OMG!!!! This is the first I've heard of Johnny and I am now going to be a lifelong fan!! This guy just exudes joy and fun in his playing and it's very infectious!!
+destroyallguitars What? Johnny Hiland is blind? I thought he had a touch of nystagmus just like actor Pruitt Taylor Vince, didn't realise he couldn't see at all.
Have you heard of Clarence Gatemouth Brown? Great guy, musician, guitarist, and fiddle player. Check out his song Boiling Point, there is some amazing guitar picking.
I used to say that once I heard Yngwie I just wanted to break my guitar and throw it out the window... well J.H just rose my level of anger... God bless him
I love it when a musician looks like they're having an outer body experience while playing. They aren't just playing notes, they're visualising the music.
Honestly, I think this guy is one of the most most accomplished guitarists out there! Never tire of hearing his playing. Wish he’d come to the UK. Seems like a cracking guy too.
Here's what gets me about music. You see how he hits a really great riff and a smile comes over his face (and his bassists)? He did that for himself. He played a tune and joy was fed back. It's like tickling yourself but with tunes.
I've watched this video soooo many times. Always gives me good vibes. Johnny's playing is awesome but the fact that he loves that much what he does is even more awesome
Johnny is one awesome player! I used to see him play with band on lower Broadway in Nashville at Robert's Western World about 20 years ago. The G3 tour in 2003 stopped here at the Ryman, with Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, and Yngwie Malmsteen. Johnny came out at the end of the show (with Neal Schon) and "shredded" with all of them adding his touch of "Nashville" to what he was playing. They all had a good laugh...
Haha been a lifelong shredder copying EVH, YJM, Gilbert, Vai, Satch etc and I am now sat here humbled by the grace and sheer talent of this fella's licks and obvious knowledge. Just wow!
Mad respect to Johnny for becoming such a master of your craft w/o even being able to watch what you’re doing as you practice. Most ppl can’t fathom having that much passion and dedication for being the best player one can be, so I commend you for being such an inspiration to get off my ass and get to work!
This man is not only ultra talented but his playing comes from his heart and not from his ego, and you can tell. And it makes the whole difference. PS: embarrassing for me to admit, but I discovered this incredible artist only a few weeks ago and I'm 49!! Never too late to find a treasure.
It should be against the law to be able to play like that LOL. My fingers won't move a fifth of that speed. Forty years as a carpenter might have something to do with it.Great picking Johnny
Despite what he was telling his students on one of his videos about how he makes mistakes sometimes when he is playing, I have listened to Johnny live over a period of 2 years(20 years ago in Nashville) for probably several hundred hours at least and I NEVER heard him make a mistake, miss a note, play a wrong chord, mess up in any way whatsoever!! At the level of guitar he was playing then(just like now) this is phenomenal!!
Best thing about my NAMM show visit years ago was seeing him just sitting, chilling and playing some of the most beautiful guitar I’d heard. I was just getting some strings and going to see my uncle at his booth. Right there at my left just sitting there he was and playing away like it was nothing. Lucky me.
Oh my god. Please don't tell me that this stuff was improv... this is seriously making me want to throw my guitar right in the fire. Astonishingly good, how gifted can one dude be!?
+Mac I had a lesson with Johnny a few weeks ago, pretty much made me feel like giving up as I do every time I get a lesson off him. It's amazing to hang with him musically and personally. But one of the best things he's taught me is to find my own thing, which is what he has done and why he is so good.
What an amazing guitar player, so much sincere playing and feeling in his playing, he's really inside the music when he plays, love it!!! thanks for this
Jeff Beck once said it's a good thing all the guitarists in Nashville stay there, or we would be out of a job
FUNNY WORDS!!!!sSO TRUE!
growandgame , that’s really good,AND he’s right!
jerry donahue was british, stayin' in england, and jeff kept his job....however, i agree with that quote
Jimmy Page once said its amazing how quiet children are while they are being sacrificed .
@@tyronebent2333 care to elaborate?
Johnny disappears into space and time when he's riffing and then comes back and is pleased.... I absolutely love this guy.
i noticed that too. He completely zones out while playing!
OMG!!!! This is the first I've heard of Johnny and I am now going to be a lifelong fan!! This guy just exudes joy and fun in his playing and it's very infectious!!
that boy's got more licks than a cat's behind
yes Friend !! good observation : very true I have been thinking of that too
I don’t know what I love more: his playing or him just being happy and a nice person.
Don't patronize him, we all know he's ugly and fat and has these weird eyes
@@westerling8436 Maybe so but I'm sure he plays guitar better than you do lol..
@@eckhardt76 beside the point, ofc reading is hard but you'll learn eventually
"I don’t know what I love more: his playing or him just being happy and a nice person."
You should see what he'll do for a Twinkie!!
@@westerling8436 i'm not patronizing him at all, it's actually rare to see a musician smiling while playing tbh
You can just tell this guy has a heart of gold and pickin' to match
Is it just me or does it seem like country guitarists are vastly underrated in the general guitarist community?
Not really, Ritchie Blackmore once said if you want to see some real guitar players just turn on Hee Haw,
Never been, among players 30 and older.
Roy Clark, Chet Atkins, Jerry Reed....yeah the list goes on. I am not a huge fan of country but these guys are fantastic....as is Johnny!
Theodore Moore absolutely !!!!!
And to see a metal player J5 do the Nashville hybrid picking on metal tunes !!! Is fenom !!!!
They aren't underrated by people who get what it's about
i've never seen such a humble guitar jedi
a true shreddi knight
He picked all the feathers off of that chicken.
Know Music Man
Love that expression, KMM
buck buck bukay?
Your right, cant stop laughing
lol
He sure did! I'm glad somebody us carrying on the REAL NASHVILLE PICKIN STYLE!
He goes to his own world when he plays. Lovely and magical.
Lee Riley that’s just the heroin kicking in
@paperchasin23 :D :D :D That reply killed me :D
When he switched to the bridge pickup he went into the equivalent of sicko mode
I'm pretty sure that's a medical condition
@paperchasin23 hahahahaha
Yes, he is indeed blind, but he's gifted in so many other ways and he surely has one of the biggest and kindest hearts you'll find anywhere.
You're exactly right Cliff. Johnny is a class act human and a heck of a picker!
+stb "legally blind"
+destroyallguitars I don't even listen to country but Hiland just makes my heart smile, I can't get enough of his playing.
+stb Exactly...I've seen several videos of his where he LOOKS at the knobs of an Amp or peddle and makes adjustments.
+destroyallguitars What? Johnny Hiland is blind? I thought he had a touch of nystagmus just like actor Pruitt Taylor Vince, didn't realise he couldn't see at all.
this is the first time that I've ever heard of Johnny Hiland, but I'm now a fan. what a hell of a guitar player.
Neal elliott check out Smoke & Wine by Hank III
He's county royalty. Every country artists knows who he is. Ask Garth, Alan Jackson, Vince Gill, or Brad Paisley. They all know him.
Johnny Hiland wielding a telecaster is one of the most glorious sounds in the world
2:48 his smile so genuine. You can tell it's for the love if the music!!
FRICKEN WOW JOHNNY !!!! PURE BADASSERY SIR !!!! MY HAT'S OFF TO YOU!!!
I had to call the police after watching this. This is too much power for one man to have.
Greatest country guitar player. Keep country music alive.
You sir, have just brightened my day by 1000%. Good pickin with a good mood.
I wish Johnny Hiland & Greg Koch would do an album together!
My God, just fathom the epicness........
He can’t even help himself. He probably sat there and played an hour after the shoot was over. So awesome.
ya no doubt
True musicians and guitarist.
Have you heard of Clarence Gatemouth Brown? Great guy, musician, guitarist, and fiddle player. Check out his song Boiling Point, there is some amazing guitar picking.
The combination of perfection- Telecaster and Johnny Hiland
This man is amazing.......I love the telecaster!
I love this dude’s pure joy while playing
Every time I watch Johnny play I wanna chuck my guitars out the window. He's the master.
Amen
I used to say that once I heard Yngwie I just wanted to break my guitar and throw it out the window... well J.H just rose my level of anger... God bless him
Pick it up and start practicing!
Keep calm and play on!
Do it!
Just stumbling on this and, damn. Insane!
Me too. Plus he's blind? Wow
The enthusiasm on his face at 2:46 just shows how passionate the guy is about the craft. That's real happiness. Makes me happy. Nicest dude!
I cannot believe my ears! this guy is incredible WOW
Holy smokes, this guy can play.
he's amazing :)
Generally speaking metal guitarists suck.
That’s the best sounding Tele I have ever heard.
Love those smiles at the end of each piece
I love it when a musician looks like they're having an outer body experience while playing. They aren't just playing notes, they're visualising the music.
Even more so in his case, since he's legally blind!
I have always loved heavy metal guitarists but this guy always puts a smile on my face whenever I see and hear him play. Such a genuine person.
That tone is WONDERFUL.
What a wizard! So effortlessly smooth and melodically tasteful. Eat your heart out shedders
Honestly, I think this guy is one of the most most accomplished guitarists out there! Never tire of hearing his playing. Wish he’d come to the UK. Seems like a cracking guy too.
When he "takes it to the bridge" you just have to smile. It just tickles! Amazing.
My goodness what a fantastic guy. Blind!!! Incredible.
Here's what gets me about music. You see how he hits a really great riff and a smile comes over his face (and his bassists)? He did that for himself. He played a tune and joy was fed back. It's like tickling yourself but with tunes.
I love this guy, I need to listen to some of his songs, also what a happy person too, it just makes me smile, and also play guitar😄
I'll think of this guy every time king of the hill comes on.
What a pleasure to listen to!
Jesus! The finesse this guy has in remarkable
I was thinking that. Even noodling around every note is clear as day!
I can't get off these video's ! A true force of nature !
OMG this man is incredible. What an awesome soul
You can't help but smile whenever you see this guy play!
This guy is just amazing....could watch him cluck all day long !!!!! Can't wait for my Whitfill to arrive!
All I can say is WOW! So much country shred!
I don’t follow this genre and have never heard of this gentleman - blown away! Phenomenal!

this dude feels so happy. love watching him play.
Why have I just heard of this guy? "Good" thing we're quarantined so I can go for hours down the yt rabbit hole of his videos.
Ok, I never gave country styled music much of a look, but this guy is awesome...so full of joy and talent!! Wow!!
What i like about Johnny's videos is he really gets a kick out of playing always finishes a phrase with a smile ...
Thank the Lord for Johnny Hiland, and his telecaster! AMAZING!!!!
Have seen him up close at a guitar seminar years ago. He’s the best!!!
Holy moly that cat can play! I wish I was a tenth that good! 🤩
WOAH this dude can play for real. He is on another level
What I like about Johnny is he absolutely loves it! He's like a comedian who laughs at his own jokes...Awesome.
thehiptonics if he gets married, that’ll be his only option.
He has good taste too!
I love how Johnny zones out while he's playing and how you can see the joy he derives from performing. Awesome!
It's not that he's zoning out, he's blind.
He's blind.

I love this man's playing.
Many blessings to you Johnny.
Marvelous playing! God bless you, Johnny Hiland.
Johnny Hiland is easily in top 10 living electric guitar players alive. His versatility is astounding!!!
Mad respect to Johnny for becoming such a master of your craft w/o even being able to watch what you’re doing as you practice. Big bad Johnny H, ladies and gentlemen! Damn, dude. That was stellar playing.
Doesn’t get any better folks. Seems like a hell of a guy too!!

Just discovered him now myself.
Johnny is absolutely incredible
Johnny you sir are one beautiful guitar player dude! Excellent!
It should be against the law to be able to play like that LOL. My fingers won't move a fifth of that speed. Forty years as a carpenter might have something to do with it.Great picking Johnny
If it makes you feel any better, you can probably do carpentry in a way that Johnny Hiland can't even imagine... We're all good at what we practice.
peepeeland Very good point!
yep. thats right, bill. pure Dope with a capitol D. be sure and turn the lights off when you finally head for austin.
I think it is but they look the other way when Johnny plays.
William Castleberry
Damn this guy is such a great player. Just awesome dynamics and timing. Really precise yet still maintains the human element

I've played 7 nights a week for 20 years ....As a guitarist ,vocalist, front man.....I think I'll hire this guy to give me a helping hand WOW !!!!!
Johnny if I'm having a bad day u make me smile.
Sounds insanely good! That high mid sheet metal sound is still spectacular.

I met Johnny back around 96 when him and his buddy Sid came to Nashville..

When he said,"Danny Gatton."
Killer playing and tone!!!! Fantastic

Absolute beast of a picker. He can play anything, he's at a level 99% of players on dream of getting to in their playing.
Just had my face melted by Johnny Highland, Hells Yes!!
Johnny is just so smooth and clean....
Oh my god. Please don't tell me that this stuff was improv... this is seriously making me want to throw my guitar right in the fire.

Pretty darned gifted if J.H. is any indication! Man alive, that guys plays like he's double-parked, to use Chet's old expression.
Sheer love for the art shows on his face with every bar. This is soul cleansing stuff, at least for me. Thank you, JH.
Brother I could listen to you all day
He’s a pickin and I’m a grinnin! Johnny Hiland is amazing!!
What an amazing guitar player, so much sincere playing and feeling in his playing, he's really inside the music when he plays, love it!!! thanks for this
My telecaster just had a nervous breakdown!
ha - now mine refuses to come out of it's case!
Funny, Brad Paisley' tele had a nervous breakdown a few years back.
My tele just got sick too.
Lol.....😅🎸
How have I never heard of this guy?!?!?!? 🙌
His love of the instrument & music is fun to watch. What a talent!
He has a really original take on country.

This guy is an absolute master.
I wish I was as happy as this man looks
What a talented guy! I can't even play with eyes 😅
Well, I hope you're not trying too hard! Fingers are far more durable in my experience
