The fan is normal, it doesn't sound like a jet. It's job is to keep the hardware cool whilst you game. The sound is exaggerated because of the proximity of the microphone. It will come on and off whenever you game, whenever needed. If it sounds extremely loud and it feels very hot, it's probably because it's dirty and needs its ventilation cleaned - OR it's been a few hours of nonstop gaming and the console requires a break to avoid overheating and powering off improperly.
