Singapore's MOST POPULAR Laksa, 328 Katong Laksa! Is it Really the Best?

  • Today I visited Singapore's most famous laksa place, 328 Katong Laksa. It is featured on many media as the number one traditional place to eat laksa. But is it really good? Let's find out!

🎥Food Review of 928 Yishun Laksa and Tour of Yishun: • 🇸🇬シンガポールの最も危険なエリア『Yish...
    Here are what I ordered:
    2:03~ Katong Laksa (small)
Signature Katong laksa full with spices and rich coconut milk. Also comes with many small ingredients like prawns, clams and thinly sliced fishcakes. To be honest, it was a tad bit salty for me and lacked umami. However, if this is your first time trying laksa, you will probably not be disappointed. Too bad I already tried 928 Yishun Laksa, probably the best laksa I had.
    Price: 5.50SGD
    6:03~ Otah
Otah is also a Peranakan delicacy. It's basically fish paste wrapped with banana leaf but you will be surprised of the strong taste and fragrance. It was a pity they don't even ask if you want it warm because the otah stalls I know will heat it up for you before serving. You can give it a try if you never tried otah before.
    Price: 1.40SGD
    6:57~ Dim Sum
I got the shiew mai and glutinous rice. Both are traditional dim sums. The shiew mai had a nice taste but the texture not bouncy enough. However glutinous rice was pretty good. I liked the chewy rice and tender chicken.
    8:38~ Kim Choo Kueh Chang
Stall selling souvenirs and traditional Peranakan snacks. I got the banana leaf dumpling and thought it was quite good. I love the chewiness of the fragrant rice and the crunchiness from the pork. James thought it was too sweet, but I would give it a try if you are down for trying new things.

@@TheLostOjisan Locals actually more or less agree that Sungei Road Laksa is better, 328 is more famous because it won the Gordan Ramsay challenge. 328 was really good like 20 years ago, they didn't cut on the ingredients. After the challenge they kinda reduced the ingredients but increased the price. The soup is also not as flavorful as it used to be.

bak chang (rice dumplings) have different types the one you had that is sweet is the nyonya type. there is the original one which is a little salty . then there is bean filled and a empty (no fillings) which mostly pple like to dip it in sugar. the stall you went to is a famous stall. a little pricey thgh.

You can tell it's a good laksa when the diner almost finish the soup before the noodles, it's all about the soup.
Btw i saw your pasir ris vlog in your main channel. I will like to recommend 2 food dishes (Chicken rice and handmade noodles) located in a small coffee shop around the HDB area. They close by 3pm to 4pm so you have to get there earlier if you want to try it. When you order chicken rice, remember to self-serve your soup and for handmade noodles, order U-main. The noodle is famous for its soup and ingredients.

I believe the reason why the laksa thick beehoon are cut into shorter pieces, this is so that eaters will use spoon to scope and eat. When you scope, you will get the gravy soup too, and thats where you get the complete taste of it. By the way, that shellfish inside laksa is cockles. It has a bloody taste, which really isn't something everyone may like.
Kim Choo. They are one of the oldest and popular brand selling nonya bak chang and kueh. Peranakan is the ethnic group which the early Chinese from China traveled and settled down in areas like Melaka, Penang, Singapore, and marrying the natives. Nonya means the Peranakan women, Baba is the Peranakan men. Bak chang can be explained as rice dumpling, which is link to the Duanwu Festival (some called it Dragonboat Festival). That is history related to it, but long story.... 😛

    • @alexsolosm
      @alexsolosm Před 4 lety

@@sdqsdq6274 That is true. But the main reason is, these street hawkers dont bring tables around with them, and some of them don't even use carts, but carry their limited stuff using sticks on shoulder. So the customers have to carry the bowl in one hand to eat, and they can't use both chopsticks and spoon. Spoon is better since they can use it both to eat the noodles and drink soup. That's why the vendors cut up the noodles for them. My father used to sell noodles on the street when he was young, and he explained it to me in the past :)

You should try Janggut Laksa. It is run by the daughter of the original owner who set up shop in the 1950s along East Coast Road. Junggut means beard in malay and this guy had hair that grew out of a mole on his chin. He was the one who popularize katong laksa. Currently their main outlet is at Queensway Shopping Centre where his daughter is overseeing but they have an outlet at Roxy Square which is opposite that 328 Laksa where you went. 328 Laksa opened much later probably around 1970s as a competitor to Janggut Laksa and went on to open branches very near them.

Nice bro. peranakan food is one of the best spicy dishes around. Recommend you to try out peranakan food dishes as their food taste best with white rice. You can google the blue ginger restaurant near tanjong pagar mrt if you want to find quality peranakan food. In the menu you have to try out buah keluak, something you will never try before in japan.. contact the restaurant to ask if buah keluak (black nut) is avaliable because it is under limit quantity. Better bring a friend along to taste more dishes
Hope to see you blog it .
