Definitely good points. I've been doing CrossFit for the first time the past four months 4x week, and I notice these problems. People in the gym trying to make the fastest time sometimes cutting corners; everyone does at some point. Coming from years of gymnastics and multiple other sports, I have come to like CrossFit and definitely will stick to it (even though it's mostly lifting and cardio: there's not much gymnastics). It's the best option I have found for adults that want more out of a gym membership. I just take longer to finish a workout, so I know I actually worked out! The rest of the hoopla, I can take it or leave it, but it's nice getting to know people that you workout with.
Yes. Also, it's a great way to get into shape and stay in shape. I prefer to take my time with the barbell work though. I'm not comfortable rushing those movements for time.
Ash K Well that's CrossFit. They train to do those pull ups. That's the sport and people can't blame it for what it is.
I'm with you. I try to do strict pull ups and just take way more time in the workout
wigidy12 that's what I do. But you can't say that's a wrong way to do it. U get what I mean? Cause that's they're way of doing it.
Ash K then there's an issue with your coaches. If I my WOD includes cleans, and they're not done well technically I will be asked to repeat them. So they concentrate on technique rather than numbers.

I did CrossFit for 3 months and dropped my body fat from 24% to 21% but then my lower back was killing me. Then I joined a conventional gym and dropped from 21% body fat to 14% in just 2 month and my back no longer hurts. So yeah, I definitely think CrossFit is not good or at least not for me, now I want to get started on calisthenics.
Prob had more to do with what you were eating than what you were doing in the gym but fair play
0kojack0 Probably had more to do with the training he was enduring. Crossfit cuts many corners in exercises where the full range of motion should be performed to produce the best results and less injury.
Kyle Wanamaker can’t out train a bad diet.
@@0kojack0 I agree 100 percent. You also can't expect to see results with limited training either. You need to have both a good diet and a good training program. In my opinion Cross-fit cuts many corners in certain exercises that require proper form and technique. Many people that take Cross-fit result in many injuries because they lack proper form.
Proud Indian I’m not really sure what your point is? I’ve never done a CrossFit workout in my life but im pretty confident that anyone eating right and working out doing CrossFit will end up in good shape and very fit. I’m not saying their form is good or one thing is better than another. Good nutrition and consistency will get you results however you choose to train

both form Quality and quantity are learnt in CF. sure there are prob some crap coaches out there but I can tell you there hundred who are awesome CF coaches .. plus I have been to so many Globo gyms and watched some real crap form . so lets put this into perspective .. so many dont squat to full depth full range of motion .. pull ups are not full ROM .. push ups not chest to ground or locked out at top I could go on and on about the bad form Ive seen across many non crossfit gyms ..

I've been involved in Crossfit for the past 2 years - and at first this was a huge issue for some of us (for example I come from a martial arts background where form and proper technique is king). Our headcoach took our points to heart and implemented proper weightlifting classes (our WL coach is an Olympic WL athlete), functional body building w/ calisthenics by a coach who properly knows his stuff, and even yoga by a qualified instructor.
During training his main goal is that our movements are properly done and not just reps for reps' sake.
I count myself to be very lucky being involved with this guy as it also resonates with my fixation on proper techniques.
Thanks for your channel, Chris - it's one of the best on CZcams
I'm starting at calisthenic and I can't even do a proper push up yet, but 'mI learning everyday little by little and making my body stronger. And always looking for taking care of your body, posture, pushing yourself but in a healthy way. Thank you for these videos! You're great motivation!
How about now?😊
I’m a competitive cross fitter and honestly you’re making a great point .
Fast reps equal no hypertrophy; which is when the actin and myosin contract in order to increase size. When you just focus on speed, you lose form, it's a compromise, would you rather do 10 good pull ups in a row or 30 non engaging exercises and lack strength just to "look" like their strong but in reality people aren't really development technique but speed.
All he is saying is that he doesnt like kipping in any way shape or form, but he likes crossfit.

I’m a 55 yr old guy. Who at a young age was very active and athletic. Over 30 yrs life happened. Couch potato, junk food you name it. 2 years ago I came to a cross road. I needed to decide if I was going to live a life or give up. I decided to do something about my situation but something that would last. 2 years ago I started learning about diet and nutrition. I started out at 330 lbs. and now I’m down to about 265lbs. Great progress in my journey so far but exercise is also important so I started walking. At first I could only do about 15 min but gradually worked up to regimen of about 3 or 4 miles a day. This past December I’ve implemented mild weight training and I’ve found it made a big difference. However, since prowling around CZcams I stumbled across your ThenX channel and loved it. At this time I cannot do even one pull up. I can do about 30 push ups but not with good form so I’ve started over and am committed to doing one push up with perfect form. I went onto the internet and found a couple of local parks that are set up for calisthenics. I’m going to practice the Australian pull-up and I don’t care how long it takes me to do it but now I jacked to do one good pull up with perfect form and progress from there. I’m a year out from retirement and I want to enter my new life with an overall health and wellness mindset. I wanted to thank you for your great perspective that you’ve given to me. Here we go!!!!

True Story:
20 years ago, I came across a Men's Workout magazine that promised phenomenal results with a simple basic routine where perfect execution of the exercise was prioritized over rep amounts. It only required total devotion to form and discipline in executing them perfectly and without haste. I tried it for a week.
A week later, the only difference I noticed in my workouts were that they were easier, but I wasn't doing more of them. Even though I knew I could add more reps, I stuck to the plan against my natural inclination to do more. I focused on more perfection over more reps.
However, my body looked amazing. It truly was the fastest way to achieve results that were more than just aesthetic. There's a saying I learned recently that seems to fit this approach; "Slow is fast." Something done perfectly as needed is always more productive than something done improperly more times.
Moving forwards after that, progression was the key once you mastered the basic exercises and variety was added to expand the benefits of said workout.
So Chris is 100% correct.
This guys focus on pure strength and body type reminds me of Bruce lee
He looks better than Bruce Lee. He'd probably kick Lee's ass, too.
@@m_i_g_5108 Don't get muscles confused with actual fighting skills. Bruce Lee spent his life perfecting his skills as an actual fighter, with real fight/sparring experience and knowledge of different martial arts and fighting techniques (while being strong and flexible as well). Just because you're strong and/or swole doesn't mean you can fight. You'll likely be better than the average joe, but if you go up against anyone who actually knows what they're doing, you'll get your ass handed to you.
@@prefix253 Yup. Don't get me wrong the guy in the video is very athletic, but against real fighters he will get knocked out in seconds.
MIK GUM relax there buddy
I've been doing CrossFit for about 2 years now, and I agree with everything this dude is saying. There's too many coaches who don't train people right. Not only are these people not seeing the results they should, they're setting themselves up for some nasty injuries. Fortunately I got a great coach that stresses fundamentals above all else, and is big on progression to tougher movements. He's got degrees in sports medicine and was a trainer for about 15 years before doing crossfit. That's why I trust him. If I hadn't met him as the spouse of my wife's co-worker, I never would've set foot in a crossfit gym. I say all that to say, this guy is right about a majority of crossfitters, so if you're gonna do it, make sure you get a coach that knows his stuff.
Exactly, I'd say it very much depends on the coach. Mine also stresses form and progression over cutting corners for time. Also everyone in the gym should be holding you accountable because you're not only cheating yourself by cutting corners but you're saying with your time that you are better than everyone you beat.
It's also the same for a lot Martial Arts schools I'd say. You have a shitload of Bullshido "Masters" saying how they're this and that, and almost the totality of them have a fat gut and weigh over 300lbs... They focus on "technique" but it only really "works" if it's done in the same controlled environment demonstrated in the course. If I want to learn Martial Arts, it's cause I want to kick the other dude's ass before he kicks mine...
I read “spouse of my wife” and got really anxious for a second there
Funny that I get the video recommended moments after I've signed up for a trail training in a crossfit box. Now I completely agree with you but apparently not all crossfit boxes are like that (fortunately). A colleague of mine has been training there for years now and the part that got me is that the trainers there are all physiotherapists. They don't do the time shit and don't just push for as many reps as possible. They enforce proper posture and a another big thing for me is that people are training together, not against each other. Well, let's see..
On a side note: I mainly want to get "back" into shape, didn't do much apart from rehab after I've broke both my legs about a year ago and soon I'm allowed to go bouldering again. Still, I think when I start with crossfit I try to stick with it along bouldering.
Well, if it's about proper training, then it's definitely not Cros$f!t...!

I practice CrossFit for 3.5y and can say Chris is right. But is mistaken on one thing, doing kip or butterfly pull-ups doesn't mean the athlete hasn't been started with proper progressions. It is up to the coach to teach him on proper technique and movement standards.
There are many athletes who do not follow the standards in order to make quick (and dirty) progress and this is completely wrong.
Chris, you are awesome, respect!
I like how Chris does a workout while talking. He’s one of those coaches that can tell you to do 20 push-ups and you’ll do it without a fit. I hate the coaches that tell you to do 20 push-ups but they can’t even do 1.

You're right, I personally just ignore the 'as fast as you can' and take it as a way of pushing us to keep working to get a good number of rounds and not rest too much, but I do the actual reps correctly and never sloppy.
I’ve been working out in crossfit for a while and I’ve definitely noticed more people are focused on getting more reps than the person next to them rather than getting a quality workout

ZerotoHero like I said in an above reply to Adam M. My box was good. I had been at other bad places but the one I just left was and is a good place. Changing goals and circumstances are why I left but I am glad I found ThenX as it’s exactly what I was looking for.
I have been doing CrossFit for 2 and a half years. And you do make some relevant points here. It is true that some boxes will allow anyone to start doing butterfly’s and kipping ring muscle ups super early. But not all boxes. The ones with good coaches twill make members have strength before moving into kipping movements. For example at my box you need 10 STRICT good form pull ups before you can do kipping. And you need 15 before you can do butterfly’s. This DRAMATICALLY reduces chance of injury. Same thing with ring muscle ups. You need to know how to do strict before you can kip. It is not true there are no professions. The good boxes will make sure there is progression.
The whole reason for kipping is to improve efficiency of the movement, to make it easier and faster for competition. Obviously kipping is useless in calisthenics because it does not build strength anywhere near as fast as strict. In CrossFit though, we still do strict training to increase strength. The only time we will do kipping is if there is a fitness test, or we are working on technique.
Also some point you made is that you will never bet able to do one arm pull ups and weighted muscle ups if you only do kipping pull ups. Well for starters, CrossFitters don’t have the goal of doing one arm pull ups or weighted muscle ups, we couldn’t care less because those movements are not in our competitions. And I I said before, we train with strict strength to build muscle, and are well aware that kipping doesn’t build muscle
Why not set some ground rules in competition too, y'know to make it fair. No kipping or swinging should be allowed. Perfect form is the true measure of proper strength and efficiency in that movement.
Just wrote a comment with the same in it. Love good boxes and coaches that teach crossfit in the way it is meant to be. Sure the athletes going to the CF Games are likely to be injured but it's the same with every professional sport. Soccer players are injured every week...but people don't know about crossfit and just write comments. I could never imagine doingt butterfly pullups in the strength part
Of course the movement are in your traning, how do you klimb a rope well whit 1 handed pullup one an one after each other whit help of legs.
@@SamVibezz strength is not the sole measure of fitness.
@@hssy2jrocker i also mentioned proper form and technique here.
Excelente video! Quarantine made me realize how biased we are about how and where we should train our bodies. I got basic exercise equipment and I'm loving working out from home using different type of exercise, using my body weight, etc. Now I see no reason to back to the gym, why would I when I'm not just saying time, but also money while I do what I like the most.
hope you don't mind if I do insane beastly exercises, in excellent form while casually laying out good pointers..wth.
You know you have achieved abs when you don’t have to flex to show you abs 😂
Business Designer Duhon I don’t have to flex, but they still don’t look like that. I don’t freaking get it man. 🤷🏼♂️😂😂🤦🏼♂️😭
Under Ground Role Models that means it’s not enough. I have a lot of work to do..
Roids
Diet and alot of calisthenics
Under Ground Role Models
Abs is mostly just bodyfat percentage
Well it highly depends on trainer who shows how to do crossfit. I actually started traning at the beggining of the year and tbh it's not like we are doing everything based on speed. When I wasn't able to pull up I was said to be doing negatives from box but my negative had to take ~5s to engage muscles. When we are traning with weights we also are said to do it correctly. It is usually dinamic but not always.
"Nothing counts unless you do it correctly" - Chris Heria
That why it's better to do a few reps with good form than more reps with bad form.
This guy is so strong holy shit
Ryan Gann haha thats true , he is crazy dude
Pfft, this guy's a weakling.Look up "Ufpwerlifter 410 raw bench" and "Clarence Kennedy 750lb deadlift"
Reptilian alien Clarence and that asian bencher are very impressive, but clarence is on roids and Ufpwerlifter ONLY excels in benching. I find this dude much more impressive, he can do so many things.
How do you know Clarence is on steroids?
He never claimed natural and vaguely hinted at his usage in a video about steroids. Also, he has too much muscle to be natural, there's plenty of videos where hes shirtless and you can see that he's pretty lean, combine this with his stats: 1.78cm & 100kg, and you get an ffmi of 27 at 15% bodyfat. Too high.
edit: not to say that he doesn't have very good genetics, a good work ethic and years of dedication. He probably takes a pretty low dose.
be able to one arm pull-up is my life long dream...
Dunno if that makes sense but i could do them in middle school without proper training because i just was so damn light. I can't do them anymore though...
Lol I can do em (but just 2 reps)
@Bill P i simply installed a pull up bar on my kitchen door frame. So whenever i get a snack i just do pull ups until i can't anymore
Just try.. I started with calisthenic 5 months ago and i can do them
@iodineclip
If you want to learn this you should try the negative version of that (you simply go from the top to the bottom as slow as you can. It helps a lot, you can also help yourself with that movement on a machine or using rubbers).
Good luck and comment when you succes it!
Slow is smooth, smooth is fast. Something to live by. If you try doing something fast the wrong way, you make the journey longer and harder. Take your time and do it right, soon enough, you won’t even notice how slow you’re going because speed is t what your going for. Anyway, I love your videos. I just recently subscribed maybe about 3 weeks ago and Ive been watching your videos everyday since 🙌🏼
I could not have said this better myself! Good guy with such good knowledge!!
I’ve noticed slower reps of any exercise with proper form makes it a lot harder
Chris Yep. Time under tension makes your muscles work more because they have to hold the position longer than they would if you were doing it faster.
And it gives you more muscle💪💪💪
But if you want to be explosive you need to move a heavy weight fast , if you want do build big muscle , time under tension is the key
Collab with Austin Dunham!
Austin aint on their level..
V7ActTheFoolV7 thenx aint on Saustin's level
how about a collab with Mike Vazquez.:)
lol.. you dumb as fuck stop
Austin is on their level
I love crossfit but everytime I see someone doing a kipping anything I want to laugh.
it's a step down from a strict pull-up.
You have a good point about progression, this gives you a motive and a goal to work towards. There is the next level you are trying to advance to, compared to if you do the same thing over and over, you may be just spinning your wheels.
Even your kipping pull up looked graceful! Great overall advice, and a trap that I've fallen into.
Don't count reps, make reps count.
Words to live by😆👍
WHAT A QUOTE!!!
@@gumikebbap I can't take credit for it 😀. I'm not sure where I first heard it put so succinctly. It may have been Athlean X.
Your kipping pull up was NOT a kipping pull up, again @Officialthenx, why do you claim to have coached CrossFit when it's absolutely bullshit? Little advice, don't talk about stuff you don't know about.
Sean Foster that’s what I love about cross fit, it’s elegant, you can tell from his tummy muscles that he favours one side, I need to learn to do this to fix a hernia xx
I remember when first doing push ups and my gym buddy was hating on me for being slow and putting out too few reps. Told him i'd rather have proper form and control then look like a fish flopping on land lol. That guy doing pullups hopefully figured out how to actually work out after that.
With gyms about to close again with the next wave of covid, what do you recommend for someone who has to start doing calisthenics but is too heavy? I can barely do 2 pullups. Since i can do 2 pullups, i want to start from there. I can do pushups with no issue. Situps are easy too. What do you suggest?
Perfect form! Makes perfect sense! :)
That being said, I have to say the person with the (in my opinion) highest amount of energy I ever personally met was a woman doing crossfit training. We were helping a friend to move to another place, and she has so much power and endurance that everyone else, including me, was highly impressed. I was (only) doing Parkour at that time. I later learned she is actually not only practicing it but is a trainer. Wow, she was strong!!
I think Calisthenics gives extremely strong muscles and great body shape, also enormous will power required to engage those muscles at maximum strength. Crossfit may not shape your body as well, but the endurance you get is incredible. Cool thing would be to combine the strengths of both!
I like how he just casually does one arm pull-ups and waited muscle-ups
Lol Chris you are a beast you are calmly talking while doing exercises that not many people can do and act like it’s nothing XD my favourite athlete
woohoo!
OFFICIALTHENX wow you replied!!
CrossFit trainer here. I agree with your points. If you go to a CrossFit trainer certification class you are taught the charter of mechanism, consistency then load. No one should be doing kipping pullups before they can do a strict pull-up. And believe me every crossfiter wants that ring muscle up. Speed is one aspect of fitness that we are after but not all. There are plenty slow and heavy workouts and skill sessions that are not timed in a good CrossFit program. And if you watch the top athletes they are doing more and more of your advanced movements the rest of us are just getting there. There's only so much time an individual can allot to training so instead of focusing on being advanced in one specialty we choose to be good on a lot of things. As a coach, if you move perfectly I will encourage you to move faster until your form breaks a little and work at that pace to build capacity untill your form is perfect again. But I wouldn't allow your form to break down so much to the level of unsafe. Intensity is relative to the individual. The world's best gymnast can't win a strong man competition. We don't want to train one thing to the extreme at the expense of other aspects of fitness. Constantly varied. That's the key
I do CrossFit but I think a huge issue is the short time to get an L1. Most of the best coaches tend to also have more than just L1 knowledge and training, as they have prior coaching experience in sports like Weightlifting or Gymnastics. Will say props to you for knowing how to manage load and form - something many CrossFit coaches at gyms have no clue about.
Most of the top athletes like Justin Medeiros and Tia Toomey are not doing the classes. Instead, they are doing full on training programs like HWPO, PRVN, and Mayhem. They spend so much time addressing their own weaknesses and enhancing their strengths.
Damn! This is quality content!!!
I wanna look like this guy when I get reincarnated as an Asian dude.
😂🔥
Lmao I didn’t even know he was Asian
😂😂
U built like my grandma
@@kefkapalazzo1 he looks half, heria is a filipino surname as well. But I could be wrong, Chris hasn't said anything about his nationality anywhere other than being american.
WTH was with that CrossFit pullup? 1:52. That's not a pullup. That's someone having a seizure on the pullup bar.
Exactly if I saw someone in the gym doing that I would call an ambulance
The dude wrecked the inside of his hands after doing that too.
I've been practicing CrossFit for a month now I've never seen someone doing that. but that was funny af
That was a butterfly pull up. Fastest way to get the numbers in. Most people who do these can't do one real pull up.
Paulette Gustafson that’s not true. Butterfly pull ups are very hard and they also require strength to not totally crush your shoulders. It’s the other way around; most people who can do strict pull ups can’t do butterfly pull ups.
On a personal basis I absolutely love my CF training. But I am 50+ and my background in the gym and on the roads is now a benefit to me. Sure I might do the kipping style but I always start with absolute strict movements. It is the only way to make sure I keep my form and increase my strength. And the only tutorial I have found precious to prepare muscle ups, is Herias... Thank you!
Your a beast bro. I'm gonna be your member
This video should be called " the problem with bad coaching". I wasn't allowed to do anything kipping until I had at least 10 to 20 of a movement strict and unbroken. All good, I'm still going to subscribe to this channel and follow on Instagram, I respect you as an athlete.
+nik garcia true! Thanks for watching!
he knows his shit, his control is phenomenal
🙏🏼
Yes, I even tought that he was going to keep talking while holding that planche
I just started doing pushups for last 1 month. I want to do one arm pushups qnd handstand pushups one day. . My question is how long it took you for progressing from simple pushups to advance pushup forms ?
Wonderful video. I crossfit as a senior guy and I love your lesson here.
I'm with you Bro!!! I respect all athletes, however, proper form and progression is the goal!
The CrossFit I go to, we work on various progressive movements before we do any WOD. Such as strict pullups, weighted pull-ups, weighted dips, etc.... Im working on strict pullups but it's a slow process.
Now this man can do a proper pull up thx for showing excellent form , well done
I agree with the points in this video. I did crossfit and although it's not a "race", times were posted on the chalkboard. The pull up style and a few other things started to wreck my left shoulder. Now I go slow and get a meaningful outcome.
Goodhart's Law: Any measurement which is used to evaluate outcomes will become corrupt. Keep track of what you're actually doing and whether it's getting you what you want.
Ohhhhh science!
@@chrisramberg No, it is logic
I stand corrected
@@chrisramberg that is clearly a logical statement, there is no derivation of any equation or function. Science is built on logical foundations, axioms.
Yah. I understood you the first time. That’s why I said I stand corrected. You seem kinda wired up; too much coffee?
Bro good vid, quick question were you created in final fantasy?
😂😂
I hope chris reads this and laughs at himself
lmao
This makes me feel better because a lot of the movements I train are very slow, I still need to work on some explosive power too which I believe is different than the type of speed you were talking about here (because explosive is still about proper technique). Anyways, this week I was doing a very slow climb up (think muscle up with your feet on the wall as assistance) because I don't have the strength to go faster but my technique was good, and the coach commented how the slow is much harder and I wasn't even thinking about that, I was just thinking 'I want to make up it this damn wall already' haha. It was a struggle, but I did it a couple times with a breaks in between. I train lower progressions too ofc but I like trying the more difficult ones to see if I'll surprise myself and I did! I would not have been able to climb it a month ago.
Shout out to Chris from down under in kiwi land. 54 and just started calisthenics training. This guy is motivational! I haven't broken or torn anthing yet, but 'F' I'm sore, In a nice addictive way. This calisthenics is some of the hardest exercises I've ever done. Friggin harder than pushing weights. I only wish I'd found calisthenics in my youth, however no better time to start.
