    Hey everyone! Today we're taking a look at the Sire M2... well two of em! We're comparing the 1st and 2nd Gen Sire M2 models to find out the similarities (there are many) and differences. Let's do this!
    This bass and all my other basses with rounds are strung with MJC Ironworks Nickel Plated Stainless Steel 45-105(125) unless otherwise noted. Check them out at www.mjcironworks.com

    I'm really excited for the Sire P5 in mild green. Fairly hard to find a 5 string P bass with the build quality sire has without spending quite a bit of $. It'd be really cool if you could do a review of that one once it's released.

    Those M2s definitely have a fat sound to them. I have actually considered a five string version recently as there’s a huge backorder on the M5 and M7 versions. For now, I’ll keep enjoying my M7 Gen 2.
    I’d get a Gen 2 M2 5 String in that teal if I could. Great review as always!

    On looks alone, the Gen 1 (I realise they probably come in different colors). However, the sound of the Gen 2 seems so much fuller.

  • @innocentoctave
    @innocentoctave Před 2 lety +3

    A great comparison, as usual. The Gen 2 sounded as though it had more output - though this may be just a bias towards the lower frequencies. It's hard to account for this if the pickups are identical, the vol & tone settings are the same, and the outboard gear settings are constant. I wouldn't expect the fretboard wood to make such a noticeable difference. Perhaps the preamp has been tweaked a little?
    On a different note, i was struck by how different the saddle positions are on two basses that have the same scale length and the same type of new strings. It's not a subtle difference.

    • @LowEndLobster

      Thanks Paul! I believe I intonated the Gen 2 (did a lot more to it - EMG swap) but didn't touch the bridge on the Gen 1. They sounded close enough on video, but I am not going to claim that the Gen 1 is intonated to its fullest potential heh

    Hey lobster I’m trying to get an m2 from guitar center but based on the pics I just found out that the one they’re selling is a gen 1 , is the rolled fretboard such a big difference in comfort bcuz if so then I’d have to get a gen 2 from sire directly

  • @michaelkeefer4293
    @michaelkeefer4293 Před 2 lety +4

    I'm guessing the gen 1 has a bit more "zing" because of the maple fret board. Based on the extra zing and the looks I'd probably lean towards the gen 1 compared to your gen 2 example, unless the rolled fret edges make a significant difference in comfort. Buying new I'd probably try to find a gen 2 with a similar finish and maple board.

    • @flipdry

    Hey Lobster, would you Consider comparing one of your Stingray HHs with one of your Bongo HHs? I'm considering selling my Stingray 5 HH and Spector Euro LX 5 to fund a BFR Bongo, either the mahogany one or the new white and gold one, you make some of the best in depth comparison vids and I have yet to find a video comparing these two basses. I've only ever held a bongo but never played one plugged in.

    Another cool video. However, you mentioned that they have identical pickups, preamps, knobs, pots, tuners, nut, bridge, fret material, but don't identify what they are. I'm assuming that you go through all the part and component specs in a different video, but it would be useful information here, definitely.

    The Gen1 tone seems more refined. Gen2 more throaty. Both would work for me although I’d give the edge to the Gen1. Just my personal preference. And I like the trans teal more than “metal” black.

    Most of my basses are J and P basses I'd like to get a designated Slapper (trainer bass, I am to slap as you are to pick 😊).

  • @russellzauner
    @russellzauner Před 2 lety

    it's nice when they give you a 35" scale on a 5.
    Every instrument with a battery needs the airplane ashtrays on the back ;-)
    I need to build a rechargeable battery module that slaps into the same route as those battery boxes but it also comes with a stand or attachment for the stand that keeps your bass charged up when its not in use. :-)

    • @russellzauner
      @russellzauner Před 2 lety

      all I noticed could easily be accounted for by finger tone and manufacturing variations.
      Good basses, good prices, you said before you've been talking with Kyle Kim, start up conversations with people like Lollar or Gallen-Kruger, there are a lot of people (I didn't know there was even a GK family of humans) still creating products and new content. I bet Trev Wilkinson would chat with you too, and if you mention that several people on your channel have been complaining that you haven't demo'd the geddy and jaco models of Vintage maybe he'll at least send a couple loaners/demo models over.
      People really like seeing the people behind the innovations and hearing the stories of how stuff came to be.
      On a moderately unrelated note - I snagged some Mitchell TB500 pickups off Reverb for 50 bucks, a whole PJ set with fatty pole pieces. :-)
      Along with the white gold nylon tapes, that Unity is going to fucken tear shit up. I can feel it. Those pickups are kind of heavy for your average PJ set, or seemingly so, and it's a passive bass so the heft and girth matters, might need some cap tweaks but meh I need to get a feel for that anyhow.
      I'll have to start weighing things I guess. I also have a feeling those tapes are going to be indestructible, and I'm kind of a shithole to my gear most of the time so we'll see about that...there are people who have nylon labella tapes that are ancient and still sound badass with zero corrosion. I can see someone leaving those on until they break - as long as they don't oxidize, the tone should be stable because metal just doesn't wear out that fast on its own.
      We'll see how they hold up to a 1.5mm tortex gator grip pick. I'm kind of nervous about that but honestly?
      They're not expensive. No, really. I hope they work though. I like using parts that remove variability from operation and effort from maintenance.

  • @18hot30
    @18hot30 Před 2 lety +2

    Hmmmm, on my speakers the black bass has a much more pronounced and growly b string while the teal one, maybe due to older strings doesn't seem to have that bite.
    though the teal bass's strings seem much more balanced as in string volume, they all sound much more even than on the black bass, I would still go for the growlier one. not sure how that fits pop ballads but hey, some like blondes some black haired ") nice comparison as usual man

    • @LowEndLobster
      @LowEndLobster  Před 2 lety +1

      Thank you! Strings are actually both new in this video. This was filmed before I gutted the black bass and installed the EMGs. It's interesting how the overall voice is almost the same, but there's some slight differences in how specific frequency ranges are voices in the different basses
