I was a freshman in college when Batmania happened. It was AWESOME! I remember the hype surrounding it, the shirts, the posters, comic books and most especially the TOYS. Batmobile was so cool! Michael Keaton is Batman!

Never forget the Batmania of 1989. I didn't get to see this in the theater unfortunately, but I still had the merchandise. Finally saw it Christmas Eve of 1989 when my dad got my sister & I the VHS of Batman. Watched it who knows how many times in the past 30+ years. Still watch it once or twice a year. This got me into Batman & comic books in general.

I've never seen anything like the mania this had going, maybe Phantom Menace.(too young for original SW)
People don't understand. Box office numbers don't translate.
From the moment that teaser trailer was released a fuse was lit. And it delivered big time.

I’ll never forget 1989 BATMAN I drove from Indiana to Kentucky a 120 mile round trip to see it w my wife and mom ,grandmother we stopped at Toco Bell 🔔 because they were promoting the film w awesome drinking cups I had to hav. But sad to say I don’t hav any of them items from yrs ago but the memories remain. Tim Burton changed the way we look at BATMAN and other superheroes films For yrs to come.

They did actually have Superman figures from the movie, they just weren’t directly marketed that way. Mego’s 12 inch Joe El was made to look like Brando, and the Lex Luthor had a more than passing resemblance to Hackman. Even Superman and Zod looked like Chris Reeve and Terrence Stamp.

I like the kid's impression at the beginning of the video. :) 🦇
I was 4 years old when this came out and was VERY excited.
I was more than ready for a darker Batman and was dying to see this.
It seemed my wish came true.
Unfortunately, I couldn't see this in the theaters, because my mom is/was so uptight.
My dad rented it when she and my sister went on an over night girl scout event (my mom was a GS leader).
My sister was so jealous. :)
My only regrets were that I couldn't enjoy the merch to the fullest and that I had no money (because I was 4), but very grateful that I had
Batman, Joker, karate chop Robin, and the Batmobile. :)
I was on such a high playing with those figures. 🦇
    Thanks for the video

No action figures for the Superman movie you say. Maybe not officially. Mego tried, but a deal wasn't made. They still released their new Superman 12 inch figure with the new head sculpt that looked a lot like Christopher Reeve. And the Lex Luthor 12 inch figure dressed in comic book outfit but with a head sculpt that looked a lot like Gene Jackman. And even a Jor-EL 12 inch figure, comic book clothing and a head sculpt that looked like Marlon Brando.
This could be an CZcams episode by itself.

Man I wish I could’ve been there to experience the hype for this film. The only big event movies I remember from my lifetime were Star Wars Episode 1, Spider-Man (2002), and The Dark Knight (2008). But even with those films I don’t remember it getting so crazy that people started shaving the logos from those films into their hair.

    • @n.d.m.515
      @n.d.m.515 Před 11 měsíci

The truth of the matter is the hype came from a fear it was not going to be any good, and as the video said a trailer dropped that changed everyone's expectations. To this day I remember how awe inspiring it was to see the Batman drop in from above on television advertisements.
The first Star Wars was double as hyped as Batman in comparison. Nothing compared to that at the time or since. People were actually buying cardboard promisary cards in place of SW action figures for Christmas because they sold out.

Mego made 12 inch figures for the 1978 film. They captured Christopher Reeves likeness very well. The Lex Luthor is dressed like a comic but the face looks more like Gene Hackman. And cool sidenote, Toybiz made an 8 inch Mego style Batman figure in 1989 as well.

Great video Junkman. The Batman TV show was technically a parady to Batman cause his character was written dark but a lot of people didn't know this and when Tim Burton released his Batman it was close to the original character but it had to be family friendly. But Adam West was the Batman I grew up watching cause like you said he was the first live action to date but in the 40s there was a Batman and Robin black and white silent movie. Then in the 60's we got Adam West. Great stuff Junkman like always. Thank you for sharing this awesome video and have a great day.

I saw reruns of Batman in 70s and early 80s. Even then I realized the campy version felt absolutely wrong and was not a fan, even if I loved Batman as a character. Perhaps it was because the movie Superman and Superman II gave me different expectations.

My friend and I went down to NYC and spent a week at my older cousin’s house in Queens that summer. We were going to try to go to the offices of Marvel comics and sell our funny comic we had written and drawn “Here’s Ernie”! about a screw up named Ernie Jawolski. Wanted it to be a sort of Groo the wanderer set in modern times. We never got allowed into the floor where the Marvel offices were (being two kids from the country in upstate NY, we were not pushy enough). We did however go all around the city that week, spending a ton of time in Manhattan. Besides seeing a Dude jerking off on Broadway in daylight hours and cops laughing about it across the street, and having people try to sell us switch blades or pimp used up older women (this was before Giuliani cleaned NYC up), we saw a TON of Batman shit. People everywhere wearing Bat logo tees, the logo was up on the big screens in Times Square at night, fast food restaurants had movie tie In promotions, toys on every little shop corner. And it was spread out in all the races and ethnicities, white, black, Asian, Hispanic; everyone was rocking some type of Bat merch.

@That Junkman ''The Joker'' from Kenner's 1990 ''Dark Knight'' line looked a little more like Jack Nicholson, but not much. Actually, in 1978 Mego did release a line of 12inc action figures based on ''Superman the Movie''. The line consisted of the movies four main characters. (Superman, Lex Luthor, Jorel and General Zod). Although the four action figures did facially resemble their movie counterparts. Due to licensing limitations...They were dressed in their comic book based outfits. A 12inc ''Lois Lane'' action figure as well as a ''Fortress of Solitude'' playset were designed for the line...But were never produced.
Over a decade before ''Frank Miller's'', 1986 classic four-issue graphic novel miniseries *The Dark Knight Returns*. It was artist/illustrator ''Neal Adams and writer ''Danny O'Neil'' who would return Batman to his gothic roots as a dark ruthless vigilante. In contrast to the 1960s Batman television series. Which leaned more towards the somewhat bizarre comic book Batman stories of the 1950s. When the ''Caped Crusader'' became an unlikely science fiction star and would be seen battling (Space Aliens and Robots). But what's also very interesting is that even though ''Bob Kane'' came up with the idea for the character. Kane's early vision of Batman included {red tights with no emblem, a domino mask and black Bat Wings}. Kane also originally wanted to depict ''Bruce Wayne'' as a blond and not a brunette. But it was in fact artist (Bill Finger), who worked with Kane at his studio during the late 1930s as sort of a Ghostwriter. Would eventually help create the visual aesthetic that defined the character for all time. That being [The cowl, the cape, and the darker color scheme for the costume]. All of which came from ''Bill Finger''. It was nice to see ''Michael Keaton'' reprise his role as The Dark Knight in the 2023 summer blockbuster "The Flash''.

0:59 @@ThatJunkman Not necessarily! It may not have said it on the box? But there were advertisements for the 12inc line that did have photos of ''Christopher Reeve'' from the movie. I got all that information from my (Mego encyclopedia and toy collectors guide). The book verifies that the 12inc action figure line is in fact, based on ''Superman the Movie'' 1978. The book also makes it clear that do to financial reasons...Mego had to license the 12inc action figures as they were in the comic books more then they were represented in the move. As I had already mentioned that although the four action figures may have facially resembled their movie counterparts. They were decked out in their comic book based outfits because of licensing limitations. ''The Mego Museum'' website clarifies this as well. It's not too surprising that Mego would file for bankruptcy and go under 4 years later. Kind of odd how Mego was still able to do toys lines based on ''Star Trek the Motion Picture'' and ''The Black Hole'' with no harm or foul? Mego also produce 12inc action figure prototypes of the other two Phantom Zone villains (Non and Ursa). In hopes of releasing them in time for the movie ''Superman 2'' 1980. But again...Due to licensing limitations they were never offered. Whatever became of those two prototypes however, is a mystery.
