 that’s correct. No compositing here (there may have been some just to get the right expressions, but none for lighting)
      600 w SHOULD be ok but remember it depends on your modifier and the conditions in the day. I was in fairly subdued light here.

    Great video! Thanks for doing this BTS. Looking forward to trying this next time I have a group in overcast light. Looking forward to more of these BTSs. I have both of your Lighting series courses and they are by far the best way to learn studio and location lighting.

    As always, I enjoy watching your teaching style, Felix. Your simple lighting to add directionality, along with the posing you did, makes this rock! Thanks for sharing. Did I understand correctly that Magnus brought your gear via car, and it had not been in the boat, for this one?

    • @felixkunze

      Indeed. But the location was very far from the car so we were limited in what we could bring

    I do have a question though, I want to get my first full frame camera as I have been using D3100 APC-s till now… so, do you think the D850 is still a good buy or I go mirrorless

    • @felixkunze
      @felixkunze  Před 6 měsíci

      It really depends, the mirrorless is going to future proof you. But the D850 is still a fantastic camera, one of the best. I used it on a job just recently.

    I've purchased the location series and it was super helpful. One question on this setup specifically - it seems like you were also feathering the light up, to avoid overlighting the boats and water - is that right? Also, with water, it's hard to tell but did you have to retouch out reflections from the strobe, or was it far enough away out of frame to not be an issue? Thanks!

    • @felixkunze
      @felixkunze  Před rokem +1

      Well spotted. Indeed, I try not to have the light shine too much on the water, for fear of horrible reflections, but as the surface was pretty smooth this day, I didn't have to worry too much. I don't recall if we had to retouch out the modifier, but in the past, yes we'd have to retouch out the actual modifier as well as its reflection.

    Thank you! May i ask how the distance of light affects how soft vs hard it is when mixing with ambient natural light?

    • @felixkunze
      @felixkunze  Před rokem +1

      My class www.thelocationseries.com goes into this in more detail. However, what I would say to answer this is that if there was no ambient light, the artificial light would feel like a hard light. But in combination the ambient and artificial create a soft light with a bit of a ‘pop’
