I can’t believe you missed DA2! That’s my favorite entry! It has a great story that unfolds over a decade of your character’s life where the characters and environment changes. It’s also one of the few games where the main quest isn’t another “save the world” type plot. You should check it out!
This game is free on Epic right now.
The pacing issues in this game make a lot more sense when you consider that this game began life as an Awakenings style DLC for DA2, so it had to be reworked for a character that didn't have the same history with these characters and factions as Hawke (DA2 protagonist) when the decided to turn it into a stand alone title with a new protagonist. (This is actually referenced in game, when Cassandra tells Varrik she was perusing Hawke with the intention of making them the Inquisitor).
The side quests are an issue, although I have seen a few retrospectives say that the delays caused by trying to get the Frostbite engine to work with an RPG playstyle left the quest designers little time to actually create and test quests before the release.
Overall I think it is a flawed game, but I at least give them credit for mostly making different mistakes than they did in DA2
Doing a second playthrough currently after I said I was one and done. You're exactly right, your first time you've gotta just blast through it and finish it for the sweet pay off.
Then, on future playthroughs you have all the background knowledge and can focus on all the essential stuff while cutting out the bloat
Can someone answer this question for me. Do you have to play the first two dragon age games to understand what’s going on in dragon age inquisition?
I think the first game is very focused, with you being a grey warden taking care of the blight and being land locked in Ferelden. And 2 expands and presents some of the concepts better. The very end of 2 is somewhat important, but its also basically shown on the main menu of inquisition. The is no Blight and it's not set in Kirkwall, so you more or less don't actually need to know anything. There are returning characters, but they know just as little about you. At the end of the day there is a codex, so if you like to read, you shouldn't be overwhelmed. Just set up a world state on Dragon Age Keep and you can get a quick summary of the events.
Have this on PlayStation, just couldn't get into it so badly wanted too tired twice just couldn't 😢 get it into it loved the first one too, wish i knew why.
The timing of this video and the game free in epic its just really impressive, you can't do this in one night xd
yeah pretty wild timing lol
I figured this was a response to the game being free on epic, so im pleased with how surprisingly thorough it ended up being. I do recommend sticking it out a lil further, there's some real good moments in the 2nd act (the big political get together, there's like 12 ways it can end up going)
What do you mean by 2024 writing? Just like, laziness?
edit: also i dont think WD appeals to just guys. Its just a surprisingly solid narrative, esp if you go the more violent/dark route. That one cutscene with your kid after one of the missions... it still pops into my head when i think about the game, and i played it at release
Regarding '2024 writing'
There is a intercept point, where writing in high profile games went from 'in house game dev/coders stepping up to write' (which resulted in average but earnest writing and plots), to an influx of 'professional writers'; basically sub-par B rate writers-as-a-profession coming into gaming as a writer first and a gamer...second? or not at all even.
THIS is what I mean by 2024 writing; the entire 'writing profession' has been co-opted by opportunists looking for a vector/stepping stone onto bigger and better (Hollywood etc) and it shows. Writing should go back to its roots, a secondary consideration done as a side project by a passionate tech that works on the tools; a gamer first, and writer as required.
I liked Inquisition, it doesn't do well on wide screen. Have a great day Scarlet.
Damn I have ultrawide and I played this game at release , dropped it and was wanting to try again
The characters will grow on you.
You nailed it. Game is great but your insertion into the world is so abrupt, it’s hard to get in the role…and the endless fetch quests to get you to the next story mission is unfortunate. But somehow, I still love the game🤷♂️ Solid review Scarlet; looking forward to playing watchdogs with ya…
Wonderful.👍
