    Hi,
    Question, currently have a new pool being built. They finished the shotcrete and noticed that one of the umbrella holes is a bit deep where it does not hold water that long, not lasting more than 5minutes telling me that its going beyond the concrete. Should I be concerned and if so whats the best way to fix that with concrete epoxy or just add some more concrete?

    If the pool is leaking so much that the level is below the skimmer and it continuous to lose below the skimmer...then the leak is not in the skimmer.. Unless you have a leak in the skimmer and some other place below..

    Hi Dan, I thought it was the pool liner itself. Now I am hopeful! We have trees on one side of the pool near the pool equipment and I am betting it is the supply and return lines cracked open by roots. Water level stops just below skimmer basket. Getting out my demo hammer now. Thanks enormously.

    We have drained our spa as we are going to re-pebbletec it when our new pool goes in. We have a sprinkler leak in the yard that we can fix. However, after draining our in ground pebbletec/plaster spa and turning off the yard sprinklers, we see a wet patch coming in through the pebbeltec? We are going to have to tell the pool installers but how hard is it to repair leaking through plaster and pebble tec?

    Thank you for this valuable information. I have a 20x40 vinyl lined inground pool with 1 skimmer. Suspect a leak. Will do the bucket test but I have 2 questions if you wound please address:
    1. If I allow the water level to drop below the skimmer and the water level stabilizes, would this be adequate evidence to diagnosis the skimmer as the leak source?
    2. Given the variables of temperature, wind, dew point etc. Is there a maximum level of water drop which would absolutely indicate leakage vs. evaporation? I live in the Pittsburgh Pa. area and lost 2 inches of water in about 2-3 weeks.

      Your question is a little old, today is Dec 9th. Normal evaporation is about a 1/4" a day I'm told. What was the result of your investigation? I'm looking for a leak in My inground. pool. An Inch a day...

    Silly question. I can see two small hairline cracks in the bottom of my skimmer. I have every thing plugged except the light and the drain.
    20 by 40 in ground pool, I lose water almost an inch or more in 24/48 hours in plugged state..
    I struggle to think those small crack could lose that much water, am I incorrect in my thinking?

    • @colson8327
      @colson8327 Před 2 lety

      I'm struggling with an inch water loss in 24 hours and then it stops just above the skimmer entry point. I have been using a+ B epoxy putty everywhere and it hasn't resolved the issue but the stuff sure works, so I would recommend buying some and sealing those hair cracks just for the hell of it. It won't hurt anything and it's super easy to do.

Noticed no bubbles in my returns or in the pumps basket unbelievable but how?

    when you put plugs in skimmer you you shut off pool pump while testing for leak

    I do this for a living and this guy's info is off..
    1. the bucket should be filled almost to the top.. if not then the amount of evaporation can be skewed... also the pump should run on its normal cycle and not be left off for 24 hours..
    also the skimmer line and return lines are not the most common leak areas.. they are prone to leaks but there are other more common leaks..

    • @empiremack
      @empiremack Před 7 lety +6

      That doesn't make sense, and you make a living doing this? Does the bucket or jar know it's almost full to the top or just half way? Quantity in bucket is immaterial it's the amount of latent evaporation in 24 hours!

    • @jimmymatthews1458
      @jimmymatthews1458 Před 7 lety +6

      Man Stuff Channel
      wind speed is why the bucket should be filled. A half full bucket us not getting the same evaporation rate as the pool.

    • @heidis8713
      @heidis8713 Před 6 lety +2

      1) His comment DOES make sense. What DOESN'T make sense is trying to determine the amount of something that doesn't even exist. There is no such thing as "Latent Evaporation"; but assuming you meant "Latent Heat of Vaporization" I still don't understand how that would apply.
      2) The bucket doesn't need to "know" Physics for the matter inside to adhere to the applicable theory / law. Must a tree know Newton's law of universal gravitation for it's apples to fall to the ground?
      3) The "quantity" (a.k.a. "volume") in a bucket IS MATERIAL. That is because the rate of evaporation increases when the surface area increases. It's all relative, so describing a surface area as large or small, is a comparison between the "exposed" water, and the "total" water.
      4) So...
      Quantity is Volume.
      Volume is material to Surface Area.
      Surface Area is material to Evaporation.
      Evaporation IS affected by Quantity.

      Yes I do leak detection in pool plumbing & structures. The bucket test that was explained to me yrs ago has worked without fail. I explain to use a 5gal bucket mark a line bout 2/3 & if you have steps sit it there I do this because water in the bucket becomes the same temperature as the pool’s; I have my reasons. For the pool water level it has simply been 1/2 way up the skimmer throat but if ya wanna use tape fine. Now you can start by running your system bout 12 hrs. After 12 compare. Now refill as before & don’t run the system; again after @ least 12 compare again. The rule of thumb is if it lost more on than off it points to the return side. Conversely more off than on the suction side & if the loss, again the rule of thumb, would indicate a structural flaw. The variables that exist re: these results are numerous, that’s where I tell my customers to start. FYI, Don’t think the hotter the weather the loss of water to evaporation is more; it ain’t. Go to pond or small lake after the sun has been on it all day during the fall or cooler weather & go back @ nite & watch the steam rise. Comprehend?
