Fun fact: ridiculously dark as the original comics were, they were aimed at adult readers.
Krang was made for the tv series wasnt in the cómics. I liked when they used Raphael think so in a Psd to aware kids to no consume drugs. Also in the original tv series there are a lot of clasic movies referencies like Baxter who is inspired by The Fly movie the 50s one and the episodes tittles too.
Yeah I agree with all of them except the whitewash April as that hairstyle was common during the time. They used as a reference and even the creator some selves said she was white but she was always in a shadowy location to give it the darker edge except for a couple issues in a parallel universe or just a random couple episodes issues that they had released with other artists has she ever been of any other nationality it is until rise of the mutant ninja turtles was she the consistent whole different nationality
This list, as many from WM seem to be any more, is pretty piss poor and just flat out based off a bad or misguided topic for the sake of making "content" just to make a buck. "Whitewashing April O'Neill" "Comics were much darker" so dumb ... it's quite obvious the producers of this video weren't even glimmers in daddy's eyes until the mid to late 90's at the earliest.
I didn't at the time, but I did started connecting the dots later as I got older.
Bonus fact: In the OG comic, the turtles all wear red bandanas and switch weapons as need be, in order to confuse enemies.
Ninja were actually likely to do stuff like that to avoid detection or confuse
tmnt darkest facts 💯
@@firepuppies4086 You're likely to already know of this technique thanks to shows such as Which Ninja, but it's called the Kage Bushin no Jutsu (影分身の術) where a ninja tricks the enemy into thinking they are in multiple places at once. This has been shown in shows like Dragon Ball, Naruto and even Pokémon.
That is true, and the all-red bandanas were adapted into the first issues of the IDW comics, as Leo, Mikey, and Don wore red to remember they were searching for Raph (who in this incarnation, was separated from the others by Old Hobbes before mutating) as red was Raph's favorite color (this is the same universe that explains the turtles and Splinter are actually reincarnations of Hamato Yoshi and his four sons).
Damn I didn't know that thanks for the info 👍🏿
Leo's PTSD came from the events of the Season 3 finale Exodus where he feels that he failed Splinter, Master Yoshi, the Utrom, and his brothers. So much that the Turtles were willing to sacrifice themselves to stop the Shredder from hurting billions of innocents
That was deep.
Luckily, the Ultrom saved them and imprisoned Ultrom Shredder on an ice asteroid. Until the Turtles Forever movie.
@@Yasuda9000Yeah the 80s Shredder foolishly released him
For me karai backstabbing him was the reason he's been acting like this in s4

“That will ruin your childhood” is the one of the glib overused terms in history. I bet a lot of adults are ruined because of what they endured as children.
True
Yup, my childhood is now officially ruined because I watched this WatchMojo video 🙄
To WatchMojo we're all damaged goods.
Yeah, "that will ruin...." is definitely overused!
I will say that the rock star moment of TMNT killed my interest for about a decade. The 2K3 reboot actually renewed my interest..... 2K12 and "Rise" were OK, but 2K3 had my favorite story arcs.
Michael Bay's movies are too much like Transformers! I really like the individually styled designs, but Shredder is a LETHAL ninja master... running his own clan.... so, unless he is an Utrom, he has no need for Megatron armor.
Anyway, Leo's PTSD was very relatable to my circumstances when I first watched these episodes [2006-2007].
I wonder what Seth Rogen will do with his movie next year.
Somewhat funny....the original term for PTSD back in WWII was 'shell shock'.
Fitting is a better description.
WW1 is where the term comes from I believe
So we're just not gonna acknowledge the fact that Rocksteady literally broke open Donnies shell with a sledgehammer and nearly killed him in the comics?
That's more of a childhood ruiner than the fact it started as a joke
@@eb0utique Agree!
The only downside to me about the Turtles is that you can't mention their namesakes without people immediately thinking you're talking about the Turtles
Pls explain..
@@malcolmadams2105 he means so many people automatically think of TMNT when someone is talking about the real historical figures of Michelangelo the Italian artist, Donatello the sculptor, Raphael the Italian artist and architect or Leonardo da Vinci. These are very impossible people but hearing their names reminds us of turtles. Lol
Well that's because all of those artist were named after the Ninja Turtles, not the other way around...

@@andjelamilosavljevic3366 Was just joking. People say I'm always like that, but it's not true. I'm only a sarcastic smart alec 17 hours out of the day...
I remember Leo's PTSD in the 2003 series all too well....
Same
As do I. 😌It was surprising, but heartbreaking.🥺Poor Leo.🥺🥺
Easily one of the best arcs from that series.
God that was such a dark time for Leo….
My favorite episode from TMNT 2003 is the Ancient One where Leonardo has PTSD. Leonardo having PTSD made sense when you think about his personality. He would always try to put pressure on himself to be the best considering he is the older brother of the turtles. I love TMNT no matter what saga they are in.
I already knew most of these facts, and none of those said facts ever really ruined my childhood. It made me love TMNT even harder.
I loved the Coming Out of their Shell Tour, but I was one of those that saw it live. I also had the tap casette of all those songs and wore it out playing that thing on repeat.
Had the VHS lolol
I had the cassette as well. Haha
"how DARE you participate in the Corporate Shilling of cheap plastic at the cost of your morals?!" - this video. Like, every kids series ever has the goal to make money. Your kids can participate in buying that merch or not depending on your inclinations as a parent. I say this now with toddlers of my own, and i would have LOVED to attend Coming Out of Their Shell as a 5 year old obsessed with Turtles in 1990. I wouldn't have cared if the lyrics were cringe. I think i would have been blown away by the whole thing, "omg I'm in the SAME ROOM AS THE TURTLES!"
I have to agree. It may not be perfect, but it was good to watch for how cheesy it was.
If you want a bad Turtles concert, the sequel, Getting Down in Your Town is that bad concert, as the video version was bogged down by many restrictions (Casey not being allowed to remove his mask due to being union, the removal of characters from the live version, etc).
The maturity of the 2003 cartoon is the reason I liked it so much growing up, and still watch it today.
Hold up pretty well. At least the first 5 seasons do
I wish their was an 8th season.
“Ruined” my childhood? That’s a weird way of saying “made my childhood”
Also no, Leo having PTSD is not inherently bad, people struggle through this and should not be gawked at simply because it’s “dark”. Take your mental health seriously kids
Yeah.
Especially when the 2012 series did a whole arc in season 3 about Leo suffering from Chronic pains and brushed it off as just being in his head.
Now, whilst many cases of chronic pain can be attributed to psychological damage, it’s also one of the things people automatically try and convince the afflicted they’re suffering from rather than actually looking into it.
@@christopherbennett5858 it’s easy to miss the mark sometimes but I’m still glad TMNT goes out of its way to tackle these topics
I wish serious topics were covered in cartoons, children go through things like this. They're gonna learn about it someday.
@@eb0utique As do I, but sadly, companies tend to cave into the demands of parents and censors who want to keep little Timmy from being exposed to the harsh reality of the world we live in.
@@jeremyriley1238 When Little Timmy grows up he will realise he could've used the lesson learned from serious situations in his favourite childhood shows.
I already knew the origin story of how Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird created the TMNT by a small joke has change their lives.
I would LOVED to see a crossover between "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" meet "He-Man and The Masters Of The Universe".
Or G.I. Joe
Or Transformers
There was going to be a TMNT / he-man crossover in the comics but sadly that got cancelled
I was wondering why they would do a TMNT/G.I. Joe/Transformers crossover since their comics were all owned by IDW.
That’d be cool.😎😌
Even as a kid, I always thought it was disturbing in the 1987 series how the turtles seemed perfectly fine leaving Baxter Stockman banished in a limbo dimension and even sent him there in one episode.
Nothing could ever ruin my childhood of TMNT
Agreed, I’ve noticed WatchMojo seems to make a habit out of these cringe or “I can ruin your childhood” videos. I think it’s ignorant as all hell.
@@ReazyRe and hell what's with people and say that the actors or something have ruined their childhood. Monica May who played a Power Ranger in SPD was in a skimpy outfit after the show ended and people outright tell her that she ruined their childhood, when the outfit has nothing to do with her role in the show.
Definitely.
Stockmanstain?
To be fair for #8, Leo's also had some PTSD in the previous Nick cartoon that was CGI. Hysterically #7 also was represented by the same series in season near the end where Raph basically was in a post apocalyptic future where Donnie was literally a robot he implanted his brain into.
The original TMNT comic book version was ridiculously grim and gritty.
I want to see an animated movie adaptation of the very first Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comic book. Specifically produced by Warner Bros.
@@victorhernandez8723 it what i want to see for long time but problem is nick own rights for tmnt
Hey I’ve just realised something with The TMNT and the four main robins from DC.
Nightwing: Leonardo
Red Hood: Raphael
Red Robin: Donatello
Robin: Michelangelo (if Mikey was an edgelord).
And they are both trained by rats (bat is a rat with wings)
And April is Batgirl, so who is Casey supposed to be?
@@estebangutierrez160 Alfred.
Well, Mikey actually ends up becoming the Ronin and he is also much more serious after Leo, Donnie and Raph died.
This reminds me of the animated movie Batman vs TMNT that came out in 2019. The crossover we didn't think we needed.
I like how the number 1 fact was referenced in the 2012 tmnt when they jumped universes to other turtle series, with the comics being essentially a silent horror
I actually knew all of these, and tho I was expecting some more, disturbing facts, it's still a good list.
The fates of Raphael becoming the shredder and Donatello becoming a machine were always 2 very interesting concepts that were never explored as deep as they potentially could have been. I would love to see the whole build up of those arcs without some major time skipping and seeing them going through those emotions and changes would really flesh their characters even more.
Leo's ptsd was a thing I actually really came to relate to in my mid teens when I was facing a lot of my inner demons from the past (hell, I still do) but just as Leo, I came to live with those demons. It's traumatizing, yes, but it shows how deeply Leo cares about his family and his role as a leader.
And well, A LOT of "children's media" contains small little dirty secrets of adults, so yeah it's a small nice easter egg for the fans.
And tho 1984's Mirage TMNT were very dark and FAR different from the turtles everyone knows nowadays, Kevin and Pete didn't knew that a joke would ever even become a reality. It was just a joke between the 2 best friends that, just over night, became one of the most popular franchises in the world. And tho the OG toitles ain't the light hearted guys but rather a trained family of teenage assassins, raised to revenge their father's master, they will always strike hard, and fade away, in to the night..
TMNT is such a great series. 🤩
One of the things I love about TMNT is how malleable the concept is. There are so many interpretations taking it in different directions. Even back in the late 80s/early 90s you had the comics, the TV show, the movies, and even the toys were often quite different from their comic or screen counterparts (Shredder! Put a shirt on!). Plus there were so many knock offs going around that it felt like a multiverse of anthropomorphic reptiles (I had a Turtle Commandos jumper as a kid. One of them had a bazooka!).
It's one of the reasons I don't get mad when a new version veers away from the source, I'm just interested to see what else a new interpretation can bring to the table. And also because I'm an adult and it's not worth getting angry over.
I think the best way to do TMNT is with a mix of wacky and darker moments. I think the 2003 and 2012 shows nailed this, but I'm also not averse to different iterations skewing more one way or the other.
I absolutely love how even the tmnt cartoons aimed at children touched on darker tones. the 2k3 and the 2k12 show most notably that had all kinda of messed up episodes. on screen death (multiple times), broken bones, attempted cannibalism, body horror, all around depressing moments, etc.
For me it was Raphel tale of a mutant apocalypse. For years I thought that this was the actual finally and the turtles were like weird. Raph was a big old man, donnie was a robot, mickey became an old man, and don't even get me started with leo. But recently I learned that it was alternate universe story
Thank goodness too. Every human was gone! Including April, Karai, Shinigami, Casey (his skull was used as a bomb)
Actually it is the canonical ending and the last episode that they made, they just showed it before other episodes to hide that. But the fandom always ignores that fact bc well, y'know
@@LittleCupcakeOfMemories it’s an alternate future but they made it seem like it’s not
@@hayleyyeager8008 actually, it's the other way around: it's the canon ending but they made it look like an alternative future
The Cyborg Donnie thing actually does make a reference in the 2012 Turtles show's final (and somewhat not possible) episodes, set in a Mad Max like future, where Raph has amnesia and Donnie is in a fully robotic body after a Mutagen Nuke pretty much wipes out the planet
Remember the cyborg roach episode?
And let’s not forget the source material was definitely NOT made for children - they only got darker over the years (if not read the comics, treat yourself!)
For real!
Indeed. The Mirage Comics were not for kids, and the IDW comics do get dark (with The Last Ronin being one of the darkest stories in the TMNT franchise).
Yeah I had the VHS tape of the turtles musical it was terrible even as a kid I thought it was terrible but I still watched it to get that turtle fix between episode airings
I just played the tmnt video game in a bowling alley arcade. I loved that game and I still do! It was so fun! I loved the cartoon. Not really the live action movies but the cartoon❤️
#7: Don't forget that Donnie became a full robot in the IDW run when his consciousness was downloaded into Metalhead.
my brother and I make it a goal to collect every vintage turtle toy we can over time. he holds it in South Korea and we just keep adding to it we call it the turtle shrine
I think April's cartoon appearance was based on her very first comic look, when she was Baxter's assistant. She had the jumpsuit, and a similar hairstyle and lighter hair. It was after that issue that she got a perm, so maybe Eastman was retroactively trying to make her look like his girlfriend?
Yup think that's it
Splinter's best origin is when HE is Hamato Yoshi. Makes for a much deeper story between him and shredder
And makes the fact that the turtles being trained by the rat more believable, because the rat IS a master of ninjitsu.
So no one is gonna talk about the unaired episode of the 2003 version? The one called “Insane in the Membrane.”
Mikey gave him a clever nickname and that’s Stockmanstain. The episode sure did give me the creeps when I watched it long ago.
This episode has Dr. Stockman getting his body back but the body is unstable and it gradually becomes more zombie like as he is losing his mind and keeps getting hallucinations of his mother.
Shredder isn't that threatening when you consider he is based on a Cheese Shredder.
I loved the PTSD story arc in 2003. It really helps to talk about it without making fun
TMNT was never intended for kids
I'm watching this because I love TMNT. My parents, high school, and humanity in general ruined my childhood. Great video. Thanks.
If these are your ideas of "ruining" a childhood, then you're a friggin' lightweight.
Leonardo isn’t the only character in blue to go through PTSD, Avatar Korra did as well
I had the VHS of Turtles Coming out of their Shells and I genuinely loved it
I love TMNT and I didn't knew any of these.
You mentioned the possible whitewashing of April O'Neil, but not the *definite* whitewashing of Baxter Stockman in the original cartoon.
Dang, and I was obsessed with TMNT when I was little, I had a ninja turtle back pack , I was Michealangelo for Halloween once and everything .
Even though I grew up with the 1987 cartoon I preferred the 2003 version of the TMNT and I still love watching it to this day it had a lot of great characters, a fantastic voice cast and some really deep and dark moments including my favorite Leo’s PTDS that led to him become angry with his friends and brothers even attacking his father Master Splinter which saw him having to leave on a journey to find a way to deal with his frustration 👍💚
I grew up with TMNT On Tour with the Out of their Shells two VHS feature with the actual concert and the "behind the scenes" tape. I enjoyed it as a kid, and as an adult i still can get some amusement out of it. Heck, even the songs aren't half bad especially if you just want to lighten up your routine.
I love how the video has a lot of footage of the 2003 show which though is for kids, it is extremely dark
Bonus Fact: The acid spill that created the TMNT is the same acid spill that made Matthew Murdock (Daredevil) blind. The video mentioned that Eastman and Laird started the series as a parody, but they literally parody Daredevil #1 in TMNT #1
I loved the TMNT concert! I watched it a bunch of times on VHS
Two things I try to forget exist: TMNT coming out of our shells concert in the Star Wars Christmas special
In one of the episodes of the 2003 series, Splinter straight up said he has waited a long time to avenge his master when he was about to confront the Shredder, so the motive of using the Turtles to kill him in the comics was slightly referenced.
The darkness of the comics is the thing that I love, that's why I love 2012 TMNT more than any other show
2003 was better.
2003 was closer to the comics
03 was good on that too. Take a look at Baxter Stockman at the start... then look him by season 3. Notice anything missing?
And then watch him in Season 4. (Shudders..)
@@firepuppies4086 Considering who the Shredder actually was in that series…
I grew up on the 90s live action films. Still love all 3 movies today. I will never watch the Michael bay one's because the 90s turtles are the only ones that matter.
I remember Leo being so angry in the 03 series that’s crazy.
I personally always found it awesome, matching and endearing that this awesome franchise started out as a joke.
It shows to me that sometimes the biggest changes and successes on the world are started with an accident, or just with a small, insignificant thing like a joke. It's a great example that anyone can come up with something great and lasting, that success often finds the people in the most unexpected forms and places.
It feels good to me, that this heartfelt and joke packed part of our childhood was in its originals... just a good little joke.
2003 Turtles will always be the best one in my opinion.
Turtles On Tour = That's way more than ruining our childhood
I grew up with the 2012 series, and when I started to read some of the comics, it made my childhood BETTER.
In the 2012 Ninja Turtles series there’s actually an arc that’s very Mad Max and Donnie is a Robot, Leo is the Villain, Michelangelo is out of his mind and calling himself “The Great Chalupa” and Raphael is even more edgy.
So nobody’s gonna talk about how 2012 shredder was beheaded or the Last Ronin storyline?
Yoo bro I love my childhood but never thought of this things 🤣😂😂
They need to bring it back so far there’s no new tmnt shows or movies out
The darkest aspect of the TMNT is that there is no place for them because they are mutants. The revenge against Shredder was only one reason they were taught ninjitsu. If they were to ever stray from the shadows and make themselves known, they would likely become experiments for the government and die horrific deaths.
So imagine being forced to train heavily for your entire life out of fear that if you ever slacked off, you'd be unable to defend yourself and you and your family would be separated and tortured. Likewise, you'd have to live in the sewers, rarely ever eating fresh food (unless you grew it yourself).
HAHA! No childhood to ruin because I only got into the turtles last month as a full adult! Checkmate! lol
4KIDS actually had the most detail interation of TMNT, which given their Track record with Dubbing Anime is surprising.
I grew up with 80s cartoon version and 90s live movies. Always been a huge fan of TMNT.
Can you do top 10 TMNT movies and TV shows?
cawabanga!🤬maza Fff!!(just kidding☺️)
I have that turtle van shown in the commercial clip, along with a lot of the toys!
Used to have the VHS of the tour performance. But if it had come anywhere near me when I was a kid, I very likely would have gone to see it live. Despite how cheesy it is, Pizza Power is still a pretty fun song
For fact number 1 you forgot to mention how they would drink alcohol and swear
Shredder's Robot voice
"How bout the TMNT top 10 ridiculous episodes?"
Coming Out of their Shells aged badly while it was still touring! I adored it when I was 10, but I kept that well hidden from my friends even then.
I love how random these lists are
I may not have completely attributed it to PTSD, but I definitely noticed as a kid what was going on with Leo and why.
I Prefer Power Rangers But TMNT 2003 Was My favorite 4kids show If only they hadn't dubbed One Piece in 2004 they'd be better off
This guy hits "t" way too hard. Idk why but I couldn't get passed that
Ruin my childhood? Tmnt facts wont ruin anything, but videos like this might ruin a mood or make it that much better with a laugh
I knew quite a few of these. Yet my childhood remains unruined.
Coming out of our Shells was weird, but had some good songs. Leo as having PTSD was well written.
I much prefer the original TMNT cartoon of the 1980s over the updated versions. I only knew of the satire of Daredevil (the Foot Clan mirroring DD’s ninja nemesis, the Hand) later.
Hope you can do similar videos that center on G. I. Joe, the Transformers & James Bond 007.
I love the 80s show
Bruh I had the Coming Out Of Our Shell cassette tape… I feel AF!!! Donnie is my favorite Turtle though!

I was in my 30s the first time I saw the name of the show in TV listings, in the 1990s. "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles? That's gotta be a joke," I thought. Well what do you know -- my suspicions were right!
TMNT live on tour litterly made MMPR (the season 3 version) live on stage look WAY better then whatever THAT was
#2 got me thinking, are you saying that ROTTMNT's April O'Niel was the very first and only reitteration that actuaully done her JUSTICE and done her RIGHT?!
I had the turtles tour on cassette tape as a kid lol
Thank you for showing us the facts about the TMNT, WatchMojo.
I grew up watching the original animated series but I fell in love with the tmnt lore when I read the original mirage comics. They were dark compared to the animated series sure but it made sense they are ninjas…ninjas are assassins.
Usually these "10 xyz things will ruin your childhood" often don't do what they do. But with point number 2, you actually got me. That April O'Neill fact now kinda ruin my childhood.
It’s incorrect tho
She wasn’t biracial and subsequent coloured reissues that came from Mirage Comics have her white
@@andrewquick4176 I've read a bit more about it and one of the creators once said that in the notes she was "written Asian American" but for him she was always White, while also confirming that his partner and co-creator drew her based on his then girlfriend April who was biracial. And on the cover of #11, she was seen the first time in color and was not White (iirc).
Wow DOnnatello sounds like Fry from Futurama. Probably was the same voice actor. It just threw me lol
10:21 it literally says in the comic that it's a new haircut. She was white with straight hair in the previous episode... How is it hard to tell?
I knew the most of these because I’m a huge TMNT fan. But I didn’t know about Eastman’s Wife and Shredder Raph.
Love the teenage mutant ninja turtles
That thumbnail crazy though
While April O’Neil MAY have been white washed, Baxter Stockman DEFINITELY was.
A wrong that the IDW series rectified, and I highly recommend checking out for anyone who loves all iterations of the TMNT!
11:13 Ridiculously dark?...Hello! They're ninja. A ninja's life is always dark!
There will never be a TMNT as good as the original.
2012 had very good writing. Shame there were only 4 real seasons. The 5th season was more "monster of the week" and what if type stuff then the more story centered first 4.
@@danielthomas7193 my bad, I meant the original film, lol.
@@xplosiv211 I'll half agree. 3 and the two Michael Bay ones were horseshit. But Secret Of The Ooze was good and forever gave us Super Shredder. Despite losing some of the seriousness of the first movie. And the animated one just named TMNT was actually good despite a lack of Shredder. At least we had Karai and a Leo vs. Raph scene.
No mention of the infamous German pickle commercial? Now, THAT will ruin your childhood. 😅
First u thought it was all in comics so it doesn't matter for me then I saw it was made from a joke. My heart.
