- A History of Hammered Gold coins with Unearthed UK , on a rather bleak, damp grey sunday why not do something a little different, why not indeed! here we look at a selection of Hammered gold coins from the medieval period and later and what you could possibly find with your metal detector from unearthed, i had to get that in! It's me Melanie, Bill Rigby, [still having log-in problems] many thanks for your call today, it was so nice of you to think about me and many thanks to the caller in Australia who, via you, responded to my article in 'The Detectorist; I have visited the sites you mentioned, I have seen pictures of the ring and now know that it was not a specially made 'one-off' but a ring produced early in WW2, it is apparently rare and seems to be a collectors item, but it is not for sale as it is already promised to one of my grandsons who is prominent in one of the WW2 re-enactment brigades. Give my regards to Graeme and look forwards to seeing his smiling face on Tuesday.

Lovely gold coins I remember finding my first gold which was a dukat from the Netherlands found on pasture dated 1802.

Great video, very informative. I've only ever found part of a counterfeit noble, still had the heart racing at the time though as the gold plating was quite thick, one day

Hi Graeme, I hope that you and Mel and families are well. That Noble certainly is a whopper Graeme! As you say, only the very rich and Noble ever exchanged them in number, and because the nobility were a minority, the real money stayed with them? The only gold hammered coins that I've ever seen and held are a gold Angel. found by a friend of mine, and a gold Stater that was found at a small rally many moons ago now. Gold is, in it's self, a wondrous thing. I think that it is warm, and alluring, yet somehow 'calculating' and dangerous also ....Thanks for showing these coins, and explaining some of the history that they represent. Stay safe my friend.

Yes sir, thankfully we can get on with our job of saving the past after the 2nd of dec! Just make sure you check out your area and what tier you are in but its pretty much systems go for individuals

@@unearthed-detecting-tv Well the covid virus for one, has I don't fancy getting arrested by the Police, Don't have any permissions anymore due to the farmers who allowed me on their land have sold up. Stopped going out in the pouring rain fed up of getting wet through and cold. It gets harder as the time goes by I'm 74 now and not as fit as a butchers dog used to be. lol.

hammered coins need to be weighed before assuming they have been clipped because they was cut out at the mint and if it was slightly over they would nip a bit of until it was correct weight just because it looks clipped does not mean it is . great show mate thanks

Hans Holbein, court painter to Henry VIII earned £30 a year (or thereabouts). I'm told only one gold coin has ever been found at Vindolanda; the logic being there's no point in paying anyone in gold to buy a round when the pub doesn't have enough change.

Sightly different in the roman times chris, gold coins were mainly used in bulk payments and paying off the enemy, the romans along the wall enjoyed many decades of peace until in house fighting took over
@@unearthed-detecting-tv Didn't start off so well dealing with that northern lot - but then what do you expect : ) Add in, let's build an extra wall - oops, lets move back again, pay rises, debased currency + inflation, Rome only wanting gold for its coffers and about 300 years of evolving occupation until they all decide to head South and the locals nick the bricks. Northerners eh! (so who's the dislike for the video?)

What happens when you find these? Can you just keep them without reporting? Genuine question
If they are single coins and not part of a hoard then its then between the landowner and the finder with regards to what happens to the coin, some split it 50/50, sometimes the landowner wants to keep it etc depending on the agreement you have in place
