KZ ZAT - Had everything to be a winner but.....

- KZ ZAT is the companies premier Hybrid offering, and In all honestly my expectations where high.
It has 9 drivers inside each shell, a single 8mm DD doing the bass and 8 carefully selected BAs to handle the mids and highs.
So although hardware wise, the ZAT does not dissapoint it's with the sound where things get delicate.
It's not that it's bad , but it isn't exactly great either.
Bass is shy and a little over delicate , while the mids, are fine at lower volume levels but forget about turning up the heat.
As for extension and that sense of space and air.....hmmm there ain't much of that..... things sound closed in and a little bland.
I guess you could make an argument that this was done to avoid the BA timbre , the fake sense of soundstage, but honestly there is nothing in the ZATs performance that makes up for that lack of sparkle. no
Compared to other offerings I need not go too far, CCA HM20 is still in my books the best hybrid from KZ / CCA , while the KZ ZAX or ZS10PRO X are more satisfying.
The KZ AS24 , the TOTL all BA set , also walks all over the ZAT, and even the likes of KZ ZVX, Dfi are all more coherent and musical.
I wish that what I had to say about the ZAT was more positive , but when the Castor Harman at 15 USD outperforms the ZAT at 90usd , there's not much that can be said!

Unrelated, but I like the matching cable you picked for the ZAT
My two major disappointment recently are the PR2 and this ZAT. They both share the same travel characteristics but ZAT goes several notch up. It was so unbearable that I contacted KZ and they were quick to agree to a swap. The new copy, while slightly dampened still sound too brash and lack of finesse, it seems it’s not just the pinna gain but harsh across the board. Then I remember hearing something similar with Konoka when switching on the ultra high treble, yet it was bearable with Konoka while the ZAT is several factors higher, so I think the ultra high frequency BA is the culprit here. And yes, it gets more and more irritating when volume is turned up.
As for the Magic One, saw that video review and I totally agree that this reviewer wasn’t being fair and was expecting too much. Maybe he felt the word Magic=Miracle. Transmission lines is fairly new in iems so I think Aful is brave enough to release the One as a technical demonstration of what they are capable of. I am very confident that prices will come down when the 3D printing of transmission lines mature and achieve better yields.

Im looking for a 50$ (like the q5 from EPZ). Never consider my self to buy a CCA before. However, the HM20 graph Impress me. But im afraid that Castor could perform the same with less money.

It’s astounding how KZ keeps trying to peddle their dogcrap tuned IEMs with no extension as being kilobuck killers. It was funny the first time but now it’s getting annoying. No one is buying it anymore and the proof is in the pudding, all displayed in a neat little chart
