Thank you so much for this. Definitely eased my mind. I've been beating myself up for not doing our curriculum books. We learn daily through life. And noone learns when they feel awful... including Mom. Thank you for helping me find some peace in what I am doing. I am enough. My kids are enough. What we are doing is enough.
Perfect! I'm so glad our paths crossed! You ARE all enough. ♥︎
I was ready to shed the shackles when I was still in school. Lol
So was I!!!!!
So glad I watched this, I've been doubting myself and hadn't yet taken mine out of school even though they are miserable, time to bite the bullet and do what I know is best for us. Thank you.
Oh! I'm so glad it was helpful! I keep planning to come back and do more videos. Reach out - I have a lot of resources to help people just starting on this unschooling path!!
Thank you so much for this!! We received our Homeschool ID from the state and just unenrolled our 5 children from PS last week and we all have been absolutely loving our first week of deschooling!!! The kids and us as parents absolutely feel and function better now that we are not forced to get up every morning at 6am for PS and that we have so much more freedom to what, when, where and how we learn! We will be spending the day on the beach Wednesday next week for our twins birthday. If they were still in PS we would have been restricted to celebrating on the weekend and not on their actual birthday. They are super excited!!!!! Anyone considering unschooling PLEASE give it a try. It opens your eyes and minds to a whole NATURAL way of learning, loving and living!
How was your first year? Have you been finding what you needed?
2:43 is so true. I’m much more careful when I buy school supplies now because if I buy something that’s not the right fit it feels like a heavy burden pressing over me that I now have to figure out how to use because I’ve invested so much in it even when it’s not good for our family. It’s very very true to be careful what you spend your money on because it can end up derailing you.
I've been homeschooling for nearly 5 years but I'm just now diving into unschooling. This video is so spot on!
Oh I’m so glad it helped!!! Reach out if you have questions and I can point you toward other videos or resources!
I know this comment is from quite a ways back - I’m curious how things have gone since then!
I watched this video again and it gave me a much needed boost of confidence. We have moved and we thought this move would open up lots of opportunities and relationships for our kids. It has done that in some ways, but we have had a hard time finding where we fit here. Most of the homeschoolers around us are definitely not unschoolers and they also seem to be homeschooling for very different reasons than us. This makes it hard to feel comfortable going to group activities and making connections. A couple of our kids tried out public school and that was a nightmare. I did think they would like it and we talked about all the negative and positive potential situations that could occur.
I decided to go back to school myself to finish up a bachelor's degree I started nearly 2 decades ago. I had planned to only take a class or two but then I received a good scholarship that required me to take at least 12 credits. So, I have had a lot of guilt about being so busy and gone so much while trying to homeschool. 😕 I've decided I will finish up the full course load mid summer and then only do 1 or 2 classes for a while.
My biggest challenge is the worry about technology. It's so hard to find ways to help everyone have a healthy relationship with phones, videogames, CZcams etc. Because I'm so busy my kids use those things even more. I just don't have the energy and brain space to think up lots of amazing learning opportunities but then they say they're on their phones because they have nothing else to do. It's been hard.
Absolutely brilliant. I am unbelievably happy to have come across your video! 🤗
Thank you for this! Perfect timing. Brought such relif to me!
Good stuff! My kids have never been to school, but I hear about these concerns from curious parents all the time. I like your take on deschooling, in particular. It’s often talked about at Not Back To School Picnics, where families new to unschooling are desperate to “do it right.” There’s always a circle of veteran unschooling mamas patting their backs and reassuring them, like you are here. Great resource!
Yes, you're right. We just have to spread the word that opting for something different is OK! Thank you so much for leaving such a great comment. It will help a lot of people.
First year homeschooling and replicating the school system isn't working for us. You are a saving grace for my peace of mind!
I’m so glad we’re connected now. It takes a while to see there are other options - but there are!!! 💖
So helpful, thank you for sharing!💕
Thank you for this!
It's generally things most humans would connect with, and spark a light of hope within...yet the fear, and constant feeling of inadequacy of parents tends to snuff out the great points you mentioned here. "You do..but you don't.." I'm grateful for the Homeschooling range of methods..
Awesome Video Thank you !!!!!!!!! You’re Absolutely right 😀
Thanks for the insight 👍
Thank you for soothing my worries. ❤️
Great advice, thank you
This is great! Thank you!
GREAT video Sue. I needed this TODAYYYYYY!!!! Thanks.

Great video!
Your video was so comforting as I dive into unschooling!💕
I been homeschooling unschooling since “virtual yr” 2020😊💡❤️🙏🏽NYC
Yay! That was a lot of people’s “start date!”
What a great video! Thank you for your insights! I love your train of thought on all of this! :) This is our first year of homeschool which quickly turned from workbooks to unschooling. We have learned so much more through unschooling than anything. Love it! Your #8 recommendation threw me off..... is it supposed to say "DO TAKE time to deschool" ? I have found it quite important to teach my kids how they are learning all the time, not just when we sit down to 'do school'. :) thanks again.
So happy I found your channel, you explain things so well....I feel in my heart, that this is the path I need to take with my kids, my son who is now in "grade 3" is so stressed out with school and has ADHD I believe, he's smart and is motivated to learn but gets easily overwhelmed when I open up workbooks...I want learning to be fun and not stressful at all, I'm excited to start the unschooling journey
I’m excited for both of you! He doesn’t need to learn through workbooks! Be sure to watch some of the other videos - they’ll help you reframe how you approach learning with him! All the best to you two!! 💖
I needed this very message this morning. Thank you 😊
Hi Sue. I would just like to say thank you for making this video for new homeschoolers. I just saw your video in the feed of YT. I homeschooled both of my kids K-12 from 2002-2017. It was a long journey. No regrets. Both myself and my kids say they were blessed to have had the life learning experiences of homeschooling. I found it quite a struggle early on because I didn't know where to get curriculum and just guidance. So it's great to see people like you putting info out there for new parents.
Thanks so much for saying this. It’s been such a pleasure to be able to help people see that this alternative actual works AND can change everything!!! ❤️
I am def guilty of #3! I am an unschooling mom to FOUR boys, including identical twins and I have to work to keep the comparisons at bay since my boys are all so close in age. Thank you for this reminder
You can do it! Feel free to reach out if you need a little support!
Best Video Ever! I’m so much more less stressed. Thank you and Bless your heart for sharing

THanks for the kind words - and for sharing that!
Thank you!
You're welcome!!
A great piece of wisdom. Thank you so much for enlightening the parents who are really thinking of unschooling their noble offsprings.
Thanks for leaving a comment - glad it offered a little reassurance!
YES
Thank you! I unschool for 5yrs now and I need reminding everything you said.
Thanks for leaving a comment! I think we all need reassurance along the way!!! Reach out if you need more connection with other unschooling families.

I love point 2.
I am so guilty of 5 and 6. I definitely still need to deschool.

Thank you so much for this video

I love this video! Very informative and you took all the words out of my mouth about school. I wish I was unschooled
I wish I had been too! But... now we have this awesome opportunity with our own kids!
#3 hit home 💔💔💔
Un vídeo para volver a escuchar.... Mil gracias!! En mi caso, "mucho análisis conduce a la parálisis"

@@Mamaenelhogar Hurra! yay!
I think I'm going through deschooling myself right now. I have 7 children, 5 "school age", and we've always homeschooled, but I was not homeschooled. So we're figuring it out and I've really started moving away from all the schedules and curriculum and thinking we need to check all the boxes that the public schools allegedly do.
I get it. We have so much pressure to duplicate the familiar approach to learning - even when it's not the only way or even the best way! After our own ~12 years of conditioning - and then adding on all the messages we get through society - no wonder this is so difficult! If you need more support, the private membership group is full of parents walking this path and finding their own unique way! As a CZcams watcher, you can join without the sign up fee. Let me know if you need the link!
Great content, thank you! I'm listening to your videos on 1.5 speed so I can listen to as much as possible 😹
I'm from Texas and I talk kind of slow sometimes! I'm glad you can speed me up! Hope you're doing well!
Its all about learning and mistakes arent bad to make. This is againputting something in a box and appriaching things exactly the same way . Learning is learning notbing is wrong or right ! Period
Most of my learning came from Sesame Street.🌳
watching from here in Nassau! Did you realize you cover slide/color theme look a lot like the Bahamian flag? :-D
I didn't! Now I'm going to go look that up!! I've been to the Bahamas and loved it!! (long ago!)
My plan was to travel and go to museums and that was going to be my form of learning for my kids financially its hard my husband has a spinal cord injury and is waiting on disability i work farmers market seasonally so money is tight i think i just need to make better plans
It’s really all about experimenting with our ideas. What doesn’t work now may work later on. Or it frees up the mental capacity to explore other options. I have a 365 Days of Deschooling Guide that might help you. Let me know if you want the link.
#5🤦♀️
How do you satisfy your state homeschooling standards while unschooling?
We follow the same laws as homeschoolers - it varies by state. Here's more about this: www.unschoolingmom2mom.com/is-unschooling-legal/
When you deschool a little more, you'll see that topics/subjects weave throughout all sorts of activities. The more you look for it, the more you'll see it. The School Way of learning isn't the only way. :)

I’m interested but still hung up on a high school diploma. How do they get into college or attain a job without a diploma. What career options are Available to them as adults
Because homeschooling/unschooling is a legal option in all 50 states (I'm assuming you're in the USA), the parents issue the diploma when the teen is done. They also create the transcripts that might be needed for access to higher learning at trade schools, community colleges, and universities. If they're going straight to a career, they usually don't ask for transcripts. Occasionally they want to see a diploma. Usually, it's just checking a box, "Did you graduate? If so, when?"
Here's some more info on this:

Hi. I am a little bit confused with mistake #8. Are you saying don't take the time to break free of the ideas we learned in traditional schooling and let that happen naturally, or do take that time?
Sorry that was confusing! I think the MISTAKE is that people don't allow enough time for deschooling. They want it to be done in a week. The conditioning that happens from all those years in school, can pop up at all different times throughout this parenting adventure!. Deschooling is a real thing that we have to work on. Thanks for asking!
What about starting in 11th grade😕
We are an unschooling family but know we need more structure/predictable rythm for the day. I have a 6 and 3 year old. I do not want to do curriculum but not sure how to have more structure. What would you recommend?
You can schedule as much as you want to and still unschool. Join some local park meet ups. Go to museums, zoos, etc. Daily regular routine and then weekly scheduled outings will probably help you feel like you're doing things and learning right along with your kids also. Hopefully that gives you a sense of order and productivity so you don't feel like you're just sitting around not doing anything.
Casey, I created a free PDF that you might want to see. Especially since things are so different these days. Here's the link:

@@some_sun8502 It's so familiar to try to duplicate school - you're not alone! Be sure to hop over the website for more resources and inspiration: www.SuePatterson.com and www.UnschoolingMom2Mom.com Reach out if you need help!
@@UnschoolingMom2Mom the pdf isn’t working anymore, is there another link?
Can't I get in trouble with the state if you don't have your kids in school?
No. Homeschooling is legal in all 50 states. Every state has different rules though. You'd want to know what's required where you live. But once you do that, unschooling is simply a method/style of homeschooling. So it's legal!
I love the idea of unschooling. Portfolio for the state is what I worry about. Can you help me with this fear?
I'm in PA and we have to do portfolios. If you can find an evaluator who is unschooling friendly. What we do with portfolios is just put some busy work in it. We print off worksheets and I have my son write about some of the things he's learned from a project he was working on in a Word document put that in the portfolio. What state are you in? Hopefully, there are some unschoolers in your state who can connect with and help you.
Sorry I didn't see this - yes! And the April Monthly Unschooling Guide was ALL about recordkeeping, testing and portfolios! You can subscribe at Patreon to get it (for only $5) - if you have a hard time finding it, message me! Or, we can hop on the phone and I can walk you through it! www.suepatterson.com/make-an-appointment Either way - it's doable!!!
@@MelissaGrimes9371 I live in Pa. We. have been relaxed homeschooling family. The evaluator I have now wants me to get more serious with my daughters education because she is entering middle school age. I don't know how to find evaluator who would share same thoughts of unschooling .
@@MelissaGrimes9371 I live in Pa too. Is there a list online of evaluators that support unschoolers?
@@lizsmith330 Well now that schools are half day and social distancing wouldn't unschooling be a huge thing?

Is unschooling possible in California?
Absolutely! You have several options, but many fill out the annual PSA form... and then that's it.
I’m a sucker for every pdf curriculum sale out there. I need to stop.
I hear ya! They know how to play on our fears! Learn more about unschooling, and you could divert those funds to trips, season passes, cool supplies, etc.!
Good luck getting your child in to university 🤣
Actually, my oldest just completed his MBA! They’re all grown now (27, 30, and 32) and none of them had any trouble getting into any college or school they wanted. They have degrees, families, own homes - all the typical young adult things!
