These guys set the standard for a perfect video, direct, fast, educational and accurate. No BS. Thank you I wish other people made them like this
i agree!
This video is a disaster. The guy should not put videos on YT.

He needs to learn how to use a multi meter correctly, he needed to be on the 20k scale to be able to read 10,000 ohms or more ! Correct your video or give me the coil you misdiagnosed !!
THIS is how videos are supposed to be done. To the point, no need to pose for the camera, just explain the problem and provide the solution. 3 - 5 - 10; got it.
Straight to the point, this is what we need in the community. Thanks!
Great video, so happy you should what to set the multi meter to very clear and helpful.
Just saved me a heap of work.
Cheers from Australia
thank you for this simple rendition and conclusion of how to fix. my bike is currently making that same noise upon start up but doesn't fully crank. im going to get one today and hopefully determine if this has been my issue this whole time.
Best description on how to check a coil I’ve seen 3 5 and 10 three numbers I’ll always remember! now to switch out one of my coils and see if it’s really what was stopping her from starting
are these 4 cylinder engs????? one bad coil should not stop it from running on 3 cylinders ????????????
Short. Simple. Helpful. GOLD!
Short. Simple. Helpful. (not) HORSE MANURE because it is WRONG!
Best video on the net simple cheers mate and I like the way you explained the settings
Direct, fast and informative thanks guys you did the trick
Clear, concise, no distracting music - nice!
and wrong?
Excellent video. Easy to understand and straight to the point. Cheers TB
Big help and a big thank you from England
EXCELLENT VIDEO IN THE PRIMARY I DID GET 4 OHMS. BUT IN SPARKS PLUG TEST I NEEDED TO GO TO 20 K IN ORDER TO GET A READING 13 OHMS
Unbelievable video, thanks guys!!!
Great how to video. Thank you!
Thanks for this. I was sure I wasn't testing correctly, but you just confirmed I was! I need a pair of coils!
Glad I could help!
They should have more views because it's straight to the point
Great video!Thanks
EXCELLENT VIDEO ! Thank you !
you should put on 20k, becasue it will not read 10k on 2k (2k or 20k is max resistance it will measure)
Yes, the meter was on the wrong setting to read 10k. That coil may have been good.
Yes ,when I moved to 20 k than I got a reading,
@@noearias2006 .. THEN I got a reading..........
Yeah great video and that's why subscribed.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR VIDEO I REALLY LIKE IT
Any idea about the safty platform on a honda shadow ? My bike wont start oil level nut safty sidestand and?
Do you have to disconnect wires from the coil post before testing? Or can you leave the wires on post and test? Thanks
Can you turn power on and use a test light to check power going to cable ?
Loud n clear 👍👍
Perfect video. 1 question. The last test you summized a bad coil. Could a bad spark plug wire give you the same reading? Currently trying to diagnose a similar issue.
Ty straight to the point
My 2003 Sportster has 3 leads on the coil (not including spark plug wires). How do I test that?
Great advice
This by far the best video regarding coil problems. Other people talk for 17 minutes just to show you something that isnt even usefull. Thank you!
Not sure this is correct! Shouldn't you test plug cap to plug cap to get the 10,000 ohms? The two windings in the coil have no physical connection I believe.
Right on thanks
Thank you!
How do you test a coil with two spark plug leads? If you do the same test then you dont get a reading from the spark plug leads. There must be a different test for duel leads.
Are these ohm parameters correct for a Harley 2009 Ultra?
i like this one short safe and on the topic
Did ya make another vid, as you said? As I can't find it.
Beautifly done
I know this is a dumb question but did the bike start or not? I think I have the same issue with mine not starting either the coil cdi or stator but am unsure as to which is at fault.
excellent !
Thanks 👍
you fucking rock dude yessss! i been wondering why my bike wont start and your bike here did the same thing mine has been doing!!
Thanks man
I don't have 12 volt power incoming to the coil! have new crank sensor new coil still no 12 volt in the coil .. help
Is that for Yamaha to
This one is the only simple and effective
Can you post the video you said you’ll show the difference with the readings
Agreed I looked everywhere and cannot find one, this was a great video that got straight to the point but I would like to see how a new coil on the same machine reads
3 and 5 ohms between terminals and from one terminal to ht lead 10ohms will be a good
The primary and secondary are always isolated, no? There should be no reading, or infinite resistance, between the spark plug wires and the coil's primary when it is all disconnected. Meter should go between the 2 spark plugs wires for the secondary. Waiting for a new coil now since my FLSTF coil primary failed open after removing from storage after 8 years....
Yes, you are correct. These are 2 separate circuits, primary and secondary. Primary is where you read the 3 or 5 ohms, across the small terminals.
@@darrylstevens4516 the coils a re nothing more than this a long copper insulated with a type of varnish then wound around apiece of iron the primary and secodary are not connected except magneticly on the same piece of iron the secondary is much larger than primary due to turns ratio to generate very high voltage to to the dist and plugs
Now I'm not an expert. But shouldn't you have had your ohm meter on a 20,000 ohm setting and not a 2,000 ohm setting if you're trying to read 10k ohms?
ha, yes you are correct. however the decimal will just be moved and you will still get the reading you need. but correct. good eye there Matt ! ( i miss that i guess ) thanks for the correction.
thomas brian no problem. Thanks for the video its great
@@thomasbriansavingmoney Does this work for dirtBikes? 2011 Kawasaki Kx100DBF...Any insight would be appreciated!
Very educational. One question though. My 04 883 sportster does not have these leads to do the test the same way you did. How do I test the coil?
Did you ever find out how to test. Got the same bike I need to do this on.
Thanks
@@Blastsbeatstilldeath Some jackass at a place that claims to be Harley told me they have some special tool.
But these same mechanics fucked my bike up bad. And lied to me multiple times. So don't believe what you hear all the time I guess.
Hello!! I have 3.0 from lead to lead but no reading from lead to spark. Is the coil bad?? Thanks nice vid BTW!!
I'm having that same problem, did you ever figure it out?
@@ironheadbill it was a bad battery. I still running the same coil 3 years later. 👍🏼
my buell xb12s cg lighting doesn't start button 🔘 nothing happened can you send me answer if you want to helping
it should be a two wire switch. just connect them
My Sportster quite on me today..2.5 on trigger and power nothing on power to plug...yep I believe I have a bad coil....
Did you ever make that follow up video of a good Harley coil? Tried your procedure on my 98' Harley Heritage coil and a new one thorough the trigger post and spark plug wire and they both indicated a bad coil. Saw another video from Rocky Mountain ATV and they demonstrated the exact same test and it came out with a negative reading as well. They also demonstrated that this procedure would not indicate a bad coil through dual spark plug connectors. The manual says to test the secondary directly inside the spark plug openings in the coil and not through the one trigger post and spark plug wire. Both coils read good versus trigger post to spark plug wire. Does your procedure work for only Sportsters? Just curious, bro. Thanks
Thats what I am wondering,Sorta.I was wondering if it will work for a dirtbike also? 2011 Kawasaki Kx100DBF.Any help would be appreciated!
@@DIXIEMAFIA251 The difference for me was testing inside each coil outlet without the spark plug wires inserted for a good reading. The coil should indicate how many ohms are from the factory. My coil is dual fire and not single fire. Hope this helps....
whats the trigger
I know this is an older video, but when you measured the first coil for 10k ohms you has your meter at 2k ohms and that’s why it read infinity
Thanks a lot. 👊👊
How long do coils last?
most things that have a year warranty will last 13 months, two year warranty , 25 months etc. manufactures like to hit it close and they know best. i have had to change many motor cycle coils in my life and i would say on average maybe 4-8 years, in most cases
@@thomasbriansavingmoney thanks.
your scale is wrong you have it at 2k when you're trying to read 10k ohms
Hi bro, I need help. I got a Magna and having the same problem. I need more explanation. Do yo have WhatsApp?
You needed to SET YOUR METER to 20K not 2K........ Go to 1:30 to see the mistake.
only good ohms tests is if it tests open replace it you can tell if its grounded to the iron replace it a good way test for open primary coil see if volts are present at condenser lead with points open and switch in run pos this tells you coil is good
I tested my coil the same way your showing same results but it’s a good coil I’m riding it don’t think your checking it properly js
You need to redo this video, as you dont have it on 20k and the coil may be good
didnt test the wire..could be a bad wire.
Wrong. To test a coil or no start, you first check your feed wires on your coil using the 20V setting on volt meter. Then if you have no voltage at your plug wire with ignition on, that would mean your coil has failed. Your way takes four times as long and isnt as accurate as mine. And why would you take a screw driver and stick in the plug wire and crank engine over, when you can turn ignition on and simple check your voltage with your meter and not even have to crank the engine over? With ignition on, my way is all you have to do is check the feed wires and the plug wires which takes 10 seconds or less to determine a good or failed coil
This straight up does NOT work! I tested 2 coils on running bikes and it showed nothing on the output. Thankfully a buddy had a spark plug tester that goes between the wire and the coil.
you are on the right track. however, you are slightly misleading.
TO STAY IN GOOD PRACTICE: (referencing factory dual fire coils from 84 to 06 ish)
Disconnect battery.
Remove coil, disconnecting all wires.
TAKE CAREFUL NOTE AS TO WHAT WIRE WENT TO WHERE TO AVOID HEADACHES. (a tip mainly for the newbies to personal bike repairs at home) Everything you can do to make your experience hassle free benefits you as the important things aren't overshadowed by potentially frustrating mistakes that could have been avoided.
Resistance should read BETWEEN 2.5 and 3.1 Ohms across the two small terminals where you will see nuts holding the ground signal wire on one, and the constant power feed wire on the other.
Between your large terminals where you plug in spark plug wires, you should see BETWEEN 10,000 and 12,500 Ohms.
Out of those ranges in EITHER DIRECTION indicate a faulty coil.
A smart wrench removes the coil and all connected wire leads in theory to avoid any potential resistance interference.
***IF YOUR COIL DOES NOT HAVE A SET OF "SMALL TERMINALS" AND INSTEAD HAS A WEATHERPROOF QUICK PLUG, YOU HAVE A DELPHI COIL. DELPHI COILS ARE ONLY SUSPECTED FAILURES. YOU NEVER KNOW UNTIL YOU REPLACE THEM IF THEY ARE BAD.
A coil may still send a spark signal to a test light or upon cranking, but it may be too weak of a signal to actually ignite your fuel. Effectively your test light has no valuable accuracy testing a coil. Also cranking it over without plug wires on plugs grounded to heads runs the risk of further damage. (DO IT RIGHT)
If your coil has 3 Small terminals you have what is called a SINGLE FIRE COIL. YOU TEST THEM DIFFERENTLY.
Know your stuff throughout a topic of repair before you make a video that misleads the new age DIY folks. Im sick of cleaning up after "Guy on CZcams said do it like this" aka WRONG.
Damn man! Thanks for the good info Brother! I was wondering if it worked on Dirtbikes also? 2011 kawasaki kx100DBF
Could have been a bad wire to coil and not the actual coil
Didn't help me a bit couldn't see what you were doing.some of us aren't geniuses and I'm gonna look for someone who will explain how to test a coil
Refer to your manual. they are NOT all the same.
So both coils where bad ? The bike would of ran being that it is two cylinder just would of ran on one . Unless both coils where bad ?
False n the guy dont know how to put settings. U cant get readings over 2.000 ohm when u expegt to get 10.000 . Make it again and make it right.
Your second test at 01:28 is WRONG! By using your method, it showed my coil AND a brand new coil as "bad".
Yes, I bought a new coil and wasted valuable time because of your incorrect testing method!
I would have been better off blindly buying new parts, one at a time, than referring to this video.
I wonder how many guys threw away perfectly good coils because of this incorrect testing....
A J&P video shows the CORRECT way to do "test 2". (at 20K plug the probes into both coil sockets, one in each)
See time frame 2:00 in this video: czcams.com/video/4-L52R7x8Jo/video.html
nothing worse than bad information videos, how you gonna get a 10k ohms reading on a 2k ohms max setting ? whole bunch of people throwing away good coils now! maybe you should watch your own video before posting it.
Thank you going home to test it now.
