  • God wants you to be happy. In this two day Focus on the Family broadcast, Jim Daly and John Fuller talk with Ms. Lisa Harper about her book, The Sacrament of Happy (bit.ly/2KL9ef7).
Lisa shares on how being happy is a biblical concept (there are over 2,700 references to happiness in the Bible!). She shares what kept her away from true Biblical happiness and how a panic attack drove her to counseling and eventually a deeper understanding of who God was and what He wanted for her life. She shares that we serve a happy God who is happy with us because of what Jesus Christ did for us on the cross, how we can learn to express happiness in healthy ways, and how it is possible for happiness and sadness to co-exist. Program closes with the reminder of the hope of heaven where and the happily ever after awaiting those who put their trust in Jesus Christ.

I always have looked at "Happy" as being a choice, as the word happy comes from happenstance, which means a circumstance especially that is due to chance. Now, chance or fate or something that happens without regularity is happenstance. BUT, we can MAKE choices that create a feeling of Happiness, it doesn't always have to be so random. The point being, is that happiness in my opinion comes and goes with how we are FEELING at any given moment.
However, unlike happiness, JOY is a permanent state of being, as JOY comes from the Father, through Yeshua Jesus and manifested to us by the Ruach Hakodesh or Holy Spirit. Joy is something we always HAVE in our Spirits because of our CONNECTION to the Father and to EACH OTHER...
My JOY overflows because it comes from the Father of Love and Joy, who created me to be CONNECTED to Himself with ALL JOY...
So for me, I am HAPPY based on what I am FEELING, based on my SENSES, what I perceive around me will make me SAD or Happy or Grumpy or Cheerful, but Happy is of the FLESH and not of the SPIRIT, as Happy is just an INDICATOR of what we are feeling or not feeling. Happiness can be from eating your favorite food or watching your favorite TV show or Movie, or from accomplishing some sort of physical goal. In other words, I DO SOMETHING or RECEIVE something to feel Happiness.
Whereas JOY is a quality or indicator of the Holy Spirit working in and through US. Joy doesnt come and go like things of the flesh but is constant and always present within us.
If we struggle or don't have Joy then its a spiritual problem, we have to look at our Spirit and find out what's going on with our CONNECTION to the Father. Is there SIN or something that is blocking our connection with the Father or with others. We look at our connections when we speak of JOY.
If we are not happy, we look at our senses, we look at the things around us, the stimuli that we are experiencing. Are we in pain physically, are we in pain emotionally, is our mind and heart hurting, what is pressing in to our external senses that is causing sadness or loneliness verses feeling HAPPY.
My JOY emanates from with my SPIRIT and flows out from within me. That JOY will impact my physical, emotional and mental state and will manifest as Happiness through my senses.
I do not have to DO anything to receive JOY or to HAVE Joy in my life, it is a FREE GIFT from the Father through Yeshua Jesus. Joy comes with salvation, Joy comes with the Father's Love for us, Joy increases and flows out of our relationship with the Father and the Son through the Holy Spirit.
Joy means we TRUST and BELIEVE in the Father's Words, we TRUST he is taking care of US no matter what the outside situations may look like. By FAITH we know that the Father has it all under His Control and so JOY SHINES BRIGHTLY through us and lifts us up and encourages our Spirit in times when we may not FEEL Happy.
