- The roster has seen a few key players exit in free agency. They don't look as deep up front as they were when they won the Cup a little over a year ago.

Samsonov seems like such a Vegas player. Extremely volatile but super talented and you never know what you are going to get out of him. Rolling the dice.
holy cow this is on point
Samsonov plays a gambling style in net, so he should be a fit in Vegas.
@@michaelkirkpatrick7483 ha Ha !
Yeahhhhhhh, hope vegas enjoys him when he's unplayable...
I hope that wasn’t a pun lol
I've never thought they were a contender but in only a few years, they've been to two SCFs and have a cup to their name.
Lesson: don't judge the Knights by their roster alone
Contenders, yes. Cup favorites, I don't think so. They lost a lot this off-season, and I don't know if the replacements they brought in will be what they need. The top six gives me some pause as well.
Contenders to make the playoffs. That's about it.
So much this.
They have good and big Cs: Eichs, son of Karl and Hertl. They relatively young too. They built to win yoffs.
Sometimes losing a lot of players can be a good thing
@@jacked6especially with Stephenson and Marchy getting over paid
Vegas down the middle is Eichel, Hertl, Karlsson, and Roy. That’s not too bad.
They big boys. Built to win in Yoffs
All guys that are first line skill. I mean you could argue Roy is more a top tier second line guy but like he is only getting better. So it will be interesting.
It really all comes down to how healthy they can stay. Last year they literally limped into the playoffs and just couldn't keep their foot on the gas. The first round bounce hopefully gave them the extra time they needed.
Eichel is definitely worth $10 million. He's a very solid and consistent 200' player. I was glad to see Marchy win the Conn Smythe, but Jack was also deserving.
Eichel is great, but much more injury prone. Marchy never misses a frick’n game! Being smaller is a benefit for him - he dodges and misses the hits! Stone, Eichel and Karlsson get injured regularly and miss too many games. Petro and Hill missed a ton of games too! The team cannot contend with 3 - 5 of their best players injured and out at the same time!

This looks pretty accurate
Nah, Vancouver takes it again. Just swap your first 2. VGK fan
Those dark gray VGK jerseys are way better than the sweat-stain yellow
They’ll always be my favorites. So many fond memories from the first year!
I agree that if the Knights start slow, McCrimmon will get aggressive in wanting to succeed. I think this will be an interesting year for the Knights, and as a fan of theirs since day one, all the losses have hurt (especially Fleury, Smith, and Marchy), but I know they’ll bounce back and do alright. Great vid, Shannon!
As a Sharks fan, having the Vegas first round pick unprotected makes me want to see them fall off quite a bit this year but still hoping Hertl does well!
as a tampa guy, TBL is a gentler version of VGK when it comes to being cutthroat lol.
am not a vegas fan or hater but i really appreciate the balls of brass the organization has.
all starts with owner bill foley with his west point military academy background, combined with his business risk taking mindset.
golden knights might not be a favorite right now to be playing in june 2025....
but as long as they have their ruthless mindset, you cannot discount VGK as a dangerous p-off threat for 2025. 💯
Honestly, outside of Stamkos, the Lightning are not cutthroat. They just didn’t have the cap space for Palat and Killorn when they left.
As a Lightning fan, at least we don’t trade guys away while they’re signing autographs for fans or let them find out via social media…
@@bodhithomas5684 honestly, you don't know much about tampa if you don't think TBL is cutthroat lol.
seems many tampa greats end their careers else where. st.louis, lecavalier, richards, boyle, khabibulin and now stamkos.
because the tampa front office decided to move on as opposed to giving "thank you for your service" contracts the way PIT, CHI, WSH and DET did.
Or find out by their locker room access card being turned off@@GWh135
Logan wanted to be traded. He wasn't happy not being the #1. The fans were the ones blindsided by the news of the trade. As a big fan of Logan, I wish he would have stayed. He is a quality guy and it's definitely a big loss. He's got ice water running through his veins and he will be a star given the right circumstances. I hope he does well in Washington!
Better Eichel 10m than Huberdeau 10m.
Eichel’s price is fine as long as he is healthy when you need him.
Theodore scored at a 75 point pace last season, I think he's arguably there best or at least most talented player.
Can Eichel stay healthy?
Can Stone stay healthy?
Can Hertl make significant contributions?
Is there anything in the minors that can step up on a short term basis?
Answers to those questions will dictate whether Vegas makes the playoffs, last in the playoffs, and be a contender in the playoffs.
Stone can stay perfectly healthy until the trade deadline, then the injuries will rise up outta nowhere until playoff time
Can the knights GM cheat to add to their roster ?
Depends on goaltending. If it holds they will make the playoffs. Who they get when Stone goes on LTIR will determine how far they go.
I dunno if I trust Hill to be the #1 after the up-and-down season he had last year. Especially after missing a lot of time due to injury. Seems like Vegas always has issues with goalies staying healthy, huh?
Probably, depends on what the LTIR lineup looks like next season
In traditional Leafs fashion, Samsonov will have a Vezina-worthy year and take the Knights to the dance.
The goalie program at VGK is really solid. If Sammy if coachable he will be good. I will miss Logan...he's definitely a Dawg.
I still like the Steel Grey home sweaters!
Great stuff Shannon
I trust Vegas’s pro scouting and system… They’re a lot like Boston in that way since it seems like they’ll always be good
They have a great forward core and that defense is top 3 in the league when healthy (they have 6 guys who are more than capable of being top 4… They’re big and physical but bring a lot offensively even without a truly elite offensive Dman)
The X factor for this team is Hertl… If he can develop chemistry and become the player they traded for, this team should be up there for western contenders… They’re also a shoe in the add another piece or two at the deadline
As a Vegas fan, I’m just nervous in general
McCrimmon isn't done yet. There has to be something brewing in the summer and I know the talks have settled a bit on a Marner trade to Vegas but as THG said there's trade bait out there with the defense core in Vegas. Lets just wait and see...
If I were the "Arm Chair GM" I would roll with what you got right now and go from there, but knowing McCrimmon and McFee they always are looking for the next Big Fish.
No way Stone sits out another year to play 7 playoff games
Although Marty is getting older, he's one of the glue guys on the team. Some other guys are gonna have to take a big step forward if they are to have a shot to make another run.
The Golden Knights are best when everyone counts them out.
LV is like Kings during their run. They had a year between Cups. I predict the LV make it to at least the cup next season if not win it.
They’re tanking for the lottery seeing as the lottery didn’t change at all and teams can rest assured if they are lousy till March. They can tank from Feb on and finish bottom ten
00:11 "A lot of loses..."
*Yeah, we got a lot of 'em! [Incoherent shouting]*
If the Anaheim Ducks hadn't won that final game, I really wonder what the playoffs would have looked like.
I was glad to see Samsonov get out of the screwy environment in Toronto and come to Vegas. I am optimistic about a Hill-Samsonov duo in net. I think they will be in the top ten if not higher for goaltender tandems.
One thing I find fascinating is that looking briefly at VGK's cup roster, I can count only 4 players they acquired through the draft and developed into their cup winning team. Whereas looking at the Lightning Roster from their 2020-2021 run, I count at least double that for home grown talent they've developed through their system.
Obviously, the bolts have been around longer, the Knights had to build from the expansion draft, and I don't have a leg to stand on talking about championships as a Seattle fan, but selfishly there's something super satisfying I think about watching your org develop good, young talent and going on to win a championship with them. Will be interesting to see how and if that changes in the next few years.
Sharks and Flames fans licking their chops seeing that top 9 🤣🤣
@ScottStenlund-x9m They were a wildcard team this year WITH Marchessault, Stephenson and Mantha. It’s not unreasonable to think they might miss after losing those guys and not replacing them
@ScottStenlund-x9m Olofsson and Holtz on the 2nd line is not stacked lmao. They’re only stacked on D
Feels like they lost the most this offseason compared to previous years. Losing Marchessault is going to sting for a while.
If this is the price we pay for the 2023 Cup, it's one I'm willing to pay. I'm happy Stephenson and Marchessault got their big money contracts. We'll see how it works out for Seattle and Nashville. I'm guessing if Vegas slumps, they'll be trade deadline sellers, go into rebuild, and I can live with it.
We got the Cup.
Don’t be happy for that traitor marchessault he stab the team in the back could have had same deal in Vegas and lied about it
I don't see why they won't be able to contend. Their top-end players like Eichel, Stone, and Petro are still there. They also added Hertl and Hanifin last season...
They should be a given top 3 in the pacific (Edmonton and Vancouver being the other two). But hey, the games needs to be played - so you never know
They seem to Yo Yo every year kind of like the 2010s Flyers. Prob due for a deep run this coming year. This team does seem to get obliterated with injuries way too often though. Seem very similar to the Ravens and Chargers in that regard. Wonder if it has something to do with the type of players they try to acquire. I do think they extended their window of contention by pivoting towards Hertl and Hanifin. Watch them go and find a way to get Necas now.
Hertl has a lot of hard miles on his body for how young he is. If he can stay healthy, sure, but he has a tendency to play through injuries that definitely diminish his game.
@@ianhall6614 hertl is a beast when healthy same with Stone
I'm probably part of the minority, but I'd still consider Vegas a Cup favorite based on how much better they play on the ice than how they look on paper. Similar to Boston, Vegas has created a culture that allows them to bring in castoffs/ and turn them into significant contributors.
Prior to winning the cup, I would've never considered guys like Amadio and Carrier to produce offensively the way they did that season. There's obviously the unknown with younger and more unproven players now, but they seem to have a structured system in place that helps get the most out of them. This could be a great situation for guys like Holtz and Olofsson who will have the chance to play and contribute in more elevated roles. Even if their goal scoring drops, I think their defense and goaltending will be strong enough to keep them in contention throughout the season, finish 2nd in the division, and possibly have another deep playoff run in them.
Since when do they look underwhelming on paper? Among the best center depth and blue line depth in the league. Less so on the wings and in net, but C and D are pretty critical.
@@kftc1980 If you go back and look at their cup winning team, their roster didn't look as impressive as other recent cup winners like Tampa and Colorado, but they had a bunch of guys who were solid in their role and were committed to the Vegas culture/identity.
The same can be said for this upcoming season. While their center depth and defense have certainly become major strengths, their middle 6 looks weak on paper, which is why many aren't as high on this team this year. Yet Vegas always finds a way to either find a reliable player for a certain role or bring in guys who take advantage of those situations and become crucial contributors to their success. I'm saying that Vegas has always been overlooked regardless of how they look on paper even after winning a cup, and people need to start taking them more seriously
@@NHLchaos only less impressive from a top heaviness perspective, but from a depth perspective they were absolutely stacked.
@@kftc1980 mhm everyone underestimates their depth
Looks like mark stone is finally playing a regular season. Lol. Not a hater he’s great I just find it funny
the talk with Theodore early on wasn't if he'd win a Norris. it was how many would he win.
I think the loss of Marchessault will be felt. Playoff team still? Possibly.. cup contender? probably not without a bunch of luck.
This team is unpredictable, I can see them having trouble with injuries and none of their young guys developing well enough causing them to totally miss the playoffs but I can also see the young guys becoming total studs and Samsonov turning into a wall under the Sean Burke system. finishing comfortably in the top 3
Are they still the villains despite being outsted in the first round?
Every team is a villain to someone.
They are villains. It just proves that their sneaky tactics dont work.
@@NothingToPointOut24 they won the cup in 2023.
@@name-vi6fsrefs held their hands all the way
@@name-vi6fs Maybe I should've put dont "always" work.
I don’t think it should be much of a question if the knights make the playoffs in the pacific. Edmonton are the obvious favorites but behind them the knights and canucks should be the contenders for number 2. The kings I think will also be taking a step back this year and should be competing for wild card and outside of them I don’t really see anyone else in the west really making that big of a jump outside of maybe Seattle.
I'm a big Vegas fan but don't see their being a serious cup contender. I agree that their goals for per game will likely take a significant dive. I do believe that they have a good shot at 3rd in the Pacific division and certainly at one of the wild cards. I think Hertl has the potential to replace Stephenson's goal production. The big question is replacing Marchy's 40 goals. That's looking a little iffy right now. Some of the young guys will need to take a step up, and Barbachev needs a 25-30 goal season. I think the defense and goaltending will be solid.
Cup contender? Eh. A team you’ve gotta watch out for no matter what? Absolutely.
They're in a fairly easy division and probably the best playoff team from it so they're definitely contenders but not the favorites to win with the changes they've made.
The same Cats team that won this year is same that got pummeled by LV last season. LV has lost but gained as well.
Eichel would need to be a top 10 player for the team to continue to be a force.
He sure was in 2023 Yoffs
He can be when healthy, and with the right finishers around him.
sharks have VGK's first round pick unprotected, so I am definitely hoping they completely implode this season
They’ll probably get the 32nd pick & lift their 2nd cup, just to leave you feeling incensed and not wanting to watch hockey anymore
They're not going to implode like the Sharks did in 2020 (which gave Ottawa the #3, still stings) but good chance it'll be top 15.
Yeah could possibly be 10-15
@ScottStenlund-x9m they really need to figure out a way to get cap space bc if stone and Hertl can’t stay healthy how are you guys goin to stay competitive? Yes your defensive core is stacked which is vital but how can you rely on two inconsistent goalies (via play or injuries). I just think you should’ve kept Marchessault. You’re right they are better than the kings on paper Fs
The loss of Stephenson and Marchessault will prove devastating. I expect they will drop down a few notches, and will have to fight hard for a wild card spot. They could use Marner from Toronto, but who would they have to give up, and what kind of money do they have to give Marner? Leafs might want Theodore and Karlsson, Vegas would have to say no way.
Hopefully Hertl can keep getting better and Karlsson stays good. LV should be fine. They built for Yoffs with big Cs. Plus Big Stone, and added Hamilton on D.
I'm a big Vegas fan but do not consider them a serious cup contender. In fact, they likely will have stiff competition for either 3rd in the division or a wild card spot. They look solid both down the middle and on the blue line. I think the goaltending has the potential to be consistent and adequate. The big question mark is scoring depth on the wings. I can easily see Vegas dropping 0.3-0.5 goals for per game. It potentially could be a real problem and may put their chances of making the playoffs into question.
Returning vegas fan here. Definitely feel concerned after this off season. Not signing Marchy feels like a bad move. I'm no hockey expert, so i try to like mccrimmon do his job but i cant help feeling worried!
Marchy was offered the same deal as one he signed and lied about it fuck that traitor
in my opinion if Stone can stay healthy he could easily be a Selke finalist, Vegas needs that from him this season
Their Conn Smyth winner just walked
Reminds me of the Marlins after they won the World Series
And then they accidentally won a 2nd world series while trying to tank. Still one of the craziest things in sports.
No
Yes
I can imagine if they became The Florida Marlins of hockey. Newly expanded team that won a title few years later. Than dismantle the team giving away stars and become a struggling franchise. I was around 1 when the marlins became a franchise.
Playoff contender yes cup contender no
I think part of why the org was ok with losing stephenson was the hope that hertl and stone could get some chemistry going with more time on the ice together. they looked good together at first, and then hertl stumbled a bit against dallas. dorofeyev is my favorite from our young guys coming up and I think he's really going to step up this season. I'm not angry if we miss the playoffs this year, because it's not like you're gonna get in every year, this is a team identity rebuild in a lot of ways so I'm ready for losses in the 24-25 season. appreciate your viewpoint as always THG!
Play off contender? Yes. Cup contender? No.
Marchy being a pivotal locker room presence traded to NSH is scary.
LT who had better numbers than Hill traded to WSH to make a name for himself is scarier.
Samsonov picked up from TOR is the most terrifying. You never know what to expect from him.
It really depends if Hill and Samsonov can be 100%. We have seen Hill play his best (2023 playoffs, first half the NHL season 23-24 and 23-24 playoffs. Something I remember I'm no Leafs fan but back in March I was watching a Canes vs Leafs game and I remember at the start announcers saying how good Samsonov had been playing he was undefeated in the first half of March and had really good stats before kinda crumbling after Canes started to play good. But the point is. This tandem is a consistency tandem. It's either A. Hill plays his best hockey and plays consistent and is the main starter while Samsonov plays as a backup B. If Hill and Samsonov are both playing their best it will be split Hill as starter Samsonov as alternate or finally C. Where one or both are playing too inconsistent or bad at the moment and they let Schmid in to test his game after playing for HSK. But we have seen something interesting with Samsonov and Schmid. Both have a good build for goaltenders they are very tall and big. I think the defence in front of them has been horrible this past year. Everyone knows the Leafs defence despite having some of the best two way players in the league Marner and Matthews they still aren't great on defence and then for New Jersey again we already know how just not great it was last year. Both will benefit and play much better with proper defence and a better team. So really all 3 of these goalies being NHL ready and skill goaltenders. Is just can they stay consistent and will they use the best goalie in the moments they need to as the starter? I look at Thompson as a big loss. Hill being the bigger goalie more blocky and LT as the more athletic speedy one. But I do think having 6'3 Samsonov is good to go a tiny bit down in size but stay big like if Samsonov plays his best hockey him and LT can be close but I do think LT is better. But then having Akira Schmid who fits the build of Vegas tenders being 6'5 and a huge guy is also good. So I kinda prefer having Samsonov and Schmid to be honest. Again though. Consistent. Sorry for the essay lol.
They need save their picks and prospects
Well, D and goaltending usually get you the bucket.
The first line is still a monster. Eichel is a bit like Sid and McD in the sense that he can make mediocre and new guys look great. So the idea of moving Stone down to 2.line makes sense.
Atm its hard to predict them not to make the playoff from pacific. Its up to the rebuilding teams
to raise their game and compete harder.
Cup contender-no. Remove Eichel or Stone
and they look very vulnerable. Top 4 in central
will be extremely tough as usual, even tougher
when Preds also look more stacked. So yeah, west is weaker, but not the teams that get into the playoffs
Holtz and Olofsson will score what Marchessault and Reilly Smith would have scored.
If a couple of their guys take a step back, they may be in trouble
I think this the last shot season
Vegas will be a playoff team even with no LTIR but they'll need the cap space on the last trade day
They're definitely still a playoff team. They could potentially do some damage in the playoffs, but I don't really consider them a Cup Contender.
Eichel is the only reason they signed olofson. Eichels been a fan of him stating he can score 40 with his eyes closed. He just cant do anything well except shoot. As a 7th rounder hes clearly overperformed his draft position even to this point. But he needs to be used as a speciality player
Dev the pick
Again, Shannon, you forgot key players , Nick Roy who can move up and down the line and play center or foward also forgot Howden who did the same last year. I think you need a vacation in Vegas to get familiar with the team. I will take Hanifin over Martenez any day Hertal if healthy over Stevenson. Also have an up in comming defenseman in Korsack who showed he's ready to play full time. This gives Vegas the opportunity to trade one defenseman for a quality wingman if necessary. They also have more depth at goalie since picked up young goalie from New Jersey. Marchy who they will miss will be 34 and is a career 25 goal player, last year was an aberration.
Losing Marchy was a big blow, but Vegas will still be contenders (just not Cup favourites)
I dont think so
They didn't lose Martinez, he retired somewhere around September last year, just didn't announce it. Oh, he's still pretending to play, but he's basically retired. Totally fleeced Chicago with that 1 year he signed.
I think they are still a playoff team but not a cup contender. I hope they surprise me like year one :) Oilers and Canucks should be top 2 in this division. Korczak should get a lot of playing time this season. Theodore tends to be injured a lot
Maybe if Whitecloud has another off season or if Hague goes not great (since I thought Hague did good last year and in playoffs) maybe they use either Korczak & Whitecloud as two younger fast defensemen or Korczak and Hague to have smaller young speed and still pretty young but big guy. So maybe Korczak and Hague could be a good duo for a third line. But if Whitecloud plays at his best I'd say use him.
Can't stay healthy and imo don't have much in the way of goal scorers. They still got strong D (though old) and Hill can be good. Vegas is looking more and more like a bubble team.
Prolly
sure they are contenders. And I dislike them. It's not personal, its those shiny helmets

@@TheHockeyGuy ah right on, I was thinking just heading into this year
Sadly, yes
Choosing Hertl over Marshessault was mind boggling for a team trying to win…..
Hertl is really good! But heads up M is better especially if Hertl isn’t a Center.
Hertl is a center.
@@idthejc this review had him playing wing.
Why I said if he isn’t a Center not that he isn’t a Center.
I can't see Vegas being a contender if Victor Olofsson is in their top 6. He's horrible defensively, has the goal scoring yes but that lack of defense reminds me of a much worse Daniel Sprong. I think he'd be best on the 4th line and 1st PP unit type of guy. This roster honestly doesn't look that impressive, I wouldn't be surprised to see them miss the playoffs this year.
I think losing Thompson is going to come back to bite them in the ass somewhere down the line, potentially as soon as next year. He was poised to become their next #1 goalie, but then he got injured and Hill had that run of a lifetime, and suddenly the situation flipped and now he's gone for nothing. That trade is going to look like a steal for the Caps and an L move for Vegas, mark my words.
disagree. The team defense really makes many of these goalies. Vegas Drafts very well and always with defensive players. they buy forwards through trades. I like Logan but Cassidys style is a goalie friendly defense, He will not have that In Washington.
for reference. WHITECLOUD,KORCZAK,HAGUE and Theodore was a give me pick up from Anaheim.
This is going to be a developmental year for Vegas. Bring up the young talent, let them find their game(including Samsonov), get Hertl and Olofsson to be adjusted, then the following years should put them back in contention. If anything I think Petro needs to go for cap space and some unforced errors that occur. If that doesn't work, it'll be a real mass exodus next off-season.
Petro has a full NMC/NTC. He's not leaving unless he wants to, and with four kids under the age of 10 that seems about as likely as human beings figuring out how to breathe in space. Don't get me wrong, I think he's starting to slip too, but that NMC/NTC is how we even secured his services in the first place. He's on the boat for the entire voyage.
@@Alistor76 that's why I said "if anything." You'll never know. Could waive it. Probably won't. But maybe.
I dont really care if Vegas goes in the tank or not, but it will be very interesting to me to see if the fans show up if this team is in say 12th place and way out of a playoff spot in January.
I think fans will show, as a Vegas local. A lot of people are priced out of going to games, it costs a lot for nosebleeds even. But if they start sucking, ticket prices will get cheaper and then people like myself and many other locals will be able to go.
@@jeremyballuff3634 I think if anything you'll still see the opposing teams fan show up, so the attendance numbers might not suffer too much. I went to 2 Knights game though and 1 against the Oilers was pretty much half Edmonton fans, and one against the Coyotes was all Knights fans and it was a really strong atmosphere.
I hope Vegas stays a success for the Knights but I think its always easier to be interested when a team is playing well.
the team's presence in the local community is insane. yeah there are bandwagon fans, but vegas is a hockey city now. people think it isn't because it's the desert, but our city is gonna support the team even if they suck lol
@@teikouarc I only question it because LV has so many transplants these days. I live in Arizona and saw the Coyotes crowds when the team was good and it was a drastic difference than when they weren't that good. Also tons of AZ locals have been priced out over the last decade or so, so its no surprise that the Cotes attendance became even more of an issue.
And LV is getting to be as much of a melting pot as AZ is.
That defence looks as steady as it can, but oh boi… that top 6/9 looks mediocre at best… and so many ifs… Hertl/Stone - injury prones… olofson/holtz - hope …
