Great video, Michael!
epic video!
Holo
Yo its been 20 years since my first OS that i used and played Minecraft was RTM-d!
Epic Video Micheal!
It’s weird to think that difference between 1985 and 2005 is the same as 2001 and 2021.
Yeah, I thought Microsoft released a new version of XP for Japan, since it's been 20 years. Lol
😭😭😭 I hate it
DONT BREAK MY BRAI- *bluescreens*
@Eren Yeager sad
:\
Man, just imagine yourself as a Japanese kid coming downstairs and opening this on Christmas morning 2005. Not only do you have a brand new upgrade copy of Windows XP Professional and a Windows packaging arts and crafts kit, you even have a booklet to put your Windows stamp collection, and to top it all off, a signed letter and photo from Bill Gates!!! Could you imagine the excitement???
I think most Japanese don't celebrate christmas
I’d go nuts!
@@AcobraBE They do, but the holiday (Christmas Eve especially) is more of a romance holiday than the traditional American/European celebrations
Info from WhyChristmas (I'd provide a link, but the reply would probably get eaten by the spam filter)
what kind of life you must have lived to be excited about a signed letter from bill gates?
I had that feeling when I asked for a copy of Windows 7 for my first computer build as a kid.
For reference, the 20th Anniversary Coupon's expiration date was April 30, 2006 (Heisei 18). This was from when Japan still used their Calendar system, which correlates to the Emperor of Japan.
On May 1, 2019, the Reiwa era began, and many Japanese newspapers, drivers licenses, IDs, etc switched from the Japanese system to the Gregorian system. When newspapers use two digit years, they're now referring to Gregorian years. However, the Government of Japan still adheres to the Japanese calendar system, as I read through some legal documents in 2020 and 2021.
I would love a calendar using the old Japanese system
The Gregorian calendar was being used at that time as well, since the mid 1900s I think it's been used. The Era names were also being used.
今も昔も、和暦とグレゴリオ暦どっちも合わせて使ってるよ
学校とかだと和暦が多いかも
This comment is two years old but era names and calendar systems are two separate things, and era names are still in use.
Japanese government officially announced the switch from the lunisolar calendar to the current Gregorian (solar) calendar in 1872. Different calendar systems divide time differently into years and months (hence “Chinese New Year”).
The era name is merely an alternative way to name years, e.g. the Common Era year 2024 is also called the year Reiwa 6, and is not called a calendar system itself. Japanese era and the C.E. have been used in conjunction. Usage of Japanese era names is slowly declining but the change is very gradual, and an official nation‐wide switch has never happened. Individual organizations may decide to change their document formats independently.
Also we generally avoid writing C.E. years in two digits. Confusable not only with 19xx but also with Japanese era years, it’s doubly problematic.
Do the common people of japan know what date/month/year in the old system intuitively or is it more of a novelty nowadays?
Oh boy, what a find!
Ok
Rarity: no spoilers!!

Based on the Japanese text, the other empty spot next to the Windows Vista empty spot is actually for the CD with the desktop theme and the video.
Correct! That is said in the video via on screen text
Windows XP getting this alone should show you just how influencial the OS still is
In all fairness it wasn't XP itself that got the special edition, it was the fact that XP was the current system when 20 years rolled by. But yes, XP was by far one of the BEST OS's we've seen to date!
@@comedyzone xp was good but not the best to date. XP had major issues with security. W7 is arguably the best to date b
@@DrakeDaraitis Couldn't agree more - XP was ONE of the best, but not the best. W7 was a fantastic mix of improvements.
95, XP, and 7 are the triumvirate of Windows
7 is what Vista should have been!
Pretty bold of them to advertise their next OS in a product they tried to sell a year before. Now of course Vista turned out to be underwhelming at best but no one knew at the time.
I try to frame it differently. If Microsoft never fixed their mistakes from Vista, we wouldn't have Windows 7!
@@abigaillilac1370 You mean if Microsoft didn't clamp down on lazy OEMs we wouldn't get one the worse versions of windows ever (yes I'm talking about windows 7)
@@Leonard_MT I respectfully disagree, though maybe out of nostalgia. I liked Windows 7 a lot more than Windows 10. I only really use Windows 10 now if I'm running something where I want to use SLI. Other than that I'm a Linux convert.
@Lex Baker me too. Some people consider Windows 7 to be a stripped down version of Vista, and that was true. Some features were removed, but it helps your computer run windows 7 better
@@Leonard_MT One of the worst versions? Windows 7? You're kidding right? Windows 7 and XP were the two best versions of Windows. Windows 10 is probably thee WORST damned version of Windows. It's a bloated POS with forced updates, ads, increased spyware and horrible compatibility not to mention shi**y stability.
Windows 10 is rubbish.
This is truly an amazing find, and boy, even though those CDs don’t include software, that’s one hell of a collectors edition! Maybe more than the XP Bobble Head collector’s edition 😉
Or maybe those replica CDs were just blank CDs?

Yeah, nowadays you get a boot up your ass, with spikes on them as a way to thank you for selling your life to Microsoft advertisements partners by installing Windows 10.
Yeah now there’re offering shit like windows 11
let's wish MS would do a 40th version in 2025, but worldwide 🤞
I've never seen someone being so excited to see a copy of Windows XP. And it's kinda infectious, makes the video much more fun already.

I'm actually surprised LGR hasn't covered this yet😄
But he covered Acer Ferrari $2000 Windows XP Laptop

The size difference might be just due to differences between the metric and imperial paper sizes.

Oh neat, never been this early before since its 1am in the morning where I'm at. That Windows Logo "window" to Windows XP was hilarious. Thank you for sharing this with us.
6:00 the packaging size difference could be a matter of standard paper sizes. Perhaps the US version uses "US Letter" size paper while the Japanese version uses A4 which is slightly taller than US Letter.

Awesome video! I just wanted to say since the video is still "new" and you may read this, could you do a re-scan of the origami boxes for the internet archive? The ones that you did are in .jpg and have a lot of compression due it, it would be nice if you could do it as .png with the highest scan quality possible, thank you!
Doing so right now! My scanner was set to JPG, haha.

Im still eager for an update on the Compaq Portable! How far are you into the project?
Given the Windows 1 and Windows NT were localized in Japanese first, it seems the MS love for Japan was genuine.
Already 20 years? Happy birthday Windows XP! You were a part of my childhood growing in the 2000s. As of right now, I'm using the Logon sound as my notification in my Android smartphone.
People in the United States think Japan always gets the coolest stuff.
Obviously they don't know how much cool stuff they got that others don't. It's Japan AND the US that always get the coolest stuff, while everybody else is either left out or gets it late and pays a hefty premium.
This is awesome!
I wish Microsoft would come out with a new version of Windows XP that's based on the Windows 10 kernal but looks and feels exactly like XP, that would be sweet!
Wish they had something easy to use for non programers.
You can make Linux Mint look like Windows XP which is probably the closest to that we're gonna get.

Windows 10 Kernel? They are all based on NT

And here I was thinking we would see a crazy re release of windows xp with new themes to commemorate the occasion. But then again why would Microsoft put out such a product of an OS they are at this point trying to prevent people from using.
it's like back to the future for windows. for a minute there i thought this was xp with an official service pack 4
That's such a cool box!

That was some peak their still falling.

Ahhh I was born on the 25th of Augustus 2001 at 3:45 in Eastern Europe, in America it was still the 24th so I am basically as old as this OS.

How about uploading HD scans of the origami boxes so we could build them ourselves

@@ttv_highping553 It's a pretty asinine response if you ask me. As I mentioned at the end of the video, the entire package has already been archived and the origami boxes are included in that. But I am making additional scans of them at the moment and will post the link in the description once I have them uploaded.
I honestly did not think this was a thing! This looks awesome and I'd love to own it.
11:30 Such great idea! Miniature boxes! How did i never came to that, you can basically print anything on glossy paper and create collection of for example DVD size boxes. Wont be "original" but will have vibes of originals with fraction of cost :)
My god, so rare!
japan truly dose get the coolest stuff
5:32 I suspect it's because US still sticks to the un-scientific 8.5" x 11" Letter as the primary size of printer paper, while most parts of the world have adopted the ISO A-size system supplemented by JIS B-size system, both with square root of 2 (~1.414) ratio. The most common size for daily office works is A4 with the area of 1 / 2^4 = 1/16 square meter (210 x 297 mm, or 8.27" x 11.69").
Perfect video Windows XP is my favorite

Actually, Japan isn't the only country that gets that many cool exclusives. Europe and Oceania also have those things...
Anyway, it's really strange that this fantastic version of Windows XP was never released in North America, Europe, Oceania, etc. I grew up using the US English versions of Windows XP Home Edition and Professional. It's also incredible that the final build of Windows XP is officially twenty years old now. Very interesting video, and great job on it! Keep up the excellent work!
Never said they were the only country to get exclusives, lol. But there are many exclusives only available in Japan, which is what I was saying. And thanks!
