5 2019 NBA Draft Prospects With A LOT To Prove In The NCAA Tournament

  • Seemingly every single year, a handful of NBA draft prospects take advantage of the opportunity that the NCAA tournament provides to give one last impression and make a statement about their perceived strengths or weaknesses at the next level. Whether it is a late 1st round prospect that jumps into lottery conversations, a 4 year player that starts getting previously unseen 1st round consideration... or in more dramatic cases - movement within the top 10 or even top 5 of the draft. And with the 2019 NCAA tournament now upon us... this draft class provides a unique opportunity for those prospects that still have something left to prove... because well, basically all but one of them do in fact have things about their games to prove or disprove. There is a 99% chance that Zion Williamson is going to be the 1st overall pick in this years draft... but beyond that, maybe more so than in any draft class in recent memory, things are entirely up in the air.
With that said, welcome back everybody my name is Tucker, and today’s video is going to focus on 5 prospects that could dramatically increase or decrease their draft standing based off of their performance in this years NCAA tournament. These are players at the top, middle, and end of the 1st round that could see huge movement in their draft projection depending on how well they play over the next few weeks... and I’ll also talk about what specifically they need to show and to prove to NBA draft evaluators to put themselves higher in the draft order... lets go ahead and get started.

Totally agree with the assessment of White. I don't understand how he can be in the 20s in the draft while Cam Reddish is top 5. I get that Reddish is 4 inches taller, but it's not like White is small for his position. And he's better at, well, everything besides defense.

Ja Morant is a hot name, but I’ll pick a player from the same conference who’s team was on of the last at larges: Dylan Windler of Belmont. He’s 6’7/6’8, plays the stretch four for Belmont and is really good at it too, scoring 21 points per game with 43% shooting from behind the line on 7 attempts per game; he also has shown NBA range already in college. He also is a good rebounder, though isn’t the most athletic or the best defender. Still, there’s a reason he’s averaging 21 and 11, and if he can show out against Temple, Maryland, and then against an athletic LSU team, a shooter like him may move up the draft boards; if he’s seen as a stretch four at the next level, which I personally do, he’d likely be one of the 3-5 best shooting full time fours (as in, that’s the player’s primary position) in the league day one.

    For me:
    1) Terance Mann - Lengthy, level-headed, and mature guard that can do a bit of everything. Can mature into a good role player or starter on the right team like the Spurs, Heat or Nuggets.
    2) Phil Cofer - 3 & D vet that plays hard and can give teams that spark off the bench. Could see him getting picked in the 2nd round or getting onto a G-League team.
    3) Keldon Johnson - underrated and can possibly catapult himself into the lottery.
    4) Tacko Fall - he’s 7’6”. That’s basically it. He’s gotten progressively better over his time at UCF but is still a project with tons of upside.
    5) Tre Jones - he’s a floor general. If he has a game or two during the tournament where he UNDOUBTEDLY was the reason for an efficient offense then he’s golden. Locking down some of the higher ranked PGs would help too.

RJ: Try to make his teammates better
    - Basically sums up all the points about one-man showing and being inefficient. With how much praise Steve Nash gave his godson, I expect him to play with the high IQ we know he has.
    Coby: Be the leader
    - Funnily, the opposite of what RJ need to do. Watching him in the Duke matchups, he looks like the 2nd best player on the floor aside from Zion. He's scoring and creating with feistiness, but he feels like a secondary or tertiary player when he should be the one calling the shots.
    Rui: Experience
    - He can be a Derrick Favors or get a shot and become a Millsap. He just needs to continue to flesh out his game and keep playing. Nothing really to add.
Cam: Everything not related to his body
    - The biggest problem I have with Cam is his turnovers/fouls, this feeling that everytime he's targeted something bad is going to happen. I don't know if it's IQ, comfort level or bust signs. Cam needs to steal as many tips from his teammates and coaches to unlock his potential.
    Morant: Higher level competition
    - 10 assists at any level is no joke and he's crafty enough to get to the FT line, but I feel Morant's situation is the perfect storm. You look at his team and his style of play and the conference he plays in and he stands out as someone who should have been recruited to a better school. Now, he has to show in 1v1s and in team play, he is on the same level as the Big 12, SEC, ACC guys.
    *Bonus: Zion: Dominate
    - We've seen how good Zion can be, but he looks like the perfect secondary player, a person you put next to a great facilitator to unlock their best use or around shooters. I don't think he's a leading man, BUT that doesn't mean he can't be a first overall pick as a complimentary player can be a star (easiest examples: the KD/PG to Russ or the Blake to CP3). He can dominate in a league dominated by scoring guards because his space to operate is open. He just has to keep dominating (simple, right) where he should.

@@aaronaaron5286 He also takes 19 shots which is 6 more a game than the next person and 31% from 3. He was also touted as someone who could play point. If he shifts over the playmaking more, he lessens his shots, becomes less 1-D so he's able to get better looks, and his general basketball IQ increases as he's able to better read offenses and defenses. You have to understand that RJ is still a top prospect with his faults, but it's his most glaring flaw. Shooting 46% doesn't mean he can't be a better teammate on a team that clearly needs playmaking to get going.

I disagree with the assessment of RJ as a facilitator. Averaging 4.1 assists from his position is quite good. I mean, honestly, stack that up against any one at the 2-3 position in the country. He's had 10 games with at least six assists.
Duke is also never a high assist offense. They haven't had a guard average over six assists since 2004. And that's counting PGs, which RJ is not.

Saying Ja Morant doesnt play against good competition is a stupid debate. I mean, Lebron James jumped from playing against High school kids to dunking on NBA all-stars a year later. Im not comparing Morant to Lebron, just in regards of competition.
