Owning an Alienware M18r1, the screen is not that bad. Sure, it's not going to work well outside in daylight, but playing BG3 at the moment, I have no issues seeing things when I'm indoors. The performance is great, and I'm only running the RTX4080 variant. There's a TON about this laptop that make it great! Price wise, it's much less than most of the others mentioned here, has more ports, is more upgradeable with 4 NVME slots (on the 4080 and 4090 variants), and the build quality is great! Everyone picks on Alienware (Dell), but I am extremely happy with my machine.

The best reviewer out there. You spoke the truth, you found whats good and what not about these machines. Then you compared them with each other. And I can confirm your analysis. I have a Razer 17 and just bought the predator 18 4090. It's a mounstrocity but its all worth. It is bigger than the Blade 17 but its not huge to the point of being uncomfortable. The form factor is the same of the older 17 inch models, so it fits on an existing 17 inch sleeve. It aint that heavy an its a monster in performance - this is worth if you are an enthusiast / work-play VR games, Video editing, AI video, 3D rendering. I dont even play flat games on this, but VR, you will always need more and more
The fans of the predator have a low pitch sound which does not disturb, in turbo mode its madness, but its worth it when you gonna play that unoptimized vr game or create a baking in Unity. I did had a scar 17 some years ago, and it is true it has a very annoying high pitch, so much that I returned it. The Razers have that issue as well.
Could you weight the powerbricks? No video compared all of them. The Razer is so sexy and the Predator is the chunkiest.
Having an 18 inch screen does feel enormous. This is especially relevant when working with video, 3d and unity. You will see tons more menus an feel more comfortable overall. With the 17 inch Razer blade you felt you needed a bit more space when the project is getting heavy.

Hi Josh, I bought a Legion 7i Gen 9 last month, after 20 days of use, it started to give me black screen every time I booted up any game, whether on steam, battlenet, unreal, it black screened when the laptop was on charge but it didn't when it was off charge, this happened before and after I updated EVERYTHING, deleted and redownloaded EVERYTHING. Now that you mentioned you have issues with yours, I am glad I'm not the only one, I ended up returning the Legion and now I am in a void of not knowing what to do, that was a top choice of mine but if its faulty like this when I buy it again it will be super frustrating, what would you recommend?

I am a proud owner of a ALIENWARE M18 R1 (all AMD). I got it for a very discounted price so not going to complain much about it...
The screen indeed is not the brightness, but feels very responsive. Has amazing colors, depth and "HDR like" image which I am not even sure how they achieved. Probably has high native contrast. I have had many gaming laptops and this screen feels the best to use. (this includes 16 inch Macbook Pro M1) I have had a Legion 7 with much brighter display, but that wasn't as pleasant as the Alienware. Colors also felt too blue. Also with the 18 inch size I don't really feel a need for an external monitor any more. It also runs pretty quiet on balanced/performance mode and just runs every game smooth and beautiful. For me, the only downside is that the Alienware is very heavy and probably the biggest M18 laptop on the market today, although mine has a small 330W charger. But I am happy for the winner. I originally wanted to buy the Helios too anyways... :)

We did not choose the 2023 model over the 2024. It was simply not released when we made the video. I believe it came out the week we launched it. Thoroughly using and testing 5 laptops takes a very long time.
When we did find out about it though, In the edit we made sure to call out the main differences to the 2024 model like the Thunderbolt 5 port and screen options. But after speaking with Jarrod's Tech who had the 2024 model, we decided to proceed to launch the video. The reason being... nothing about our conclusions would have changed. If they would have, we would have of course pulled the video.

Josh, I love your videos, but I didn't like the loud, harsh intro sequence. Yes, these laptops are targeted at a certain segment of the market. It shouldn't matter. Please keep your reviews honest, genuine, and graceful, which has always been what you're about.

It’s no way to please everyone. Razer laptops are known for thin and portable, while still getting the full TDP. Does that means there isn’t sacrifices to be made? Absolutely, even at that price. Is it the best laptop at cooling or do you get the best Keyboard ? No, this is why you make your selections depending on your preference. Asus, Acer, MSI & Dell have other options, but again, there is no perfect laptop that checks all the boxes.

Just an FYI, I have a Scar 18 with a 4080 and running it with a good Coolermaster laptop cooler. GPU temp maxes out at 80 degrees C and fan noise is 45dB. GPU is overlocked by 200Mhz on Core 1000Mhz on memory. Runs like a dream and quite silent. I personally think the slightly lower spec laptop 4080 cards run very well in an 18 inch configuration. My TimeSpy GPU score is 19899 with these settings.

About the heat issue. The 4090 is more power sufficient and runs cooler than the 4080, so in this particular case you are a bit off the mark. Cool and battery life is actually a selling pint for the 4090.

Too bad Acer offers the miniLED option only on select markets. Others can only get a regular IPS screen on those units. It also tops at RTX4080 in most markets. And going with anything below means a downgraded cooling (only RTX4080, with miniLED option, and higher get the better cooling solution), going lower in the stack it's offered with simpler heatpipe arrangements, previous gen fan design, and a weaker 165Hz 1200p screen. Sure, even on the lowest SKU it seems, you still get the RGB on the keys, palmrest logo, and rear/back side for those that care about light effects more than performance or functionality of the device...
Same for ROG, where in most markets only the top tier RTX4090 models get adorned with miniLED back-light screen technology. Most in the stack use the tried and tested IPS units.
Still, most of those laptops lack a proper premium tier webcam experience. Each manufacturer has the ultrabook line-ups sporting multi-MP webcam with IR/Windows Hello, often with fingerprint scanner even on the very cramped designs. And these top of the line biggest models? Only maybe good enough with FHD resolution. Why? Why is there no proper/bigger sensor? It's not like they lack the space on the models body.
In the same vain, why not have multiple security options? Lidar, IR for face unlock, proper fingerprint sensor, maybe NFC reader and a companion app for the smartphone, or a security card/id card reader... there's enough space in the volume to accommodate all of these.
The speakers in those big chassis should also have sounded better. Even if you target headphones using clientèle. Cause if so, then maybe they should've put a proper/better DAC with an AMP inside the chassis to drive better sound over headphones. Otherwise, they should have used the volume to actually boost the overall audio experience.
As mentioned in the video, these really should've come with a full-size card reader. You can use adapters to put a microSD inside such a reader, but not vice versa...
Also having just 2 As and 2 Cs, RJ45 and HDMI on a chassis this big should be considered a drawback. Lenovo's 16-inch Legions manage to cramp more connectivity, so Asus is almost too lazy/limited given the hardware and chassis constraints on the top of the line Scar 18 and G18.
Speaking of which, since in many regions G18 gets exactly the same cooling options as the lower tier Scars, you should've taken them into account in this comparison as well. Heck, Acer's Helios line-ups were typically targeting the same clients as Asus G line-ups. Where Asus deployed Scars, Acer had Tritons... We still haven't seen an 18-inch Triton, so I guess taking those Acer 18-inch models is good, provided we match them with their natural competitors as well.
Along the same lines, MSI has the Raider 18 as the slightly cheaper variation on the Titan chassis and components... You missed it in this comparison.
Both of those MSI lines share the RAM capacities, which is double that of the rest of this stack. That might be important for some. But it also means/meant RAM limited frequency, even with the same capacity/modules as on the rest of the pack...
You know how any manufacturer could've used the palmrest and keyboard deck space if they wanted to improve it all a bit? Asus once, quite recently, did the S17 with a raised/angled keyboard part. That would've opened areas for cooling, separate keyboard keys from the boiling heat underneath, and prep the deck for usage. Maybe this needs to come back?
Furthermore, if Titan's touchpad is such a gimmick while similar approach in XPS 13 is deemed good, why not add a touchpad across the whole deck, akin to Asus dual screen designs, only with a touchpad instead of a screen and moved down below the keyboard... want extra functionality? Add a row of simple LEDs below and above such full-width touchpad, allow users to decide the location and size/actual width of active touch input registering area and mark it using 4 corners limits with those LEDs. Want an alternative? Use an E-ink screen and draw which area is unblocked. It could still be back-lit, and it could allow a pretty big surface for touch interaction and still allow one to limit/disable most problematic areas when needed.
Alternatively, maybe they need to experiment a bit more with the colour tablet sized touchpad to the side of the keyboard... the space could certainly help with such an arrangement, with a touchpad/tablet or a secondary screen to the side.
Finally, maybe some manufacturers could spare a few cubic centimetres for an SFP/SFP+/SFP28 cage inside for up to 10GbE-25GbE of cabled network. Or just plain old BaseT 10GbE port to differentiate itself and potentially better integrate with the higher speed networks potential customers may have.
Heck, maybe one or two companies could even integrate the almost forgotten nowadays optical disc readers/writers.
Or use the volume to accommodate enterprise formats such as E1.S or U.2 for storage purposes.
Maybe we'll even get a 19- or 20-inch successor for those 18-inch desktop replacement laptops, successors to the big ones from "yesteryear" that sported 20+-inch curved designs that costed a fortune compared to regular top gaming/workstation laptops of their time.
