  • I'm only halfway through my gap year but I've already had so many valuable experiences that I'm convinced this is one of the best decisions I've ever made. In this video I wanted to recap 6 reasons (so far) that I'm really glad I took a gap year - how it helped me to gain skills, see more of the world, and become more independent.
    This video is in collaboration with the Gap Year Association's Gap Year Exploration Month #explorethegapyear. Throughout this month, there will be in-person gap year fairs, online webinars to answer your gap year questions, and scholarship contests. If you're considering taking a gap year, please take advantage of these resources! (I wish I had known I could win $3,000 for my gap year 😭 but now I'm trying to help the next generation of gappers instead, hahaha)

    I took 2 gap years after I finished high school and now I'm 3rd year undergrad and I am soooooo glad I took those 2 gap years (even though I didn't plan to), because by the time I got into my dream college I was 100% certain I want to go to that school. Now I am thinking of taking another gap year after my undergrad to work and travel a little before maybe applying for graduate school, but I am still thinking about it. Anyway, if anyone is not 100% sure what they want to do with their life after high school is over, I definitely recommend taking a gap year. It helped me so much with getting to know myself :)

      @@yaraal-sabbagh4307 well I was lucky enough that I could live with my family for the first year. I did some volunteer work and worked during summer for my family. I already knew I wanted to study Chinese, but before that I was a bit afraid to pursue that. 2nd year of gap period I went to China (I got a scholarship from Confucius Institute where I was taking Chinese language classes) do I spent few months there. For everyone it would be different, but try to do different things, if you can of course. Where I live it's much different than in the USA or other countries, so my experience might be totally different than yours. ♥️

    I'm 3 years into my 'Gap' year. Worked just most of the time and now that I saved enough and wanted to travel for a year straight with no work interruption, something came in the way. So I'll just apply for uni and see how everything evolves. I agree tho, traveling and being away from school made me genuinely excited for uni, and I miss learning, so I've been listening to online classes. Going into uni now I will be so much more motivated to smash it and not see it as a burden. Also what I have in mind to study now is different to what I thought. Would have had no real job opportunities.

      Hi can I ask what scholarships you were eligible for once you were applying for college? I'm just getting out of my three-year gap year and looking to apply to college but a lot of external scholarships are only available for high school seniors or those enrolled in universities

    • @leahfernandez8106
      @leahfernandez8106 Před 2 lety

      @@paigecensale Hey! This is not a scholarship, but in my Country I get finacially supported from the government because my parents are low income. Its not much, but it helps to pay for rent and food. Then everyone up to 25 that is still in education gets around 200 Euros from the government(actually my parents get them, but this finacial aid is ment to help parents support their kids and since I am living on my own, my parents forward it to me). There are loads of scholarships I could technically apply for. Every political party has a scholarship programm, then independend organisations, some focus on grades, some on your social engagement, some on you situation(like refugee, hard up-bringing, illness/disability), some on what you study( MINT-Degrees are often supported, especially if you are a women in MINT). Then there is one that goes thru your own University, its half paid by government and half by local businesses and supports students at that University. I applied for this one now.
      But I am guessing you might be from the US? Thats a different story. I honestly would have either gone to a community college or not study at all and teach myself. It sucks, that you have to worry about finances so much when studying.

I'm almost 10 years older than you but feel very much in the same headspace as you - I'm taking a career break to have a gap year at 28. BUT due to the Big ‘Rona, that plan is VERY up in the air and most likely won’t happen. I’m really considering taking a gap year and working on starting an Etsy shop for my art while saving money to attend a school that’s farther away (Oregon State University) and has a better design program. It’s difficult to get excited about stuff these days, but this is something that I’m super excited for and it gives me a purpose!

      that's true but you don't have to comment that, she is talking about HER gap year, not yours. there's a lot of other options if you don't want/can't afford traveling. you clicked on this video for advice and she is just using examples about her traveling.

      HoldingCa i get what you’re saying but if you plan in advance and work hard you can achieve it. Ik people who spent only 15,000 or less and they worked throughout high school to achieve most of that money.
