Gåte "Ulveham" REACTION - Norway Eurovision 2024

  • After an intense evening and voting from the Norwegian public and an international jury Gåte was the winner of MGP 2024 and will represent Norway in Malmö with the song "Ulveham." Narrowly beating former Eurovision public vote winners KEiiNO and their new upbeat song "Damdiggida". As fun as "Diggi-Loo Diggi-Ley" that Herreys performed in Eurovision 1984 for Sweden, just in a modern way.
    In Eurovision 2024 held in Malmö, Gåte will perform in the second half of the second semi final and as it is also regarded as the weaker semi, chances of qualifying are sky high. Well done, Norway!

      No,autotune,it destroys the microtonality of the folkmusic,specially in her unike shanting naturetuned voice,ad black wild rythm. Autotune is an anatema in this old tonallity,will make it onedimentional,without mystic.

    The lyrics is based on an old ballad about a girl who is cursed by her stepmother. These old ballads can be hard to digest for delicate Europeans nowadays, so it's a good thing she sings in archaic Norwegian. There are different versions of the story in the three Scandinavian countries.
    This is rooted in Norwegian culture, and hits Norwegians in the heart, and that is probably the reason why we chose Gåte over a catchy song from Keiino which did not have the same cultural weight. Otherwise I don't think it is important for most Norwegians to win. It is more important to send off an artist and song that hits us at home. Then it will make or break - whether the European doesn't like it, we've given an artist the chance to perform on the world's biggest stage anyway.
    Norwegians turned an artist who got zero points in Eurovision into a national treasure - something he deserved to the highest degree. RIP Jahn Teigen.

    Overall I can agree with or respect most of your points here. But I do feel the need to politely point out one thing that you did: After hearing the song by Gåte you literally put on a different song that is created specifically to be extremely catchy(ie. completely occupy your brain), and it was also a song you not only knew from beforehand, but also liked, so your mind has a strong mental bias for it. Then you go on to talk about how you don't remember the song that's the topic of the video. What has happened in your brain at this point is that you've overwritten your short term memory, so of course you're not gonna remember the song that's not made to be catchy. And keeping that catchy song playing in the background also does not help, to the point where you get distracted by it, and even comment about not being able to think with it on. So this might be something worth keeping in mind for future reactions.
    That out of the way, I very much agree with your words "the first impact might not be the correct one". This was absolutely how it was for me with this one. But people are different, and I've seen a ton of comments from people that immediately fell in love with the song from the first listen. It's definitely riskier than something more catchy and poppy. Still, I think it's the right move: Not only is the song more representative of Norway as a whole, but it's also very unique. Instead of contending with other songs on catchiness, which I feel like 90% of Eurovision songs ever year try to do, it's gonna contend using completely different means: Strong emotional impact(in a purely musical way), it's ability to stand out from the rest of the songs, and how good their musical performance is. It is risky. But it's a risk worth taking.

  • @TannerBowman
    @TannerBowman Před 4 měsíci +8

    Yeah for me this song is an immediate and impactful song that stuck with me. Not in a catchy way, but in a, “Holy cow that was powerful!” way. With all due respect, from my observation in this video, I think the Keiino love/bias might be getting in the way of your listening experience… at Eurovision most people are not going to have heard Keiino’s song. That being said, I do think Gåte is a risky choice… but it’s one that Norway can be proud of. I think it does need some more memorable moments in the staging beyond the turntable. I’d love to see her taking us (via camera operator) on a journey around the stage stopping at points of interest that build into a crescendo of the set opening up.

    The song is based on a 1000 year old folklore telling the tale of an evil stepmother who turns her stepdaughter into various items like a needle, sword and horse, for all the people in the kingdom to use. When the stepmother finds out that the people like her she turns her into a wolf and curses her to wander the forrest alone. The only way to break the spell is to drink her brothers blood. One day the wolf finds the stepmother in the forrest and eats her heart, the stepmother was pregnant, therefore she drank her brothers blood and broke the spell.
    The instrument is called a Nøkkelharpe, key harp. A traditional music instrument. Remember Secret Garden and Nocturne in 1995. They also used this key harp in their performance.
    Gunhild also uses "kulokk", in some elements. Which is how the maidens used to call the cows back in the mountains.
    Thank you for a great review!

    4:15 .. it's better that way - because there are more than 3 months to the esc and every single "catchy song" will get worn out and cheapen by that time. The quality of the song is in discovering something new every time you hear it.
    Norway sent the best choice.

      True, that is the beauty of Eurovision as well. But the lack of a hook is my biggest concern in regards to Gate doing well in Malmö. Otherwise it is an excellent entry and I can understand why people love it so much. Wish them the best

    • @MultiSky7
      @MultiSky7 Před 4 měsíci

      @@EpixEurovisionGuy I know I'm no benchmark, but what I end up favouring in my favourite songs are never the hooks, but (as I call it) surprise moments (unexpected chords, backing tracks, orchestration, etc) and one more thing - they have more than enough time to make some adjustments (make it "even better") because the basic structure of the song is excellent.
      As for the "beauty of Eurovision", I don't agree - at least not anymore.
      It has become vulgarly over politicized and (almost) p3rv3rt3ed d3viant circus.
      One third of them is singing about witches and witchcraft (i.e. "spirituality"), second third is selling porn in the prime time under the "freedoms and rights" and the rest of us are too normal (asking for quality songs) and therefore dull.

    I think what you are talking about, witch is not Auto tune, is the harmonic voices, its an effect that duplicats your voice or instrument, then play it back 20-30ms later, so it sounds like there are more of here singing. its a good way to creat a powerfull vocal performans.

    I think Keiino can't get over that they won the peoples votes and not the jurys with their first performans in Eurovision, so they come back again an again on MGP to win it all. I'm glad they stopped here, I'm tired of this pop-music.
    Erica and Rob was more like someone representing Japan and their anime culture. The children liked this song. I disliked it. But for me, Gåte was the winner from the start. It's Norwegian, authentic, (and not all choosed to use the autotune, and I think for this song, autotune would not help at all) This is Norwegian folklore mixed with rock, absolutely fantastic.
