We 'unschool' our five year old, and while I've realized that he might not know (to the same capacity) the things that other kids in schools do given their current grade; he is an absolute genius on a lot of subjects. His vocabulary is huge, and he's like a Lego savant. We are trying our best to make 'learning continuous', realizing that any time, any place provides an opportunity for him to learn.
He wants to learn about scuba diving, we get some books on it and watch the occasional video; learning about marine biology in the process. He is a homebody, but won't hesitate to go to the pool to play scuba. Every person I've talked to (they always have kids in school) has told me that he's going to be way smarter than everyone else. At this point, I'm not changing anything. Thanks for this video.

I am thinking of unschooling my son with autism with pda profile. It is time for a change.

You can do this! Unschooling makes the most sense for neurodivergent kids! Meeting them where they are instead of trying the shove them into some curriculum. Let me know if you need more resources to help. I have tons to make your life easier and give you more support.💜

I feel like I had a rhythm and now I’m trying to figure out how he learns best and I know I need to Deschool myself -I do know he loves to build and he loves to create so I actually am finding some cool opportunities for him to take part in that and it’s cool to see him flourish what I struggle with is he’s an only child and different things at home he wants to do screen time. I do try to limit it and I liked what you said on the podcast about if he wants to do Minecraft for long periods of time plan it on a certain day so I feel like we have done a lot of good things and he’s learned so much but I sort of feel like I do struggle because I’ve been one of those traditional public and Christian school people that is now trying to do something different
I am proud of myself, but it’s sometimes difficult to get past certain things that I grew up learning
I’m trying to figure out if I can financially join the membership in 2024 I think it would really help me

It helps to think of everything as Experiments. Try something for a week and see if it works. Then gather up all the data to make another decision for the next week. I agree that the membership group would be a great option - lots of parents in there with similar scenarios. If you end up not joining you may want to grab the Unschooling Guide about Technology - it would help. (It’s included in the membership - plus more resources related to screentime.)
