I was expecting to hear some facts about the 2003 and 2012 TV shows (especially after the thumbnail featured the 2012 Mikey), but no. There were facts mainly on the 80s show. I still wonder why it is considered "the best" of the three shows. Personally, I find the 2012 and especially the 2003 one way more interesting.

Because the 80s show created a lot of the tropes present in current TMNT. Things like turtles loving pizza, April being a redhead, Shredder’s popularity, Bebop and Rocksteady, and Krang all became popular because of the 1980s tv show. Without it you wouldn’t even know TMNT. It would have been just another 1 and done comic series.

  • @Graywing

Another fact, April was based off of Eastman's girlfriend at the time who was Afro Latina so that's why she is black in the early mirage comics. Unfortunately the cartoon changed her and Baxter Stockman's ethnicity and April was a programming assistant under Stockman. Also met Peter Laird at 2008 NYCC who was was pretty awesome.

One Marvel - Turtles connection you missed. The origin story in where the truck gets into the accident and the container of "ooze" flies off and smashes into the fish bowl containing the baby turtles (before knocking them into the sewer grate) was the same accident in where Daredevil lost his eyesight. Eastman and Laird (being the huge Marvel fans the were) stated that after striking Daredevil, the container then bounced off him, and then into the fishbowl containing the Turtles.

The episode "insane in the membrane" was not centered around shredders torture of Stockman. This had been happening throughout the entire series, until at that point in season four, Stockman was nothing but a brain in a jar. The episode focuses on Stockman attempting to transfer his mind into a clone body, which then begins to deteriorate into a hideous zombie, and drives Stockman mad. That is why the episode was deemed too grim for young audiences, and thus never aired.

that's not the actual plot of "Insane in the Membrane", Shredder slowly dismembering Baxter Stockman is actually something that happens through out the first 2 seasons; first an eye, then his arms and oer time nothing but his head is left; but this is a slow process that lasts a long time
"Insane in the Membrane" is actually Baxter's backstory episode in Season 4, and the thing that makes it so dark is Baxter wishing to die during most of it since his body was just too damaged and was more machine than human. It is an amazing episode but I do recomend watching that show in order.

Regarding fact 26, you're sort of right. Up till that point, every time Stockman failed Shredder, he'd suffer at his hand and every following appearance reflected this until there was almost nothing remaining of Stockman's original body. The episode is centered around him placing his mind in a duplicate of his former body he creates, only to have it slowly decay in disturbing detail. He tries putting himself back together (again, in disturbing detail), but the results are... Well, this episode was pulled for a good reason.

The episode of 2003 cartoon "Insane" in the membrane wasn't about baxter stockman getting mutitlated by shredder. It focused on him sucesffully cloning a new body for himself only to find out that his new body and both his mind were slowly but surely being degenerated and falling apart. It was riddled with flashbacks about Baxter's childhood and reasoning behind his interest with science. It eventually did air on Nicktoons. Also another banned/shelved episode was about it being revealed that Hun and Garbageman were conjoined twin brothers. they were separated in a backalley with hun being taken in and Garbageman being the deformed twin was thrown away. the episode would have featured the turtles and hun being kidnapped by Garbageman as apart of elaborate scheme to destroy them both.

It was Playmates Toys that decided on the multicolor masks to make it easier to sell the toys and differentiate the turtles for kids. Peter or Playmates or both just assigned the colors. At one time Michelangelo and Donatello had their colors reversed some trade articles and toy ads at the time actually do show this as an initial choice, which thankfully got switched not too far into production. Another thing they did was assign the personalized belt buckles to make it easier on the animators to color and to identify the characters for kids.
Eastman and Laird agreed to the designs of the action figures before there was a cartoon series. The prototypes were shown to them in January of 1987 and the more comic looking ones were chosen because they looked most familiar to Eastman and Liard. The toys were being made without the knowledge of what the cartoon series would look like. As such one could make the argument that the toys came first and the series while airing first didn't look at all like the toys.
April O' Neil was never intended to be African American. She was always considered Caucasian. The black reference comes from an ex of Laird who was black and named April. Originally Laird wanted her to be Asian, but was talked out of it. Color printings of this book including the one with her on the cover boobs hanging out and all have her as a redhead Caucasian. Her name is of Irish decent and her hair is curly because perms were popular in that decade.
Because of the violence and dark tone of the first movie Playmates refused to market any toys for them. Being that the toys were what made the most money, the producers explicitly toned down the next film even going so far as to introduce new characters to sell more toys. Super Shredder, Tokka and Rahzar were are introduced to sell new toys. Playmates would introduce their Movie Star line the very next year in 1992.
Something you could have said or mentioned were the creations of Tokka and Rahzar. TMNT II producers really wanted to use Bebop and Rocksteady but the creators refused this option. They hated the dimwitted duo and so decided to create two more mutants for them to use instead. It's tragic irony that these two also became dimwitted.

+RealCoolGuy One really cool fact I love whigging people out over is her heritage. How April could be nothing more than a pencil and ink drawing brought to life by her "father" because of a magical crystal he possessed. The same crystal that empowered Kirby to bring his work to life in the Donatello one shot. Some of the best writing this series ever had was when April comes to this realization and goes through a self exhile of sorts, to figure things out. Is she real???
