- It took me forever to tak about the Datafrog SF2000, but as always dragging back a bit gets me to find out what mods are available when a system really needs it.
Special thanks to everyone, including Adalante Productions for the music, Novella for the Zoltan Artwork, HPRShredder for your continued support, and the rest of you know who you are!

retrozoltanspeaks.com - Hry
People on social media (mostly reddit TBH) bash on this device because it can only emulate 7 systems (2 of which are admittedly hit or miss depending on the title)... However this is:
-A sturdy device.
-With IPS screen.
-User-replaceable battery that is common enough to be found on pretty much any electronics shop.
-Can also hook up on a TV for coop/vs.
-And only costs 12-17 bucks (as of the time of this comment).
In my book this is called a great deal.
I guess those people have forgotten that Nintendo sold Game & Watch for 50 bucks and only including 2 or 3 roms in it?
I completely agree. I got a lot of crap for making this a mostly positive review. Oh well!
@@BobzAirgunz oh that’s bad. All systems or just Super Nintendo?
@RetroZoltan mostly snes.I tried the quit and restart but it doesn't work and some games refuse to even start back up.
Hi dude. Watching retro gaming channels like i never knew the games when they came out in my day? Now we got a POCKET SNES? Sign me up! Can this do CFW for other emulators? And maybe expandable memory, with hardware upgrades, as in replaceable onboard soldered memory?
I call them The Entitled Ones, not Gen whetever letter.
That thing about stopping and restarting emus does work, funny enough. It's like it works on memory or something, either way, it's faster than initial boot.
So looking forward to mine. In the words of Queen "I Want it All!"
Let me know what you think!
@@RetroZoltan Will do. So much potential, in my hands.🤩
Great video. Well edited, and informative. It would be cool to have something like this, as all the emulating I do on my phone, and touchscreen doesn't always lend well to retro games
Thank you so much! It’s cheap so why not right?
Very well done video. Thank you for uploading this as it was very informative.
Thank you so much!
Thanks for your heads up on being able to add games by just dragging and dropping them to the roms folder. I looked at the frog tool app, and it just seemed too complicated to use so I gave up. But now thanks to your video I can do it very easily. I really appreciate the tip!!!!👍
I’m so glad to help! I admit I haven’t played with the tool too much but yeah the roms folder is an easy way to do it!
@@RetroZoltan It really is a big help, thanks again!!!!!!
chinese handheld manufacturers often seem to follow the same trajectory. they start out making a quaint handheld that does well, and then they just keep iterating on it, developing new models, and growing.
it would be nice to see data frog come in with a new sf... the sf3000? add a headphone jack, reveal the chip for cfw, fix the face buttons, maybe throw in wifi, etc.
would be nice to have another company to compete with anbernic and powkiddy.
With those improvements you'd be better off just buying a more powerful handheld or an Everdrive-like cart for your preferred handheld since the price would obviously bump considerably from like $10 to $30 or $40.
i think you've missed my point. the point is competition in the niche is good, and we could all benefit from data frog iterating on their first handheld.
I've done it I think, push start and select together good review btw, I couldn't get an ambernic before christmas so ordered this one sure is value for money,
sweet! Sorry I’m slow! And thanks!!
Thanks for bringing up the ability to add SMS roms… I’ve been enlightened 👍
Def can add them right in the ROMS folder for easy access
@@RetroZoltan Since there is no dedicated SMS key configuration tool, I discovered that you can just configure SMS button controls by using the MD key configuration instead. It works for both.
@@maxpower9728 right! Makes sense! Good discovery!
I was about to delete this from my cart, then you showed the controller mods. I knew I kept those SNES controllers around for a reason, lol. I love fighting games like MK and SF, so the d-pad is a must be good.
It’s so cheap it’s hard to ignore. Never did the kiss though… I really should get back to that project!
A lot of game for the money. Thanks for bringing us such interesting hardware we want more!👍
Thank you for the complement!
Sweet looking device
Yeah its just not that good. You should really just take 40-60$ and get a device that's so much better.
@@jensheinke1344I think the rg35xx is a sweet spot for me
For a cheap handheld, this is definitely worth it.
Thanks for the review.
Awesome thanks!
One of the most impressive things about it to me, is that it's $20 and it has USB-C. I've bought high-expectation $150 headphones with micro usb. A nice feature for such a cheap handheld. But regardless, I was very happy with this purchase. The only con for me was not having a headphone jack.
So cheap right? I’m waiting for more from these people.
I see the shoutout! Sorry I missed it. This seems like a nice system for the money being so cheap, but personally, I'd just spend a little more. I do think it's funny there are wireless controllers for a system that is itself a controller. And the idea of accessories for a $25 system is also entertaining lol. Still though, for the money, that's pretty solid. You could do a lot worse.
You don’t need shoutouts but i went for it anyway. Yeah it’s like super cheeep
@@RetroZoltan I need all the help I can get lol. You have about 100k more views than I do on your channel you know!
@@HPRshredder holy crap is that true? I need to talk about you more… your stuff is way better than my nonsense.
@@RetroZoltan You don't need to! I'm just saying my channel isn't much larger than yours lol. And I appreciate the complement, but we do totally different styles of videos. Don't put your stuff down!
Would be cool once CFW is available, but I wonder if there is a way to get 32x games running?
You know, I never tried 32x. I may toss one in the BIN folder and see. Otherwise will have to wait for 32x
i have one question (mostly about gameboy advance), games are lagging but are pokemon games lagging? this game is quite simple. and if you upload your own roms are they lagging exactly as originally instaled roms?
Good question. I suspect a Pokémon game won’t lag too much. Since it’s turn based and all I don’t think it would be too painful. The emulator will act the same no matter what ROMs so adding your own won’t make it slower/faster.I hope that helps?
i am sorry, but can you replace this battery with regular AA acumulator or it just looks like this?
I wish you could. They look like AA but my hands are big so … yeah it’s not the same.
By any chance, does this update fix the SFC/SNES save state issues? For some reason, my SFC/SNES save states load/work perfectly fine, that is, until I turn the system off. Once restarted, loading the save states just freezes the system.
Well that sounds horrible. Ill take a look and see what mine does. More info soon
@@RetroZoltan Hi! Somebody told me that its because I was running firmware V1.7. A simple update to 1.71 fixed the issue. Thanks for replying!
Nice! You fixed it!
How do you exit out of a game I've seen a review and the customer said the only way to do this is power it off and on again,
Yeah you got it “start” and “select” at the same time.
Theres a gba fix, creating a new file path with a clean gba bios fixes the glitch. I know you have to use frogtool for something, but not exactly sure what, oh and frogtool will let you delete the menu music, change themes, and put different games on the home menu screens for each system. 👍
I admit I didn’t use frog tool. I’m thinking it may become obsolete when/if custom firmware comes out. Curious about the GBA fix though I’m in on that!
@@RetroZoltan the video showing the fix is here on CZcams but its in Portuguese, i watched it translated and it looks very promising. I just don’t have a pc to try and do these things myself.
Oh sweet thanks!!
Hi,
Iam unable to exit from any game when playing. Can you please let me know how to exit a game without turning off the device
I think it’s “start” and “select” at the same time.
Every time i Save the game in super mario world with start and select button its gonna freeze. How can i fix that
Like pauses the game because you technically pushed the pause button? It may be unavoidable.
So How can i save the game state?
It has blutooth? How did those other controllers connect ? ..id buy one..ok price for all that fun.
It’s not Bluetooth (sadly) it’s only a short range wireless that works with the controllers you can buy for it only. (But maybe someone can figure out a way to mess with it in custom firmware? Hard to say)
@@RetroZoltanOh!
I too assumed they'd be BT controllers, but since they're not then it's kinda pointless thinking beyond its usability.
Hopefully someone makes them BT-enabled. Google made their Stadia controllers BT-enabled after a firmware update which is available for a limited time? That's stupid.
Mine is on BT Mode already.
Yeah, I got a 14" CRT,and I just bought this, so, gamaing, AHOY!
Really hope someone tweaks this device and the firmware soon. It’s nice but has some quirks. After all, it’s only 25 bucks
Can more emulators be added to this?
Good question! Sadly no, but I suspect custom hardware will take care of this issue. I haven’t looked in some time but suspect there may be custom firmware already. Stay tuned… I’d there is I’ll make a vid on it!
I just bought mine
I love mine, I haven’t given it much attention lately though. Still want to swap out buttons.
Can you get Pokémon games for colour?
It will take them if that’s what your asking?
@@RetroZoltan I know that seen as I’ve got them on my iPhone
They will work on this yes. Is that your question?
It looks nice, has the right screen format. A shame the system is a bit too weak.
True, but for $20 you're getting a lot.
I wish in the 90's and early 2000's I had this as it has the retro consoles I grew up with.
@@PhilipMarcYT I'm not saying it's a bad deal. Just saying it could be a better system overall.
@PhilipMarcYT but aren't alot of the games too choppy and slow? It's like playing the games in slow motion.Does yours do that?
Can you watch movies with it somehow?
Not yet. guessing with Custom Firmware it might? happen.
lol it'd probably be similar to GBA 😆
@@PhilipMarcYT via the RCA cable I meant
i already mod the color buttons of sf2000 its more snes cause colored snes buttons are more familiar than north america purple buttons
I have been super lazy and haven’t even done this yet. You inspired me to get to it!
@@RetroZoltan yeah bro its worth it i have a powkiddy v90 and sf2000 but when i mod the buttons to colored one man o can't get my eyes of it nostalgic classic retro handheld good for display on a shelf ..you won't be sorry if you change that.
Does it play old mortal kombat games
Oh yeah… but they are ports to Nintendo or Sega
@@RetroZoltan so it has the megadrive one cause that’s the one I wanna play
Yep Mortal Kombat 1-3
@@RetroZoltan do they run good
Yeah they are good for a $20 handheld, there is a bit of screen tearing but no slowdown
Man I still haven't gotten this one and I just don't think there's anyone I would give this to instead of a v90.
Oh yeah is it possible to put a link to the SoundCloud page? Don't know if there are any rules about that.
Oh … v90 is better I think!
@@RetroZoltanthanks for using the music! I think it works pretty well!
@@Tebsteroni very calming!!
Emulation is not good on this one for most of the systems. This would be cool with a pi in it.
I thought Sega worked well but yeah lots of hit and misses. Pi zero would work!
Where do you buy the controllers for it?
Was able to get them off of AliExpress. Not sure if you can buy them separately though.
Oh! Found them!
a.aliexpress.com/_mt2nEB4
lol I dropped mine September 9th in the kitchen.
It didnt break :D
Hah! I knew it could take a drop!!
Can you use cheats on this?
Not that I’m aware of. The emulators are pretty basic and I didn’t see the option :/ I’ll have another look soon.
I own one with the p2 conteoller, for a while now, I'd say this; there 100% Are games on here that would cost more than 25 bucks new so yeah, worth it. And the EASE of two player is top of class over expensive emulators. Change my mind! Hehehe
Lol I can’t … the value is clearly there! I’m hoping they still make a Sega Genesis shaped one :)
Tg-16 ????
Sadly no …. But custom firmware could certainly solve this someday. Still waiting. :)
Also juist bought this for $22 NZD, so,um, yeaH AHA!
So cheap! Nicely done!
@@RetroZoltan I GOT IT! IT'S FREAKIN' AWESOME! So HapPPPy! (ME!, Mr Happy!)
Just thought I'd spread the love ;)
Would be a good device if it could play snes games good, because its litterally a portable snes...
Right? They kind of failed here. Still holding out that they make a Sega Genesis looking one with the same internal HW.
@@RetroZoltan any similar device you could recommend me? like, 4:3 and that can play some good emulator stuff? with no joystick preferable,
Hey buddy I wanted to chat a bit if we can. Best way to contact? I have an idea 😊
