  • How to clean the Hybrid Cooling Fan on 2010-2015 Toyota Prius | Hybrid Cooling Fan clean
    In this video I explain and show how to remove the hybrid cooling fan on a 2010-15 Toyota Prius. This is a very important maintenance item as it helps to maintain the battery temperature and when the fan is dirty it doesn't move the appropriate amount of air to cool the battery.
    Depending on where you live this will need to be done more often. I live in the Pacific NW and the fan was dirty but not terrible after 12 years and 135k miles. I've seen some very dirty fans cause hybrid batteries to fail long before they should have.
    Also check the filter for the hybrid fan and clean it regularly. The earlier years didn't come with a filter but you can add one if yours isn't equipped with one. It is located on the rear part of the right rear door.

    Thank you very much Sir, I used this video to clean my 2010 Auris hybrid battery fan, couple small differences, from prius , but almost identical! ;) great stuff!

      Fantastic! That's the nice thing about most of these Toyota products, there may be some small differences but enough is the same that most of the time people can use it to figure things out as you did, good job! Thanks for your support, I truly appreciate it.

    Always practise safety. High Voltage. The ORANGE level should always be pulled and disconnected. Including the 12v battery. Never play with the HV battery while it's still hot.

      I never played with the HV battery. Cleaning of the fan can be done without messing with the HV battery or even touching the HV system in any way. If you watch the video you will notice that I never touch any of the orange HV cables or the HV battery itself. Yes, be aware of where you are working but this is not a dangerous thing to do in cleaning the fan.

      @@jimsgaragetoys This is a very informative video and I enjoyed it. However, it's always good to practise safety. Especially when you are teaching. You want to set a good example. Just FYI.

      @@KasraOskuie I do agree, and I do try. This video doesn't touch the HV system so I feel it's better to not even have people touch it in any way when they don't have to. Luckily, there is nothing dangerous that is being worked on in this video.

    Very informative! Thank you! I wish you would have also shown how and with what you cleaned it with. Also when I put mine back on the following morning. Connected it but did not put everything back on so I could make sure it was working it didn't kick in and rotate. I took the car for a 2 mile drive but it still didn't kick on. Is there a reset of some kind that needs to be done? It's connected to the power source so what might I have missed or should I still check?

    • @jimsgaragetoys
      @jimsgaragetoys  Pƙed 2 měsĂci

      I just cleaned it with small detailing pads, like stiffer Q-tips that I buy from Griot's Garage to clean hard to reach places and I used some Simple Green cleaner. It did the trick quickly on each blade.
      The fan doesn't always run but not having everything put back together might also prevent it from coming on. There may be a sensor that knows it's not enclosed but I'm not sure. There are only a couple of connections so I would install everything back together and see how things are working. If there's a problem you will get a message or CEL that something is wrong with the battery cooling system. No messages, all is working as intended. Just make sure the few connections are all reconnected.

      @@jimsgaragetoys Thank you for replying. Fan is working and everything is back in place. The only issue I'm having now is getting the front part of the bottom back seat to click into their slots. I'm knelt on them and sat on them and pushed on them but they won't snap in. ?

      @@c.mcmorris9198 Most likely the rear of the seat isn't lined up properly. If it is the front should clip in pretty easily. Play with the rear of it and make sure that is lined up properly. You might have to remove it and start over a few times until it finally pops back in.

      You would get some type of CEL if the cooling fan and/or system wasn't working. I would also imagine that you could drive around without some of the covers installed so you could hear the fan working.

    Wow! That's a lot of work to clean the fan. I've seen a similar strategy employed on other CZcams videos. I really wonder if all this is necessary, or could you use one of those long, flexible, and narrow vacuum houses that are used to clean down into the exhaust venting of a clothes dryer? It looks like it could be inserted into vent supply opening and snake around to the fan. Obviously, it won't do as good a cleaning job as what you did, but it's a lot better than nothing...which is probably what a lot of people will do after seeing all that you did in this video.

    • @jimsgaragetoys
      @jimsgaragetoys  Pƙed rokem +2

      It's really not as bad as it looked. None of it was difficult but filming it takes extra time. Your idea is a good one but I don't think it would work. I found the dirt on the blades was caked on and didn't just come off with a vacuum. It needed to be cleaned more directly. Don't let the video scare you off from doing the job correctly, and the best thing for battery health.

      @@jimsgaragetoys Thanks for the response and feedback!! I have a 2011 Prius. In all the years since then that I've brought it in for service, the dealership has never mentioned adding the filter cover that Toyota started installing on that inlet port to prevent dust and debris from contaminating the fan. đŸ€Šâ€â™‚ïž It's a simple, $15ish clip-on item. I think Toyota started equipping Priuses with that filter in late 2012. Hm...I have a new idea based on your information. đŸ€” What if I add a cylindrical brush that is about the diameter of the inside of the fan to the end of that clothes dryer vacuum hose? I could then agitate the fan blades with the brush while the vacuum sucks up the debris. What do you think? Kind regards, Luigi

      @@MrLuigi-oi7gm Yes, I do believe that everyone with an early 3rd Gen Prius should add the filter and was easy to get from the dealer. You wouldn't know if that would work until you try but I don't think it would work well. You also need to completely clean the blades to make sure it's still balanced when spinning. I've found over the years when I try to do a short cut it only takes me more time after I end up doing it the right way. đŸ€Ł

      Truly not really that much effort involved, & unfortunately no - especially if you've got dogs who shed a lot & don't already have a filter you really do need to disassemble to get in there.

      How are some posters of Kathy Ireland offensive? She was a model that I've loved since she was discovered when we were both 17 years old. My wife used to get me a calendar of hers every Christmas. She made sure that the posters were dry matted so they wouldn't be ruined when hung in the garage. Even she doesn't understand how anyone thinks something that isn't soft porn in any way can be offensive. So when you go the beach and girls are in swim suits you are offended? I'm sorry that you feel the way that you do but I do these videos to help people. I might not agree with everything that they do but that's beside the case.
