A few things on regeneration because it's an old mechanic. Per the rules, regenerate means "The next time this permanent would be destroyed this turn, it isn't. Instead tap it, remove all damage from it, and remove it from combat."
The regenerated creature taps when the regeneration shield is expended, not when it's created.
A single regeneration shield saves a creature from being destroyed only once, not for the rest of the turn.
Regeneration doesn't prevent damage.

Its cool that the host does rule 0 on camera, gives others who are new to edh an idea about what these talks are like:
"I use proxies, is that okay?" "i own a lot of what i've proxied, does that make it better?" "We're playing universe beyond commanders, that cool?" etc etc
Why does Universe's Beyond require rule 0? They are real magic cards that new players likely joined the game to try and play with. You exclude a lot of people by banning them, for no reason because they aren't immensely more egregious than any other commander product.
Just seems like a really petty thing for a player to get so salty about that they would exclude a player for running them. I get some people don't like them for being out of the magic universe, but they are only going to get more and more prolific with time.
@@majortomva4761 Yeah agreed, UB hate is pointless. It's never grounded in much else beyond copium for the fragile folk. That being said, it does make it incredibly easy for me to decide if I want to spend the time playing in a pod with somebody - if theyre the type that doesnt want to play with UB cards (even if I don't plan on playing any), gonna be a pass from me. Also why I don't play on Spelltable through the PlayEDH discord, theyve got some weird ban on ONLY Negan from the TWD print but essentially use it as a standard so that anyone else playing in their lobbies can try to hate out UB cards and point to that as "precedent".
Sean is mistaken about how regeneration works. Yes, it works like a shield, but it pops when the creature would die: instead it doesn't, all damage marked on it is removed, it is tapped(after it would die not as the regen ability is activated) and removed from combat. Notably it CAN take damage later that turn or even die again. The regen shields stack(preventing multiple deaths), but only last until EoT.
In the absence of its natural predator (Larry), this Sean has begun to overrun the ecosystem.

For the defense of the heart play, the trigger will sac it and he will search his library, but the trigger does not resolve to search until after priority is passed. River Song will not get the counter until both creatures have entered the battlefield. Sean would take 15 damage instead of the 16, which was still lethal as his health was at 13. I don't know his deck so I don't know if 2 creatures could save him but it could still change the game. To clarify: Lynch can't get the counter on River Song AND THEN double her power.

Sean's deck is excellent. It probably doesn't win as much as it should because it's such a threat it gets targeted like it just was.
I’m excited for this episode! Lynch it’s always good to see you wife on here. One thing I enjoy doing is playing magic with my wife and hopefully when my daughter gets older and can respect the cards I’ll enjoy teaching and playing commander with her. Keep being safe and putting out the content whenever you can.

So to all the haters saying creatures are weak to removal, wheres the removal in this first game? Where are the board wipes? They had two rounds to deal with Phylath and Lost!
I have played Elves for like a decade in any format they are viable in. How am I just now discovering Tajuru Preserver? That seems like at least a 1 of in Modern or Legacy sideboards..
Ahh, Defense of the Heart is not a “May” ability! Had to read it closely to see how that interaction worked. It’s surprising to me that it’s not a may ability, but maybe that’s just cuz it’s an older card 🤷♂️
46:35 Regenerate is not for the rest of turn it is for ONE instance of damage (combat or destroy) and is removed from combat.
When it comes to land destruction, every deck should run that and nobody should be angry about it. It's when we are talking MASS land destruction that there should be a conversation about it, because Mass destruction just slows down the games unnecesarily with no upside to it.
if i have land destructoin when i have 5 more creatures than my oponent, or a massive trample damager, i think it comes to more sense. i 've never done it but i can find it a upside fr.

You should create and sell a take-backsie counter. My pod plays with your rule and loves it. We just need a fancy way to keep track of it, like a coin with the number of take-backsie counters (one or two) on each side.
@Sean, your explanation of regenerate was slightly wrong. Yes it shields it from lethal damage until lethal damage is death, but once that damage resolves and the creature regenerates, if more damage is dealt to that creature during that turn or destroyed, the player would have to pay for the regenerate again. I love regenerate. It's an oldy but goody ability and is exceedingly useful for heavy board wipe decks, etc. etc.
Mana Drains the guy missing land drops out of spite, dies before he even gets the two mana out of it. That's some spicy instant karma! 👌
Mana draining a dockside is always the right choice... we all KNOW its always a loop. Even if its not the person that casted it, the dockside is going to be looped infinitely...
does the defense not trigger first, river song says when they search, but with the defense trigger on the stack they haven't searched yet
I had a grenzo deck once and it's kinda the same thing but cool I think Josh on gameknights had a grenzo deck to so cool

when red card comes out someone forgot to take 1 damage on his upkeep
defense of the heart would go off before river song deals the damage right? defense of the heart triggers and goes on the stack because of the three creature condition. Once it starts resolving it has to finish resolving after which the river song trigger will be on the stack.
Correct, the creatures would be on the battlefield before river song resolves. There are many pairs of creatures that could have let him survive, but any triggered abilities would resolve after River's so it would have to be something like platinum angel.

I really don’t like Noble Benifactor in the River Song deck because it’s a “may” ability AND they could search up a bonkers card out of their deck AND River Song has to be in play. I’m fine with being wrong about its worth, but I don’t play it in my build.

Should of drained the commander not the dockside
41:19 I think infect should be 13 for commander. This way it makes the atraxa infect deck not such a huge problem while also allowing infect to be more relevant than if you were to have 15. 15 infect essentially makes infect irrelevant at higher levels of play. My main reasoning for having the number 13 be the lethal amount is based off of the two most powerful infect creatures, skitheryx the blight dragon and blightsteel colossus. Having 13 would mean that you could survive 3 hits from skittles and a singular hit from blightsteel. Imo 13 makes the most sense out of any number, it even punishes people who would decide to play Skitheryx as the commander, forcing them to add cards that either proliferate or deal single points of infect in order to hike over the 13 (unless they're going voltron, in which case you just have to remove it anyway.)
Plus 13 is spooky : D I just think people are often hesitant to mess with the rules because they're worried about looking dumb, but in my mind 13 would be the ideal number of infect total.
Valid points. I think if you are a friend group or pod that is cool with that, just Rule 0 it in. If all parties agree you can try it out.
Since way before all the new Toxic cards my lgs had 15 Poison counters for the win. (House rules are posted on the wall in the game room.)

I disliked the first "modern" time age universes beyond. I truly dislike the ones they are making now, and at the speed they are making them. I hope Hasbro suffers, and someone who cares about MTG picks up the stocks.
