I have been using that button in the hole on the back of the PlayStation controllers since PS3 first came out! It was always the best way to shut down the controller right now, rather than waiting for it to time out, and shut it self down. PS1 and PS2 didn't have that problem, because they weren't wireless. And I still use a PS3 controller today, for gaming on my PC, using Scp Toolkit. And still shut it down, rather than wasting time and battery power.
