- The hashtags "old money" and "old money aesthetic" have been viewed over 4 billion times on the social media platform, TikTok. Why is the idea of "old money" being so romaticized in the times of economic inflation? In this video we will be breaking down Gen Z's problematic romanticization of old money and the Sofia Richie effect.

People forget that Sofia was born rich with a famous father, always has been a nepo baby, the way they talk about her glow up it's like she was working at Wallmart and was lucky to find a millionaire husband out of nowhere
Let's not forget that there are just not enough rich men for everyone 😅
True, but Sophie didn't come from old money either. There's a difference in certain circles. Usually, children of old money marry into similar circles like Nicky Hilton; she definitely married well.
I agree with you, Sofia was not poor by any stretch of the imagination.
She was fkn adopted and is mainly LUCKY she got picked by Mr Ritchie or we would never have known her 🙄🤭🤷🏾♀️😂😂😂
sh's has her $$$ with sponsor and modling since sh's young, i don't think sh's need her dad $ or her husband?

Agreed. To be “trendy” you just have to live on TikTok
Yesss which is exactly why I won’t have one lol
Elliot’s father is Lucian Grainge the CEO of universal. He has built a music empire on exploiting black artist and putting them into contracts that suck them dry in contracts that leave them broke and exploited. All money isn’t good money, and we should be a bit more critical on who we idolize.
that part
No kidding. We shouldn’t idolize famous people anyway. Their PR team is behind a lot of why we like these people, but most of them are probably assholes. Don’t believe everything you see
THIS. I have no time for mega-rich people. Sorry not sorry.

Thank you for pointing this out👏🏾‼️
The thing with the " old money aesthetic" is , no matter how hard we try to copy how they look , the more ridiculous you look because these people know their own and its impossible to do no matter hard you try 🤷🏿♀️.I dont think people should take it as seriously as I've seen .Do it for fun not because you want a "wealthy billionaire aka blood money individuals" oop😂
You couldn’t have said it any better
A girl popped up on my tiktok and she said that they will ALWAYS know when you’re one of them simply by how you sit or how you eat at a table.
In a sense I get it. Old money is interesting on the outside. They do have this air to them of class and they don’t flash their wealth. It’s kind of like I knew someone who I had absolutely NO IDEA they came from money until I was just staring at their watch and saw that it was a Richard Millie (Idk watches idk if a watch person could spot that or not but). And eventually I saw their home. But like off rip nah. You wouldn’t know that. Knew of another kid (I went to a private college with a BUNCH of rich kids) that just casually talked of day trips to Europe and yacht parties?? I don’t think that’s a new rich type of thing. Not casually anyways. So I get the appeal.
But they all aren’t amazing people and like you said the money is not clean. The kids^ I mentioned. Spoiled brats, talked down on poorer people (who weren’t even poor but compared to them..), did drugs like no other and got away with whatever because they were legacy. The old Money families looking back probably got their start in the 1800s or maybe 1900s, usually off the work of slaves, free black people, indentured servants, immigrants and poor people. I feel like to us it isn’t old but take Jeff bezos and Zuckerberg. And Elon musk. They’re billionaires. Technically their own creations but became billionaires off of the work of poor people not getting paid or buying and selling private info. Their generations to come will be considered old money. And whenever you hear of the obsession with old money it’s usually with young people, not necessarily people who KNOW really what it is.
And as someone who isn’t poor now (well my family isn’t I’m a poor college student 🤡) but grew up right above the poverty line, most of the people I see obsessed with this old money thing are middle to upper middle class people. They’ve never had to struggle for anything but they want more. I’m not “jealous” of my friends and it’s okay to want better, but it’s odd seeing them complain about their “small” houses that have three stories, game rooms and multiple bathrooms meanwhile I feel like I can’t say anything because although I hate the one bathroom in my two bedroom home it’s better than being outside. I wished I lived in THEIR houses and they wished they lived in the houses of megabillionaires.
Yes, dressing up like old money is FUN. And that’s all it should be. I do think there’s a certain air around clothes. I mean when I’m in lazy clothes my aura is just that. But when I get dressed up, I feel better, I walk straighter. When I wear a gown, I feel like I act fancier and more “ladylike” so I’m sure dressing like old money will give you a certain act, but it should be just fun
@@kiki13451i enjoyed reading this. Very correct 👍 ❤
*their not they
You guys are also stepped on a look a lot of old-money looks like nothing absolutely nothing they're walking by you on the street if they close is clean and never dirty they probably could be retreating you never judge a book by its cover.
unpopular opinion but I don't understand why people are starting to glamourize paying thousands for plain clothes that look like they're from zara and looking down on paying the same amount for designer. it seems like people love to stray from what is popular at one moment to move on to something else and make it a trend. cuz it was all about being proudly luxurious before.
Thank you! If I was rich (like WEALTHY) I wouldn't spend money on clothes. I'd spend money on accessories because those can be passed down and go up in value as they get older. Jewelry, bags, etc.
@@mickeycobbler4451 Clothes can be passsed down too? I have great dresses from my mother.
@@talitam.8414Yea I agree but jewelry can be passed down for generation and not break down. Clothes need to be washed and go through a lot more than jewelry. Jewelry can also be traded in for large amounts of money even after hundreds of years.
@@audreyf9092 I hear you! But again you can most definitely pass down good quality clothes, made with great fabrics, or it's rare unique pieces, it's usually classic designer pieces that you can sell as well. Obviously I'm not talking about Gap or Walmart clothes. To give you the example of a famous person, just before she died Lady Diana purged her wardrobe (the year she actually passed away) and sold clothes she wore when she was still with her ex husband, Charles. She managed to raise $3M for charities. There are non - famous people who auction their designer clothes every day, check Southby's vintage fashion, you'll see! They have pieces that date back decades ago. People buy for their own private collection, for museums etc. You don't see the value in clothes but tons of people do! Same for bags or luggage. Hell! There are fashion historians! The fashion industry is one of the very few industry that managed to increase its revenue during the pandemic, and I'm talking about billions and billions of dollars too. Keep in mind that just because you are not interested in something it does not mean people out there think like you. You're into jewelry others are into clothes.
@@talitam.8414just want to say, just because I'm super into fashion history and like archiving, but in a few hundred years, the clothes you got from your grandmother WILL be deteriorated to the point of if they even still exist in a recognizable form, would only be able to be used for display purposes. There's a reason everyone got mad at kim kardashian for destroying the Marilyn dress, there's a reason very iconic historical pieces aren't rented out and are meant to be wrapped and stored properly. Every time you wear a piece of clothing, that fabric deteriorates. It's normal.
A lot of very old pieces that still exist today are from very wealthy people (royalty, nobility, etc.) Who didn't have to rewear their clothing the way the lower classes did (and even today) because they'd wear something for a while, get bored, and buy new stuff/have new stuff made and put their old clothes into storage.
Don't get me wrong, I think it's lovely you have clothing that was passed down through family!! I just mean that it's silly to think that clothing doesn't deteriorate faster than jewelry or pieces of art, because if it didn't, we would have a LOT more historical pieces all over the world, and they would be on display all the time, but because fabric can be affected by sunlight and the environment, most historic garments are only brought out for very special occasions (like the coronation robe in the UK, for example. It's extremely old, but it's used once a generation (for the coronation), and then put away in climate controlled rooms and the pieces which are of significant importance, like a coronation robe, are regularly checked for deterioration and restored.
I'll be the first to say how sad it is, because I'm a ho for fashion history and I'd love if clothes lasted forever and I could see what actual people actually wore throughout history and all over the world, like in the flesh lol
*sigh* I'm not fit for this conversation. Is NO MONEY an Aesthetic? Because that's ALL I got. Take it or leave it babes.

people are just obsessed with being rich especially gen z. instead of trying to be happy & to be comfortable we have become obsessed with fame and riches (which i blame on social media). the old money aesthetic is really all about appearances and looking rich. people just want to impress other online bc our generation is chronically online. that’s it.
Absolutely agree with you. I could care less I just want to live comfortably
I’m wondering if people had enough money and didn’t have to live paycheque to paycheque would still obsess about these extremely rich people. I just see it as a form of escapism.
@@adrianacernochovait's 100 percent because millennials and gen z have seen the cost of living skyrocket while wages remain stagnant. We have no hope for our futures, so half of us have turned to "eat the rich", while the other half contents themselves with living vicariously through these celebs and extremely wealthy people.
And the rich love it because it keeps us divided and keeps them on top while we fight each other for scraps.
And gen z often just like to complain about things instead of actually trying to change their own lives. Hate the situation your in? Then start trying to change that. Always complains about being poor but then wasting money on useless shit instead of saving that so that they can have some kind of help in the future.
@@yunhosparrotwhat a poor généralisation of gen z 🤦🏻♀️
No one forgets that Sofia Richie is the daughter of Lionel Richie (at least IMO). According to an internet search, Sofia has a net worth of 8M and Elliot has a net worth of 10M but his father Sir Lucian Grainge has a net worth of 250M and Lionel Richie has a net worth of 200M as you said. How people make money should matter, not just that people have it.
Actually a lot of people forget or don’t know at all given she’s white passing. You wouldn’t know she was biracial let alone Lionel Richie’s daughter unless you were a fan or happened to hear.
@@ToniBryanneTV. yeah her being biracial shocked me. i didn’t know until i watched the video 😂. but it’s so interesting to see people losing their minds over the old money aesthetic , which usually comes from the exploitation of black people especially in the US. i wonder if all these people saying she’s old money would change their minds if they found she was biracial. from the tiktoks i’ve seen they act like it’s so exclusive you can only be white and blonde everyone else is an after thought. it’s just so weird and borderline psychotic having people that will never have old money shaming people for not having it, and not having the so called “look”.
I'm pretty sure the Gen Z kids who are obsessed with the old money aesthetics have no idea who Lionel Richie is
independent of the amount of money the person has, most importantly, is the person a good ,classy person, she seems to be very classy, unlike the Kardashian/Jenners

Trends tend to die. Authenticity lives forever ♥️
I recently went down a rabbit hole and found actual old money girls on tiktok, like actual heiresses and rich girls and they dress NOTHING like how those aesthetic videos claim old money dresses, like those videos missed the mark so hard ,while they wear their buttondowns and Zara blazers and sweatshirts around the shoulders actual old money girls are on a whole other planet and there is no way to imitate them
I feel like the people in the “hood” date and have kids because of looks. Rich people tend to date and have kids with people who also have money regardless of looks. They just want to stay in the circle of money.
💯💯💯💯💯
THIS
The last point reminded me of the writers strike and how the CEOs are “it’s irrational what they are asking for” whilst making more money than that in a single day. Idolizing the ultra rich is like punching yourself in the face.
On the bright side , dressing classy and somewhat modest is coming back in style
THANK YOU FOR THIS. I hope you get more and more views. People need to realize that romanticizing a group of people that exploit others for extreme wealth, to the point where they are born into it and don't know or care about the reality most face, will be our downfall. The economic inequality is so insane right now between rich and poor and anyone hyping these people up is beyond me. Most people Sophia's age can't even afford a house working full time.
I want to highlight how common dissociation is among Gen-z, Daydreaming and depersonlization/derealization is just as common. Gen Z has already lived through several traumatic world events. We want to hold on to what we dont have, We want to escape from have we do.
People often see new money as lesser, less classy, less intelligent and I think this is also from the appropriatation of poc. The styles that are mimicked in the way they dress, in music, in the way people speak. These people are also benefiting from poc. Most people see this though and tend to dislike it, rather it be because of appropriation or racism.
People want to be respected, seen as respectable, seen as important, and most generations see the 'old money' style that way.
New money is also seen as easy to lose, Old money has 'lasted' generations so it must be realible, right?
Of course, in a generation that is reliant on money, we're going to want to pretend that we and people we love aren't struggling but we must also see how most aesthetics are rooted through racism. Old money, 1950s styles, and the dark/light academic styles especially
Literally every generation has lived through traumatic events lmao. Millennials faced the consequences of the housing crisis of 08, 9/11 & the war in Iraq, the dot-com bubble, etc. No generation has it sweet.. Unless you're born rich, life is nothing but hardship.
@thelonercoder5816 I'm not trying to belittle any other generation, I'm just trying to talk about how Gen z (as a group, I know not all gen z has these issues and other generations also experience this) has mental illness similar to american childern living through World War 1, no generation has it far. Gen Z happens to be one of our newest generation and, as a result, suffer the build-up and leftover trauma and economic effect of what was left over. Gen z was also a part of those people who experienced the things you mentioned firsthand (I watched live footage and oof), Gen Z, and millennials aren't enemies. Millennial and Gen Z suffer in similar ways, they just show it in different ways. Gen Z just happens to be the majority idealizing old money, hease why I mentioned Gen Z as we were the ones mentioned
mentioned in the video. I should have clarified ❤️
@@VultureRuins I'm apart of gen Z. I think the whole mental illness thing is overblown. I think the real prob is that we reached an existential crisis where we're bored and have nothing else to do with our lives lmao. So we rant and ramble about random feel good topics or engage in dopamine rushes to distract ourselves. There should be no reason why someone who has little to no financial obligations and very little responsibilities should be "mentally ill" from "hardships". If you want to see real hardship, go to a third world war stricken country where people are worried about where their next meal is coming from or if they'll see their family members tomorrow.
@thelonercoder5816 nah man, I grew up homeless for 2 years of my life and didn't know where my food would come from (my mother was disabled and out of the picture, my dad worked 2 jobs and serveral oddjobs, No one was an addict or had a gambling addiction etc). I don't think we have to go far to see we as a country aren't as great as we make it out to be. Not awful by all means but not the greatest. I can't expect everyone to have parents, guardians, family, friends, etc, to help if something goes south. We are all one wrong thing, one bad luck, one illness away from hardship. Yes, we're lucky to have things readily available to us, but just because it's available to me does not mean it's available to the person down the street. I'm blessed not to have hardships at the moment, but that does not mean I'm relieved of all hardships, anything was happen. One person's pain does not minimize another's. If someone's leg being cut off does not suddenly stop another person from having a broken leg 🙃
Also, most people experience mental illness. I'm sure you know, You're brain can get sick (maybe youre born with it, maybe you're chemicals are inblanced, maybe its a car accident, literally anything ), just like your respiratory system can get sick. It's normal, don't worry about it
Let’s not forget, this man has POWER. Well his father does. His dad pretty much runs the music industry. He’s over UMG, and Elliot is who signed ice spice. That’s why she’s being pushed down our throats 😂. But that’s a whole other video. But yeah, she’s connected to a man with huge power….get it sis. But be careful.

It’s so weird watching the GenZ go through the same thing millennials went through, but they act like it’s new, the past three generations went through exactly what you’re going through right now. Realizing we will never have those “adult” milestones like the older generations.
One, I definitely included millennials and two, no the older generations (that are still alive)are not going through the same economic turmoil we currently are. Every generation has their problems definitely, but it’s okay to highlight one generation as I just did.
@@ToniBryanneTV Gen X and Millennials literally been there done thaat. Gen Z is jst now bring it up amongst themselves, or they just now are entering the conversation that we’ve been having ( bC they came of age) . Yesss i was waiting for someone to make this video because while this aesthetic is nice and cool when romanticized, it's also problematic because generational wealth if you think about it, is lowkey slave owner wealth. I'm glad that people are seeing the good sides of old money and also the controversial sides.
This video reminds me of a quote this girl said one time on a show I watched as a teen. She said, “You can be poor but if you look nice people will think you’re rich.” That has always stuck with me because that is so true even down to the fact that people have all these materialistic things but they really are broke or are “poor” in other ways. No friends, no peace, looking nice on the outside but they’re still insecure and don’t love themselves, etc.
There’s old money African families..and I mean filthy rich.
Unfortunately not in America. I can’t wait to visit the motherland one day!

Old money seems really toxic and I would argue that it’s also rooted a little in misogyny, ie classy/modest = higher value. It also feels like they’re shaming women who want to flaunt their wealth or maybe dress flashier and show more skin, like dress however you want to dress.
Classy is better dressing nicely and respectfully to one's body isnt rooted in misogyny. So I'm guessing you want your children to look like the Kardashians, Cardi bs or Lizzo, better yet let's all walk around in the nude🙃
Sorry but when you dress like you’re desperate for male attention it is tacky and dressing like a street walker only works to get promiscuous nasty athletes and rock and hip hop stars.

I’ve been thinking about this phenomenon for some time now, so I was really excited when I saw that you made a video about it. Very well done! I love listening to your throughly researched videos. And thank you for sharing positivity and a bible verse with every video. I’ll always look forward to hear which verse it will be when I watch a new video of yours.
And about “dressing like old money”- I realised that the old money aesthetic is high-key 90s (and late 80s) adult business fashion inspired/ build upon. (Adult fashion in contrast to the YA/ teen’s fashion of the late 90s and early 00s.)
Blazers, turtle necks, high coverage tights, headbands, big blow-outs, dark-ish smoky/ neutral eyes and classy toned down dark red/ brown lips, dress pants or short-ish pencil skirts/ well fitting skirts…
So if you enjoy the aesthetic but don’t want to call it “old money” because of the very good reasons that Toni mentioned, look into 90s fashion for adults.

I admire old money and I admire the come up stories. Having old money is a real flex though. Why would you want your family generations to struggle and inherit poverty stricken mindsets. It’s about building and leaving a legacy behind for future generations. I rather get a head start on building wealth from a bloodline of financially literate, money making individuals. Having to work for what you have is a flex too but if I had to choose though, I would love to come from old money.

The issue I have with this “quiet luxury” trend is it seems like humble bragging. That whole “If y’know, y’know” feels almost like gatekeeping high society. Plus, despite the simple look they have the items are almost deceptively expensive. Yeah, it’s probably better than the rich and famous flexing logos in our faces, but at the same time, it gives off the vibe that there’s a “right way” to be rich, like a calculated performance. And because the whole mood given by the clothes is very vague, neutral, or ambiguous; it dissuades self expression
There should be gatekeeping and class divides because I don’t want to associate with everyone from every social strata. I don’t want to be down with people from the trailer park.
The pronunciation of Givenchy put me on the floor!!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣 Love the content tho.
Sophia’s husband is music royalty. His father runs a Music group. Their parents are Music friends
Great video as usual but just wanted to say White Americans and Europeans ≠ Caucasians/People from the Caucus region. Those would be Armenians, Georgians, Azerbaijanis etc. Europeans really co-opted an entire ethnic groups identity based on racist “science”.
Hoarding wealth is so crazy to me when you stop and think about it having more money than humanely possible to spend and still using immoral tactics to gain more to the point the only way you can figure out to spend it is by destroying the earth. But this over glorification explains the desensitization.
I think wanted to dress classy is great but when we label it as “old money” we’re sorta pushing this idea that money and family lineage is what makes someone classy when I can think of 100s of people who are classy and middle or lower class
I love your shirt 🥰
If people want to look classy, confident and expensive they should just look at toni’s outfits
@3:44 that’s EXACTLY what I think of when people say “old money”…. I’m like oh blood money from our ancestors okay 😬
"Cosplaying"🤣Perfectly described.
Love you girl, you are doing amazing 🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩
Old money was trending way before sophia Richie
She’s be, I was starting to miss you Toni
8:40 you said it the best old money we don’t see & new money we see all on our timeline
21:48 I agree with you all the way . Everything you said I agree with & love it ..
Girl I’ve never followed a channel so fast
Ahhh welcome!!
Almost all of the famous families of the gilded age that you mentioned were sorta thought of as new money during their time. They made their money through the exploitation of lower classes not through slavery (as the old money families of their time once did). All of the gilded age million and billionaires i guess we call them old money now.
As you mentioned, it is difficult to maintain generational wealth and those who did benefit from land ownership and slavery of the true old money way term as it originally referred to, some do still have land and wealth, but for most of those family's their wealth today is quite modest. Their generational wealth is that they pass down is usually just a house and land not really finances. Though it is still something and a start many Americans don't have. I enjoyed your video.
In no way the Clintons are old money. Upper middle class, perhaps but the Prez’s father was a traveling salesman, and his grandparents owned a small local grocery in Arkansas. Ole Bill moved up by becoming an attorney and marrying an upper class attorney.
Madam cj walker whom made it in the old world would have been old money had her daughter not blew what she left
I suggest using the term “classic” aesthetic instead.
It’s the fact that we associate class with money. The two aren’t synonymous. Wealth is not indicative of class.
❤love this comment 💯
SheraSeven The Wise has always said that she is a "financial advisor not a dating coach" Sprinkle Sprinkle ya'll
✨LOVE✨ your last point. ✨LOVE✨ that you respect your ancestors, & you won't worship people who got rich by exploiting them. You can't get mega-rich without exploiting somebody, & that's especially true of old money. Even if it wasn't as hideous as slavery, it was the nobility exploiting the peasants, or in Australia, the "squattocracy" getting rich from 1) the land they stole from Indigenous Australians & 2) the unpaid labour of convicts. I've got no time for the mega-rich; sorry not sorry.

Girl, millennials are too busy making ukulele “apologies”
i just did the trend because i needed some outfit ideas for work
I just pray that anyone who sees this video, does not become envious of these peoples. Because what these people do to get their money, is very Demonic, trust me😔✝️🙏
I love the shout out to the ancestors 🎉, how forget we have forgotten their tears and sweat 😢
I was just going to say that people forget who Sofia’s father is but then you mentioned it 😂
I like the old money aesthetic because IG fashion is tacky. Which I always thought it was prior until it became a trend. But the old money aesthetic is quite corny and classist for sure. These girls really in delulu land. They really just say classy, elegant, or any other term than “old money”
