Big thanks to everyone who lent a boat load of footage to this project!!

I was both pleasantly surprised by Pokemon Legends Arceus, and then subsequently disappointed, all despite me having set very low expectations after Sword and Shield's story campaign. One could argue it's my fault for expecting so much out of a Pokemon game (when they haven't exactly made anything revolutionary before) but at that point it just seems like a waste of the fun formula they've coined. I know they can do better, so I tried to prove it in this video.
This video was written before the release of Pokemon Scarlet and Violet--they allegedly have pretty decent stories...which I somehow doubt...but they still seem to struggle with the balancing act between the story part of a game, and the game part of a game.

I think the big issue is that a lot of what makes the story so great for Japanese players and those who study the history is that most of this is environmental.
PLA is basically of fictional retelling of the Meiji restoration, where Japan colonized Enzo and turned it into Hokkaido (as Hisui became Sinnoh).
Volo is a descendant of the celestica people which are the Ainu stand-ins and were vanquished by the Japanese or just flat-out forced to integrate into Japanese Society thereafter.
Even the Old Verses confirm that the DP Clans are not originally from Hisui and are instead to send it from culture vultures who immigrated to the land decades prior and just took on the traditions of the Celestals which initially drove them out.
That's why none of the Clans know about Arceus because they're not actually indigenous while Volo does.
Volo is basically an indigenous person who saw their culture not only get stolen but flat-out destroyed before their very eyes and was forced to assimilate himself into this new society that was once his.
His anger was pretty justifiable when you read it from that perspective based on the history, and does make the Galaxy team and what the region eventually becomes a lot more sad when you look at modern-day Sinnoh.
I guess the story is actually there it's just that most western fans wouldn't actually know unless they dug deeper into Japanese history.

I had no idea that was an element! That's really interesting. It contextualizes a lot of things. Although, I would say it's still important to communicate that history/context within the bounds of the story, even if a part of the audience can recognize it's an allegory of some sort--for both world building purposes and narrative ones. Even if a player can recognize this is mirroring something from the real world, it could still hurt the narrative if it isn't given a proper foundation as it applies to the fictional story's rules. Also just because it would be cool to hear more about!

@@CamelinCD I agree, the subject is pretty taboo in Japan ( it's the equivalent of bringing up slavery and Colonial genocide for the US) so I can see why they left it as something you have to seek out.
IMO, this reconceptualizing a lot of the game as well as how DPP is presented.
Most of Hisui's culture is gone outside of look you can reading the library and that very small cave in celestica town.
Even though this is a Japanese think there is no fury similarities to the United States its treatment of colonial history

I'm glad I'm not the only one to see this. While my background on the history of the Ainu is limited, the whole theming of the game is the assimilation of culture and it seems like the historical background connects with the theming of the game. The fact the game had the balls to propose the question of proper cultural assimilation is great, and I understand why it wasn't brought to the forefront of the story as it's being covered up and is a pretty serious topic.

@@charnalk5572 A lot of this is found throughout ancient murals you can dig up since the DP clans wouldn't know since as far as they're concerned, they were always there ( Even though they're outsiders). It also makes sense that Nintendo would be vague about the Ainu colonization since that in itself is a very sensitive subject and Japanese people aren't direct in their take-downs. Still, Volo is one of the few left of his people, being forcible turned into a stranger in his own land is a feeling many indigenous people feel in places like the US alone. Also, it's not too farfetched that cultures outside of Hisui have a different relationship with their Pokemon because not every culture has the same values. That goes for the Galaxy Team too, not everyone would want to venture into the wilderness and be exposed to animals that they know nothing about. It's like growing up on a barn in Nashville and then being expected to deal with Aussie Animals.

    • @desdar100
      @desdar100 Před 11 měsíci +6

@@charnalk5572 I sort of answered a lot of your responses in my previous comment.
There are talented members in the Galaxy crew, but that's not all of them since many them are the equivalent of early settlers who know next to nothing about the new type of Pokemon that dwell in this area.
The analogy that I use previously was a guy living on a barn in Nashville, because even if that guy is familiar with many North American animals that doesn't mean that he's going to be able to deal with a dingo or other Australian animals if he decides to go there aboard.
Arceus requesting the player to seek out all Pokemon is more or less insinuating that it's thanks to them why Sinnoh became what it is retroactively.
The player Bridges the gap between the tribes and jubilife Village and make the settlers a lot more comfortable not only with one another but Pokemon.
If we want to get meta, then the reason for this is the same for basically why none of the adult characters in any other Pokemon game do anything to assist with the big bad or legendary.
It puts the player (especially younger ones) at the Forefront of all of the changes and as this contextual message about how the young will bring about change even if the old guard protests.
I've already covered Volo and why they're not exactly explicit about a topic that would probably get them in hot water in Japan, but it's heavily implied that he's already far gone.
I get wanting more than just implications but considering what this entire game is about, what is based on, and the socio-political nature of Japan and Nintendo being a considers family-friendly over there, this was the only way they could approach such a topic.

One of the things that always stuck out to me about a message of Platinum and PLA is how -to me- it implicitly portrays how people deal with grief, and why we can’t do it all alone (in a very broad sense, at least).
Cyrus, a nihilist, tries to REMOVE emotion by creating a new universe. He does this because it literally pains him how he cannot understand or communicate emotions effectively. He does not seek help either in loved ones or through therapy, he immaturely tries to bury the real problem and hurts others in his failing attempts to fix what he cannot see is a problem within himself.
Volo, alone and suffering as one of the last of his people is angry at his situation. He is blinded by hate and cannot understand that though life is unfair, we cannot take that back out on the world. We need to seek support and fully feel our internalized pain to heal from it.
And where these two fail to look within, Giratina succeeds.
Giratina, who too is alone and building up it’s anger towards Arceus for casting it aside teams up with Volo to tear it apart. After falling at your hands and traveling with you it becomes more docile. During its travels with you, it helps you complete the Pokedex and integrate Pokemon and Humanity into a collaborative, loving society we see in later games.
Chronologically we next see Giratina in Platinum, where it literally stops the exact plan it once helped Volo achieve. It saves Palkia and Dialga and removes Cyrus from anywhere he can do harm. And after his defeat quietly awaits your challenge, staring you down. You, the trainer who once travelled with it, introduced it to new friends on your team, and spent quality time with it without having ulterior motives. It gets to show you how it’s grown after meeting again for the first time.
We give Giratina someone to depend on, someone to grow with. This is something Cyrus and Volo never had, unconditional love and support through their grief. And by the time we see it again Giratina saves us this time, echoing how we saved it from itself.

I think the best detail of the Giratina fight is the seamlessness. It probably would've been easier for GF to pull a GF moment and just program it as two separate fights, but it's so much better and more challenging this way. Having the turn simply resume means there's not even an opportunity to outspeed again or sack and use a revive, you just immediately get smashed by a shadow force. I imagine this finished more than a few people off and made them strategize even harder.

I remember it always bothered me what happened when you lost to Volo, something the devs _clearly expected to happen_ given how hard they made the fight. He says that after he beats you he'll steal the plates you've gathered and summon arceus, but like... you lose and he doesn't do that. You still have the plates afterwards and he just sits there waiting for you to come back, despite the fact that story-wise there's literally no reason for you to come back now that you know his true intentions.
Feel like they tried so hard to build Volo up as a threat, but then the moment he beats you all the tension is lost cause you can (and should) just leave. They don't even do the thing where the bad guys wait until the player conveniently shows up to destroy the world because Volo literally can't do anything without you. He needs the plates you have to achieve his goals, but even when you lose he can't take them, so the stakes become irrelevant almost as soon as they're established. Maybe it's asking too much, but I feel like they really should've had _something_ happen when you lose to give the rematch even a little bit of urgency.

I definitely felt like it was a bit jarring to go from the fight to the little "you lost! try again" message, but I think you captured perfectly why that was. Especially because losing is practically part of the fight. A game over cutscene would have elevated it greatly. I laughed imagining the player just leaving and Volo is like wait come back

I guess I get why they didn't do a gameover specifically (unusual for pokemon and without a skip option it'd get old having him repeat his original dialogue every time), but it definitely needed something extra. My first thought was to have him follow through on his threat and actually steal the plates, maybe even taunt you with them when you rematch him. It'd make the fight feel a lot more personal cause you worked so hard to get them, and at the same time they can get away with it since the plates don't have a use other than being used on Arceus itself.

@@squiddler7731 In I believe the HeartGold SoulSilver manga, the Plates could empower a Pokemon that was the same type as the Plate if they held it. If you lose to Volo, he manages to steal one or two Plates from you before you escape in a cutscene by fleeing the temple with the help of Braviary. And when you return to rematch him, he uses the Plates on his Pokemon to make them stronger so that this time he can defeat you without letting you have a chance to get away again. Though considering how tough of a battle Volo already is, making the fight against him much harder than it already was if you lose to him would be unfair.

16:55 Small thing, but Platinum actually explains why Cyrus managed to get so many people to follow him! DP doesn’t do that as much, but Pt includes several small instances of characters explaining that Cyrus was a very charismatic leader that rallied everyone up through an (ironically) very emotional front, and lied about a lot of his team’s goals.
Saturn says exactly this in D/P/Pt’s post-game, while Pt adds that scene where we see Cyrus’s public front in action through his big speech in that huge assembly room. Pt also has Cyrus literally say “Oh, I take it you saw my speech. Snicker… A complete lie, of course,” and only admits to you specifically that his “new world” is only meant for him, not his team.
DP also has a lot of Grunts act outright confused and giving you contradictory information on what the team’s overall plans are. Platinum adds extra dialogue and re-contextualizes some of it so some Grunts feel more indoctrinated into the team’s cultish beliefs instead of having them just go “idk what we’re doing lol.”
Some buy into the cultish “new world” motivation, some are genuinely there to research forms of renewable energy to make a better world (which is what their commercials claim the team is for, and why they have such huge public buildings; Saturn even says post-game (once he’s reformed and becomes the new leader) that maybe he should have the team actually pursue that for real instead of lying about it through their commercials, which were used to get more people to join them), and some are just petty thieves and jerks picked up off the street that are in it to steal Pokémon and get paid.
By the time you climb up Mt. Coronet for the final confrontation against Cyrus, some Grunts start to question their leader and start to pick up on the fact that his new world is just going to be for himself.
In B2W2, one Plasma Grunt you fight near the end of the game says they used to be a part of Team Galactic. They joined the team because they were down on their luck and had nowhere else to go. They saw Galactic disband, and starts to worry what will happen if Plasma disbands, too. That reference to 4th gen really surprised me when I played through 5th gen.
Even Cyrus himself gets more backstory added to his motivation in Platinum. In DP you hear from elderly couple in Sunyshore that a boy named Cyrus used to live there and preferred the company of machines more than people, and that his parents forced extremely high expectations onto him, making him socially distant-while Platinum lets you meet his grandfather, who regrets not stepping in and taking him in, since he was a witness to the heavy abuse and neglect he’d gone through.
Cyrus also only dies in the anime. In DP he just kinda says “grrr you beat me okay bye screw you” and leaves (lame) while in Platinum he rages, and has an emotional breakdown where Cynthia talks down to him-and Cyrus exposes his own hypocrisy hating human emotions and blaming human spirit for the source of all suffering (probably thanks to his upbringing) yet feeling these same emotions himself and using those emotions to rally others. He refuses to leave the Distortion World with you out of spite and disgust of both you and himself, but still claims that one day you’ll wake up in a world of his imagining.
Really makes you wonder how Cyllene’s family line got messed up overtime in hindsight. She says at the end of Legends that she hopes to pass down tales of the Galaxy Team and its accomplishments and goals for a “better world without strife” for generations. Little did she know, Cyrus would become inspired by this and warp her ideals into something more akin to what Volo wanted.
All of what I’m saying adds up to bits of easily missable dialogue, and I wish it was more overt than kept SO subtle that it rarely plays a meaningful part in the actual story, but I do think it makes for cool world building and character-building and helps make Team Galactic make more sense than what most people give them credit for.
BDSP even has a really well-animated and downright *chilling* Japanese-only advertisement that’s meant to represent one of Team Galactic’s commercials. In Platinum the Galactic ads are just short and standard (“Help make a better world! Find new sources of energy! Team Galactic”) but the BDSP Galactic ad they posted on CZcams feels like downright propaganda for what Cyrus and Team Galactic claim to be fighting for. I just wish the actual games would reflect on this more. (I also wish I could link it, but YT auto-deletes most comments with links in it, and I’m not about to take my chances after I rambled this much lol)
Flare, though, they never got that nuance. Lysandre definitely had the building blocks for it and maybe to have parts of Kalos actually *reflect* why he’s so distraught, maybe even expand on his relationship with Sycamore, buuut I guess not lol. Maybe if XY got a third version like Platinum it would’ve added all those extra details I talked about with Team Galactic. Really wish Pokémon games weren’t afraid to have areas that aren’t super utopian for once. Sun and Moon had literal slums! Team Skull took over an entire town they made into their own personal ghetto! Kalos could’ve had crappy areas like that, with bad people, that would’ve helped Lysandre be a little more than just a crazy person!
The whole point of him was that he was a philanthropist and scientist that spent years trying to better Kalos, but grew jaded thanks to people and areas constantly fighting for resources or eating up natural beauty. But since we’re never given any reason to see any of what he vents about in action, it just comes off as a bunch of “quit rambling grandpa, stop making me spam A.” XY was full of a lot of “tell, don’t show” which sucks.
*Zero* environmental storytelling which is weird because even you mention that SwSh had a lot of it, with examples like Spikemuth not having a Power Spot, or having crazy good presentation with the sports-themed Gym Challenge this Gen and how it’s run throughout the region, but nothing of substance dialogue-wise to really DO anything with that, for the most part. It’s so much buildup and intrigue for a really bad climax.
Pretty much everything you said on SwSh from 19:50-onward is based. I felt the exact same way lmao, I was so disappointed, especially with Bede and Rose 😔
Same for BW’s story at 26:44-onward. I was 14 a few months after BW dropped, and got it on my 14th birthday (possibly the target age demographic for this gen, since the protags were made 14 in this one too, instead of being 10-12 like usual, which might also explain the slightly more complex story) and it made me sad how badly hated this generation was, for both its story and designs, for several years. Nowadays it’s gone so far in the opposite direction that I hope people don’t start hating BW again for being “overrated” after it was “underrated” and “overheated” for over half a decade.

Wow, there is a lot more to consider in Pt than I initially thought! It's becoming apparent to me that I could have done more research on Cyrus as I was scripting this video. Quite a few people are saying there is more to Cyrus than I gave him credit for. I pretty much just went off of what I remembered of the game, but there is evidently more there. I definitely think that the justification for Team Galactic's existence is very interesting and makes sense as a part of the story. As you said, it seems to suffer similarly to Legends in that it's very subtle and pretty divorced from the main story, but considering that's a given for most Pokémon games, all of that seems pretty on-par with some of the greater concepts Game Freak has explored. Maybe I'll have to revisit Pt some day. As for SWSH and BW, I'm glad that resonated with you! I definitely agree. Thank you so much for watching and for the insights!! :^DD

A lot of the characters in legends feel a bit bland at first until you really start exploring/completing your adventure and piecing things together.
One of my favorite examples would be kamdo. Even though he wears a full set of armor leading a player to believe he would be from Galar which isn't true, he is actually from Johto but visited Galar. During the battle with Beni (the ninja) he mentions they grew up in the same town together. Later on in the game Kamado loses his temper and his accent and says "Forget the fancy talk" letting the player know that wasn't his normal way of speaking could assume that he was just inspired by the region he visited being Galar. So that brings up the question which region is he from and why is it Jotho? Well besides beni being a ninja and there being a town in Johto named "home of the ninja" (Mahogony town) and the fact he literally has a heracross in his team theres a bit more of a puzzle to be solved which reguires you to be a bit observant. Going back to the dialogue with Beni earlier, he and Kamado saw there town literally being burned to the ground by an angry pokemon which might sound familiar as there is a very special pokemon that is known to tear down villages and lives in a lake right above Mahogony which you probably guessed is Gyrados.
Beni and Kamado lost many people that day, which is the whole reason they moved to Hisui to start over. Adding a bit of environmental storytelling the statue above the galaxy hall is a magikarp but exploring around the town you can run into a crate and inside that crate has the earlier design for the statue up top and in fact it was a gyrados. Now there are many reasons for scraping the idea, maybe a design of gyrados is just to big to fit ontop of the building...or maybe the giant angry pokemon brought some PTSD to a few people and requested it to be changed. Now adding onto that there is a galarian weezing as well acting as a steam vent which would indicate someone on the design team not only spent some time in galar but also took a huge interest from it since it cleans up garbage in the air around it...which as mentioned earlier happened to be something the commander dealt with in the past.

Wow, I never noticed some of that! The connection between Kamado and Johto makes a lot of sense. I feel like Kamado was one of the characters they gave the most attention to. Pokémon has always been pretty good at environmental storytelling and very subtly slipping in pieces of lore into their level design. I wish that more of those elements were communicated in or effected the narrative, because it's interesting information but is never quite acknowledged in any pertinent way. I think those concepts deserve more recognition throughout the story & more time to sit with the player. It's sort of similar to what I said about Cogita and Volo's ancestry. 51:54 I'd just like to point out that when you return to the Cobolt Coastlands to capture Heatran and claim the Steel Plate, Palina talks about the festival shown in the end credits scene and says being able to spend time with Iscan openly was a dream come true to her.
57:22 THANK YOU for saying Irida's one of the strongest characters of PLA. Her story arc stood out to me a lot while I played PLA. Seeing the person behind her role as the Pearl clan leader in the cobolt coastlands gave me an emotional connection to her. I empathized with her after she chose to open up about her history with Palina and desire to help her friend. Watching her come to the realization that she wanted to help all of Hisui and ask for my help to get stronger made me care for her.
And when she stood up for me in front of her mentor Gaeric, I felt that faith and trust she showed in me had been earned though my actions in battling her and calming Kleavor/Arcanine. The build up and payoff was done well. And when I got the chance to travel with her? I was genuinely emotional at the thought of working with her side by side after getting to know her.
That character growth she goes through is why I recently spent an hour and a half talking with a friend about why we both liked Irida so much. Your video makes me feel so validated in how much I cared for her as a character. Maybe Adaman would have been better written if gamefreak had shown more of a personal side to him the way they did with Irida.
(I also think Irida would have made for a wonderful Digimon Protagonist.)

Characters I thought felt really misused were the bandits. They felt really pointless, and it honestly bothers me because they had some potential. Here’s a way I thought the Miss Fortune sisters could’ve been used better, or at least conveyed their desire to help more.
After the player is banished but before they meet Volo, they run into the trio. Coin and Clover are quick to pick a fight, but Charm notices the forlorn expression on your face. She (probably passive aggressively) asks what’s wrong and you tell them that you were banished. Charm, who was once a member of the Galaxy Team, empathizes with your feelings and offers to help or shelter you (though still in a stand off manner). You then have a cutscene with the four of you around a campfire and they each hint at or briefly explain why they left their respective settlements; mainly that they didn’t agree with them in many ways, to the point that they no longer wanted to even associate with their groups, and ultimately found a family in each other (I don’t know if they’re actually related. Given their appearances and that they’re from different clans I don’t think they’re blood related). You all spend the night together and say your goodbyes in the morning, needing to find a way to solve the whole red sky problem. Charm gives you the advice to find your own family like she did, and that doesn’t have to be the one you’ve stuck with this whole time. You leave and then we have the scene with the Shinx and Volo.
Also, later I think they should be the ones to find the ore for you; they roam all over the region, it isn’t a stretch that they’d recognize what you’re looking for. They claim they’re only doing it for themselves, but maybe it can be hinted that they’re also doing it for you, since they formed a small kinship with you.
AND, the advice Charm gives could be even more impactful if, like in PMD Gates to Infinity, the player staying in Hisui was their decision. They decide that, even if they have “real family” back in modern day, they’ve found a new family here in Hisui. Or maybe the hurt their new family caused them was something they couldn’t forgive and now want to start over again and find new/old family in the life they once knew.
There was SO MUCH more potential that these three had and could’ve done to influence the story and the player, it really is a shame they didn’t do much in the grand scheme of things

One medium to develop the main character, Volo, and the Clan Leaders that I think was severely misused was the lake trio. Mesprit, Uxie, and Azelf are representations of the mind. Mesprit's trial literally was like three multiple choice questions on how you felt during events on your journey. Imagine if instead you got to see into the MC and co's minds and see events from their respective perspectives. Imagine if instead of a quiz, Uxie's trial let you see the extent of Volo's knowledge and wisdom, and show his devotion and ambition, as opposed to a few lines of dialogue after you beat his initial team on spear pillar. What if Azelf's test of perseverance - instead of it having you throw balms and ask you if you wanna stop - leaned into everything the mc faced, expanding on their inner thoughts such as if they doubted themselves as Arceus' Chosen. Mesprit, Uxie, and Azelf's names are also based on Me, You, and U; it feels as if they could have expanded on that to emphasise the game's whole unity theme. This game had so many potential drivers of the characters and story that are just way too underutilised.

I think the big issue is that outside of Dialga and Palkia most of the legendaries are not well known by anybody sans Volo.
Adamant and Irida are both lost but it's through their interactions with the player that they learn to become better leaders and become a lot more understanding.
It's not pointing out but I think that's what makes it a lot stronger for those who actually notice it

    @destinywillowleaf219 Před rokem +4

okay first things first, this video is a really nice analysis of the story/game so i'm glad I stumbled across it! :D very fun watch
but the real thing that caught my attention was something you mentioned with Adaman, about wanting to see what his original dialogue was to see if it was a translation issue or present in the original script as well. And while I haven't gone out of the way to check that myself, it's not _super_ tricky to do. There's multiple let's plays of the game in English and Japanese (so long as you search with the correct title) and as long as you have a way to copy the characters and get a meaning, you can do a pretty easy side-by-side comparison. It still definitely takes time, but sometimes it's worth it to see those little differences
my best guess as of now for why Adaman seems inconsistent would be like... the connotations or specific translations chosen for words? maybe??? Like how 術 can mean "technique", "art", "way", or "spell", with Spiritomb's dex entries that mention how it was bound opting for "spell" and Vessa's description going with "magic" (which yeah that also tracks, I'm taking my translation definitions from a website). Like there's a difference between saying "it was sealed with a mysterious technique" and "it was sealed with a mysterious spell", you get different ideas from each of 'em, y'know?
one of the most interesting cases of this whole translation-connotation thing in Volo's regard that kinda got me started down the rabbit hole with Spiritomb was actually his title: **Pokemon Wielder**. Or, in Japanese, **ポケモンつかい**, which Bulbapedia translates as **Pokemon User**. つかい (Tsukai) can also be written as 使い while retaining the same meaning. But that meaning is where things have to rely on the discretion of the translator. From what I can find, 使い can mean things like "user" and "wielder", or sure, but also "messenger", "trainer", or "master". to be fair, whenever the series talks about a "Pokemon Trainer" or "Pokemon Master" in Japanese it's spelled out (i think in katakana?) but like STILL. Messenger doesn't make sense, and while "trainer" would have been accurate, "wielder" _to me_ provides a lot more immediate insight into Volo. It could mean Volo sees his team as just the means to an end (which, ouch, you have at least two, potentially THREE friendship evolutions), or it could just be a reflection of how there was no real sense of Pokemon-trainer equality at this time and calling him a wielder is just the most accurate term available since he's not a merchant anymore.
honestly "master" could've been a really interesting direction to take. we're so used to Ash's positive connotations of "I wanna be a Pokemon Master, I want to be the very best and understand them better than anyone else!" and then Volo's would be "I am a Pokemon Master, they heed my every command and there's a reason one of Arceus's original creations is by my side"
(one of these days i should make like a video essay on all this stuff. like i've kinda wanted to, but this one might've pushed me over the edge into sitting down and trying to logically explain my thought process with all I've tried to put together. all because I wanted to see if Volo's title was the same as the Pokemon wielders mentioned in SV... and i wanted to prove bulbapedia wrong about time itself.)

An interesting way they could've fleshed out Adaman would be to use the fact that Calaba should be old enough to remember what went down when his grandfather was head of the Diamond Clan. Even if she'd be a somewhat unreliable narrator for those events given her place in the Pearl Clan, it would go a long way to adding depth where it was needed if done alongside other Diamond Clan members having a bit more to say about the other heads in prior generations.

The whole video was amazing but I especially loved how you explained the plot and themes of b/w. In recent years I‘ve heard a lot of people say that the themes are quite unclear and that in the end they didn‘t follow through with the ambiguity of N. They say that because the player defeats N in his castle his side is ultimately proven wrong and his truth/ideals are entirely invalidated. This shows that moral grayness does not exist, the player is right, N is wrong - it‘s black and white. And I can totally see where they are coming from. On a surface level this seems to add up. However (not to get too philosophical in here but), this shows that they didn‘t think Ns viewpoint was valid to begin with since his ideals where shaped by his perception of the truth/reality which was constructed specifically for him by Ghetsis. They don‘t seem to recognize that the players truth and ideals are equally as constructed (on a metalevel by the game/developers). Only by really believing that N has a reasonable point and that his truth and ideals are valid do you get the full message that the game is trying to communicate. N doesn‘t get defeated because his truth and ideals are not valid. He gets defeated because his thruth and ideals won‘t leave any room for other truths and ideals to be considered…which is the point of the whole freaking game!

    • @desdar100
      @desdar100 Před 9 měsíci

Big issue with the plot of black and white that has become more obvious over the years is that it's incredibly centrist.
N's entire spiel is that Pokemon battling is wrong because humans forcing Pokemon to engage in battle for nothing more than selfish reasons.
Despite this, he does exactly that by forcing his Pokemon to battle you to prove a point that he's already refuting by engaging in the action.
This is the first clue that team plasma is full of it and sure enough, Ghetsis and the rest of team plasma prove to be nothing but a bunch of hypocrites adjust team rocket in all but name.
The reason I think that black-and-white story is revered is just because it feels big and important ( especially to those that grew up with it).
However, the overall message that you saw some come together despite their differences, but it's incredibly hard to do that the other side is actively seeking to cause harm not just you but to the world.

Really unpleasant start to the video, and I never like having to lunge for the mute button as my ears scream in agony. There wasn't anything like this in your newer engage video so hopefully that's a lesson already learned.
It was definitely funny watching this after seeing Pokemon be such a (deserved) punching bag in the other one.
The way I always described this game's story is that it's not amazing, but at least made me want to pay attention to it much of the time, which Pokemon largely fails to do. If you come into it new, it doesn't seem that special, but graded on Pokemon's curve it's a shocking jump start to what had become incredibly stale.

(Spoilers for Pokemon Scarlet & Volet)
I don’t know if this is the common consensus or not, but I actually really liked how they handled the main villain(s) of Scarlet and Violet. For as jank as generation 9's flagship titles are in a lot of areas, Turo/Sada come pretty close to N as both antagonists and satisfying climaxes to their respective narratives for me. Given that the story is all about “finding your treasure,” it’s fitting that the main villains take that idea and show how unchecked ambition in achieving one’s goals isn’t always a good thing. Especially in an age where it seems like a new ethically-questionable at best piece of tech is unveiled every other Tuesday, the idea of making an antagonist that isn’t necessarily evil, but whose reckless negligence in pursuit of their goals continues to harm people even after death really resonated with me. And although the full scope of their ambition isn’t revealed until the very late game, I feel as though your interactions with Arven give the player a clear enough picture of the professors that it isn’t super jarring when it’s revealed they are the game’s big bads. They very clearly love their son, as evident by their journal entries and the picture they have of him in Area Zero, but Arven’s storyline has already shown the player their decedation to their work blinds them from the fact they are putting people in danger. Even their A.I. assistants, who were designed in their image both in appearance and mind, could see this and defied their code for the greater good of the region. Admittedly the game isn’t the most graceful when conveying the kind of people the professors were to the player since a lot of it is told to you via exposition, (then again, it’s a bit hard to play by the “show, don’t tell” rule of storytelling when your main villain is already dead) but to me at least, this the first time a Pokemon antagonist has made me think about the themes of the game since Black & White.
…Plus it also helps that their A.I. has an absolute banger of a theme and a really damn cool battle…

It felt like there was one more step to the story which was closure, seeing the results of a resolution, like this was supposed to be how Hisui became Sinnoh, but we don't really see any development post-Volo? Like there should've been a quest where an entire new town like Jubilife Village pops up or something. Show us where certain characters went, is Volo being searched for? Did anyone see what became of him? Like in Sun and Moon we had the ending with Lusamine and Lillie leaving for Kanto and I thought that was a great way to end the story, BW had this with N leaving, ORAS's Delta Episode ended dramatically with you stopping the meteor and Zinnia leaving as her role has now finished. This game had a slow build-up to a wild twist and climax, but then everything just goes back to how it was and it's almost like the whole thing never even happened, there was no change, the region didn't develop further, we didn't see any characters grow or move around, "Pokemon Trainers" as a concept is still in its very early stages.

That's called colonialism, and a lot of that what does historically begin after the rest of the village got used to using Pokemon.
The village only being in that spot makes it so for the time being, that it doesn't feel like the villagers are trying to encroach on the tribes territory, but having them greatly expand themselves all over the area put them at war with the tribes that they claim to maintain a peaceful treaty with.
We all know IRL that they wouldn't respect what the tribes would have said but portraying that would have been incredibly tricky

another great video. although someone might say that retelling the whole story of another game is too much in an essay like this, as someone who was never interested in pokemon and knows nothing at all about it the part about black and white made me want to check out that game at least.
i liked how you started with that boss scene (although i skipped through the very beginning since watching other's reactions to something i didn't understand yet for so long wasn't interesting), and then kept coming back to it again and again, looking at it in different ways and providing more and more context for it.
the only part i really didn't like is how you sped up the part at the and. in my opinion it would've been better either added fully or removed entirely than made inaccessible. i had to slow down the video to process any of it and that made the sound quality worse.
but overall i very much liked the video and would love to hear your insights about another game! it was not only an interesting video about a pokemon game but also a video that really made me reconsider the current state of dialogue in games. thank you for this.

Cyrus does not want to make the world a better place, he is obsessed by an almost religious concept that the human spirit is flawed and seeks to achieve a spiritual state without these flaws, but he fails at that so he falls into a kind of despair were the only solution he sees is to use the deities of time and space to create a world without Spirit - a world were only he would dwell however
his followers are unaware of this fact and are being promised that in carrying out their job, they would be rewarded with the promised new world full of glory and happiness - a Propaganda summarized by the Game under the Credo of Team Galaktik
Lysandre however is essentially a Parody of Cyrus

      @CamelinCD  Před rokem

LOL I see how Lysandre would seem like a parody of that. I admittedly didn't do as much research into Cyrus as I think I could have. I was mostly speaking from what I remember of the last time I completed that game, which was a while ago. I do have to wonder, though, if it's a similar situation to Legends in that those ideas are there but not quite communicated as thoroughly as they could have been? I felt like Platinum's story was pretty divorced from the majority of the game, so Cyrus didn't have a lot of screen time to establish himself beyond just being a guy that appears occasionally. Again, though, I'm not sure. It's been a while. There are definitely a lot of interesting themes there to commentate on!

@@CamelinCD the game is not all that upfront about it but upon investigation it does provide several tidbits about his apparently troubled upbringing such as his uncle commenting on him when spoken to in the post game, as well as two elders in Sunnyshore Town
but I have to say, tough his appearances are limited the speeches he delivers when he is on screen can be quite revealing and it mostly unfolds in his conversations he has with Cynthia what kind of world view he has
especially when he has his only on screen fit of rage while she talks with him...

Not going to lie, Cyrus is increasingly boring outside of his backstory being all but stated to be the origin of Rotom(which PLA actually threw out of the list of important lore-events, because Rotom exists in the past, either as a retcon or as them getting sent there by the time anomalies or Arceus). The most interessting moment I remember he had was in the anime when he died.

Like even get some writers that were involved at creating those games though the chances of that happening assuming that it would have an reasonable time to actually make such a main line game that also feels finished, are very low. in the Sinnoh games, team galactic is a force for theft and destruction. in Legends A(rceus) the galaxy team is a force for exploration and diplomacy, in Legends A you have a number of people who look like characters from Sinnoh on different sides of conflict. After hearing Volo's motivation and goal my head cannon is that Legends A takes place in the world Cyrus created if you failed to stop him in DPP and BDSP.

I'm not saying this to boast or anything, I'm just realising maybe I never got the appeal of the Volo fight cos I just missed a major twist everyone else found exciting.

I honestly didnt think anything would top ultra necrozma as a boss fight but now looking at it I wish we got 2 waves of that fight like dusk mane and dawn wing necrozma and when you get them down to 1hp they do the zmove and it triggers a cutscene if you have any surviving pokemon and then the battle starts against ultra necrozma. In this regard it also could of been cool if nihiligo-lusimine had actually been a boss as well say we fight her team then a buffed up special nihilego.
Pokemon honestly could make way better scenes and bosses in my eyes like we should of saw leon battle eternatus and attempt to use a master ball which maybe it could of been against his own morals like he only catches pokemon in pokeballs because he wants a true bond and it's only true if they allow themselves to be caught in such a standard ball. Only for eternatus to break free of even a master ball then go to attack leon and his charizard tanks most of it but it causes both of them to fall unconscious leaving the player and hop and eventually the SWSH legends. Make leon seem better because he wanted to protect people so much he went against his own morals to attempt to do so. After that both hop and the player battle it and barely do any damage and their pokemon are constantly getting destroyed or toughing out on 1 hp. Suddenly the sword and shield relics you and hop found at the secret ruins shake in both characters's bags and the wolf legends appear in their weaken forms and the characters put the respective relics up in the air as the legends howl causing a blinding light to fill the sky on the darkest day. The peak forms of the legends are let loose and you and you battle with them as your pokemon. Then when you think you beat eternatus it gmaxes and your two other rivals Marnie and bede appear and now begins the raid battle which inevitably ends with a win.

    • @CamelinCD
      @CamelinCD  Před rokem +1

I've always wondered why they never had a main story raid battle with Bede, Marnie and Hop all together. Such missed potential!! I always imagined that final battle could be so much cooler as well. Pokémon doesn't tap into the cinematic fight scene enough, although SV and Legends' finales were pretty close. It's a bit of a stretch but I think back to how hype it is when you get, say, a Dark Souls boss down to half and a cool cutscene starts playing. I guess Volo's fight was such a breath of fresh air because it attempted something like that. Mixed up the formula a bit.

I think your perspective on Pokémon’s writing is really interesting. I’ve mostly had an ok time connecting with Pokémon characters I liked in the past, but I never really internalized that I was doing a lot of the heavy lifting by mentally filling in the gaps until you pointed it out. I really do agree that lot of Pokémon characters have great designs and great concepts, but a lack of actual development in the long run.
I don’t know if this is a stretch, but I feel like this practice of half done writing sometimes kinda works in Pokémon’s favor- when it comes to most fans at least. I think a lot of the time they offer us scraps of characters with interesting concepts or designs and we end up building off of that base line, making up our own ideas about them, and forming attachments to a character who’s half made by us and half made by the actual canon. (You actually kinda mentioned this idea as a joke around the hour 12 min mark). I know that for me, I sometimes like to build up a side character that I just like even though I know they don’t have a lot of development. I guess in a way that’s why people like characters like volo so much, because to you he could be a sympathetic villain no matter what motion you spin from from his honestly sorta vague dialogue.
Could be completely wrong about that though just kinda thinking out loud. Anyway loved the video, it was really funny and the editing was great. Really hope your channel keeps growing!

I completely agree! You put it very nicely. It comes back to the idea of making concepts vs writing a narrative, and I honestly feel like because it leans toward just conceptualizing, Pokémon has attracted a lot of fans who like writing. We can imagine a super great story using the ideas we are given. I guess that's why it's always really inspired me to talk about it--that untapped potential. As for if it's purposeful or not, I guess we'll never know, but I definitely think you're onto something there...What a unique issue for a story to have 🤔

I believe that the amendments you would make to the game would provide real improvement to PLA's story. My only real criticism is that there were a bit too many cut away gags for my taste, and most of them weren't really funny. The ones which poke fun directly at the game were good (like the part where you narrate over spoken dialogue, it really showed how repetitive the game is) but the tik-tok esce ones feel like they came out of nowhere and didn't really contribute to anything.
