Definitely in my top 5 of guys who are still alive. I tell people about him all the time.
I got to say he's definitely in the very best he is in that area but I think once you get to a certain level of mastery like that it's it's a plateau where everyone can kind of hold their own amongst each other and jam trade riffs out let's think of it as a Mount Olympus or a plateau a Pantheon of the greatest he's definitely there he can hold his own on stage with any picker today

I think the thing I like the most about Johnny is how considered his playing is. He keeps your interest because he’s not just banging notes out to show off, he’s playing what’s exactly right in the moment. The sign of a great musician as a well as a player, two things in my opinion which can exist separately sometimes.
I met Johnny at a guitar clinic in Atlanta in September 2021, besides being one of the nicest guys you will ever meet, sitting a few feet from this guy for several hours holding your guitar was the most humbling experiences of my life. Yes he is that unbelievably great! A true virtuoso that has the ability to play anything he wants. It’s not a contest at who’s the greatest, but in my opinion he is the best player I’ve ever seen let alone learned from.
As a drummer, as a guitarist, as a songwriter. Every version of me watches this with so much respect, and every time I watch it I audibly say “what the actual hell!!?”
I just discovered smokin Johnny Hiland recently and hot damn!!! Go Johnny Go!!! He burns up the fretboard so good with those awesome chops! Bass player and drummer are not too shabby either.

Definitely inspired by Eddie Van Halen. If you know Ed with his in-depth playing rhythm and blues soloing, you will hear it right away. This guy is great,.
Johnny has recorded albums for "Favored Nations" - if memory serves, that's the label owned by producer and guitar shred-monster Steve Vai, himself one of the all-time greats. Vai called Hiland the most-versatile and best-rounded guitarist on the planet in one of his interviews. Granted, he was trying to pump up demand for one of his products, but that said, the guy isn't one to hand that kind of praise easily or cheaply.
What makes Johnny unique is his ability to do drop-dead accurate honky-tonk, western swing and Telecaster-shred country one minute and then pivot into authentic heavy-metal and hard rock the next. There are so few people who can/could do that.... and he sings very well also. Johnny's chops are phenomenal - Danny Gatton, Brent Mason, Scotty Anderson, maybe a few others - that's the kind of company the humble guitar giant from Maine is keeping these days. J.H. is also just a good human being, a thoroughly nice guy, funny and a blast to be around. I wish he was my next door neighbor!
