    Not sure Felix, your still hanging around CZcams, but if you are quick question. I recently purchased my first C-stand (Impact 40" turtle base - recommendation by professional photographer) and you're correct. The boom arm just has a round ending (not a hex end). I was thinking of mounting a strobe to the knuckle end. Now I'm completely new to lighting and fairly new to photography. My thought was to purchase a Kupo 5/8" baby pin connector to mount a Godox AD 600 pro 7+ lbs and 34" Cheetah Stand rapid softbox to that pin on the knuckle - Impact doesn't make a pin like that. Two questions: 1. Even if the boom arm isn't extended a lot (example would be "butterfly lighting" where you want to stand under the modifier) - would putting a strobe of this size out on a boom not be advisable at all (even with counter weight)? 2. If I purchased a second, smaller strobe, what pin connector through the knuckle would you recommend. My choice of first strobe is a long story, but needless to say my plans are to photograph dance in big environments and outdoors with dancers I know, and I thought I'd need the power to use with HSS outdoors and t0.1 short duration times and power indoors - and the strobe was available new for half price. For normal shooting, I realize now I need a smaller strobe that is portable, and easy to mount overhead. Thanks in advance if you get back here.

    5:34 That does not look right. The sand bag would be more effective on the side opposite the boom extension. Look at the pivot points as you pull it over. If the stand falls in the direction of the sandbag, it doesn't lift much of its weight.

    • @felixkunze
      @felixkunze Před rokem

      I know it seems counter-intuitive. However, there's two reasons: the tallest leg should be bracing against where gravity is trying to pull the stand. Given the choice of the three legs, the tallest is the one that makes sense, so if you place the a sand bag on the opposite side, the shorter leg, you end up with the sand bag not acting on the c stand until it starts to tip, whereas if you have it on the tallest of the legs, it will already be weighing it down. It's not perfect, but it's the best scenario, all factors considered.

    • @oneeyedphotographer
      @oneeyedphotographer Před rokem

    felix, what, if any are the differences between this "reverse mounting" (similar to the para 88" focused reflectors{Broncolor, and Godox}), and the "deflector kit" the fashionista that goes into the umbrella hole in the head, and covers this exact hotspot, re-directing this light into the sides of the modifiers. is one solution better, or for different genre of photography, one for food, the other for portraits.

    • @felixkunze
      @felixkunze Před rokem

    Hi Felix - would a regular old-school monolight (like BRX) do well in the reverse mount fitted on a deep octa 100cm or do you need smaller heads for proper spread (and not touching the inner diffuser?). Also, is there a video available where you compare these two speedrings (direct vs indrect?) Cheers!

    • @felixkunze
      @felixkunze Před rokem

      truth be told, the differences are small. You've correctly identified the only issue I've also found with bigger units like the BRX, they contact the inner diffuser, which can cause a fire risk. Taking out the diffuser is one option, but then you lose a layer of diffusion. Having said all this, in my experience the 'small differences' are actually big. Without reverse mounting, or using a 'diffusion plate', you don't get the full effect of the modifier. You essentially end up with a hard light in the middle that also has some bounce from the sides.

    I hate asking what your stop was, but you seem to have carried a very deep focus. The kid is sharp!

      I don’t have the file in front of me right now but I imagine it was prob somewhere around 4.0 or 5.6 but the wide angle compensates

    Great BTS video Felix… thank you. I especially appreciate that you explained exactly where your assistant was directing the modified light.

    Great video! Thanks for doing this BTS. Looking forward to trying this next time I have a group in overcast light. Looking forward to more of these BTSs. I have both of your Lighting series courses and they are by far the best way to learn studio and location lighting.
