    All the locos huffed and puffed. But try as they might, they could not pull the massive chair of the giant, Samuel. "Come on Thomas" they cried "Come and help". So Thomas hooked up to the front of the train and pulled with all his might. Huff Puff said the locos and gradually the giant began to move. "Yay for Thomas" they cried "You saved the day."

    I love the mad scientist aspect to this. It's hilarious, but you also touch on a lot of real world physics here. There's adhesion, rolling resistance, tractive effort, drawbar pull. Also a cause of motor burnouts; the locos vulnerable here were those that didn't wheelspin. To me that's a design fault. A model loco's adhesion should not exceed it's pulling power. Basically they make these locos too heavy nowadays.
    I've never attempted something like this (sadly I'm just not quite crazy enough!) but I do get my trains hauling quite heavy payloads of stuff around the garden. It's real railfreight in OO Gauge, great fun!

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  Před 4 lety

      haha thanks a lot mate - glad you enjoyed it, I guess there was quite a bit of that in there too! You're absolutely right about the adhesion vs pulling power!

  • @SussexHistory
    @SussexHistory Před 4 lety

    We did an experiment like this at school as part of Nuffield Science. We used an O gauge clockwork engine and a board resting on micro-beads. How railways work is they keep the friction to a minimum. In the experiment you have done, the friction produced by your own weight on the trolley wheels is very great in relation to the OO gauge locos which is why you needed so many of them. Microbeads have now been banned in the UK, so your only option is to make a hovercraft!

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  Před 4 lety

      Oh wow that's very awesome - yes you're right about the friction - it was just for fun though ;)

    I REALLY enjoyed this little trip that you took. As a 1/8th scale 'live steamer', I could easily relate to what you were up. The shame of it all it seems to me, is, that you don't have a bit longer track, for one. And, if you could put you trolley on the rails in some way, that would really cut back on the pulling resistance. Thanks for your interesting videos Sam.

      Actually it was Hornby Dublo demonstrating the power of the new Ringfield motor in the Deltic. Three loco's hauled a young woman weighing 8 Stone sitting on a trolley. I forget the weight of the trolley, which had flanged metal wheels running on metal rails.

  • @clivebennettHornbyDublo

    Hornby Dublo in 1960 using 3 Deltic OO gauge locos powered by the Dublo Ringfield motor hauled a young girl Miss Glenna Ferdinando weighing 8 Stone on a trolley. Good to see a modern version 60 years later using a lot of locos and a much bigger and heavier person - very entertaining Sam.

    I think the problem with the initial measurement (2:22) is that the pulling force is actually about 2x the tension on the string (it's a pulley system), so the reading on the meter must be doubled (2x6=12N to start).
    From your measurements, 20 locos yields a total of 8.5N pulling power; in the successful run you used 30 locos, so that'll be around 12.75N, which is close to the required 12N.

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  Před 4 lety +1

      Yes you're right, I got that one wrong - hence why it took almost double the number of engines! ;D

    By the way, this cannot be done with someone like me (I'm 216 lb and you look to not being over 150 lb, that helps) unless you have 50 engines, or try this with O gauge.

    This challenge is spectacular! I’d test my locos the same way but I haven’t the space.
    I should probably test the pulling force of my E4 some day. It’s a heavy 7mm brass loco.
    Also, have you ever tried to see how many locos can run in a multi-headed train? I didn’t know if that was possible or not.

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  Před 4 lety +1

      haha I wouldn't really recommend it - I didn't enjoy stressing out the locos! With a power supply like this, I could run up to about 40 - the only issue would be derailments!
      Thanks for watching - Sam :)
