  • I take a break from Black Powder and shoot some long range with the 338 RUM (Remington Ultra Mag). It's a fun gun but was really forgotten about because of interest in the 338 Lapua and the Edge. It is a great cartridge and can compete with its brothers and sisters. I score at 1050 yards

The 338 Rum is not forgotten!
I have a 338 Rum for many years a XCR2 Rem 700 with HS Prec stock and HS prec detectable mag on it with Timney trigger and M16 Extractor and Mag Na Ported I often carry it moose hunting with 91.0 of RL 22 and 225gr Swift A Frames at 3025 FPS. Kicks like a mule but really dumps moose easy at 500 yards here in Alaska.

You sir are the man. I’m a huge RUM fan. I have the 300 RUM and it’s extremely accurate and loves H1000 and Magpro. I will definitely look into US869. Wasn’t aware it was a slow burner.

Nice video. I'm building a custom rifle and will be chambering it for 338 RUM. I had looked at 338 LM, 338 edge and even 338-378. I won't be shooting it enough to warrant reloading for now, and the ballistics are so close, my choice came down to cost!

Bought a 300 RUM and 375 RUM when they first came out. Still load and shoot them all the time. Always wanted the 338 version. I put KDF brakes on both. I just spun the 300's off so I can use it for deer hunting without blowing out my ear drums. Shot a Phonghorn at a hair over a 1000 yards using 125 grain Noslers loaded around 3950fps. Every animal since has been shot under 30 yards with it.

What a nice long range place you have to shoot from and practice I only can get 300 yards but that is plenty for me on hunting rifles because I personally don’t shoot past that and I use old Lyman receiver sights no scopes old school for me . But I don’t have anything against them I use to use them and I use them on my varmint rifle. That is a really nice long range rig you got there.

What brought me here, my friend gave me a .338 RUM round, seems to be an old factory load. Where I live is incredibly odd to find it, longest feasible distance to shoot is around 300-400yds, and as a novelty overly-powerful rifle, it’s way more expensive than let’s say a .300 win mag so yeah, no idea what that cartridge was doing around here but a nice addition to my growing collection of weird and unusual cartridges. Also the largest game here, for those who may think it’s for hunting, is primarily white-tail deer. Adds to the mystery.

I have acquired a custom 338 RUM mine has a 28" McGowan 1-9" twist... has a Nikon X1000 4-16×50mm MOA scope.. was hoping to get some thing bigger to get out 1000+ yards
I am playing with the 300gr Berger with US 869 and have also played with IMR 7977 in the 285gr ELD-M... but find that powder to be a bit more pressure signs..
Still playing with it and want to go out to 1000 yard and out to a mile....

Hey, senor Morelli, you "beady eyed ol' codger you"!!! HOW do you get out to setup/check your 1000yd target??? By "SR71" (that's a plane of course!) so you can be home for supper?! Maybe by "pack mule" or "covered wagon"?! I've been known to knock out the left eye of a gnat at 1000yds with my .67 flintlock smooth bore horse pistol (no sights either!!!), but not too often! YA! Sometimes I MISS & get the right eye instead!! At 81, I no longer have a shooting range to enjoy, so I GREATLY admire the range you have. How did you wind up with the place you have? "Dumb luck"?! But I can always shoot my Daisy Red Ryder BB gun in my basement!!! The recoil is a little STIFF though! "Gesundheit"!!!
