Abandoned Slate Quarry And Village Dorothea, North Wales.

Dorothea Quarry was one of the main quarries in the area by the late 1800s and produced approx 17,000 tons of slate at it’s peak. By the 1930s there were 350 men working at Dorothea. However due to the Second World War production dropped and the quarry never fully recovered. The quarry was closed in 1970. Once the quarry was closed the pumps were switched off and thus the quarry flooded leaving the fascinating landscape we see today.

That looks amazing. Why such a beautiful site of industrial history has not been restored or at least preserved in a better state is beyond me. Definitely on my must-visit list. lovely video.
There's places like this scattered all over Wales, it's quite incredible to think of the amount of mass industry that was going on back then and that they just walked away from it all.. We're back in North Wales next month in the hope of exploring more places like this 😀
Thats a cool spot. I like the construction of the buildings. Everything looks super sturdy and its still in really good shape. The camera work was awesome in this one.
It's surprising considering most of the buildings are just bits of slate piled up without any mortar that they are still standing so well.. Lovely place, been a couple of times with a mate that lived in the area, he passed away in January sadly and had all sorts of knowledge regarding the slate industry. Those “steam pumps” at 6:00 are actually the boilers that provided the engine house with steam, the big beam engine was used to pump water via a big pump (like a massive plunger in a tube, powered by the back and forth motion of the beam engine) and kept the workings clear. The lakes you see now, actually used to be deep pits where they extracted the slate and I believe the local diving club now uses them, they’re incredibly deep. It looks like a lot of the old engine house has collapsed since my last visit about 9 years ago. The second building you visited Is, I believe, the tank room that fed the boilers with water, the tanks obviously long since removed. If you do another visit, head past the engine house to the woods at the back, there are the ruins of Talysarn Hall, which is very interesting, with the ruins of a small stone chapel being engulfed into the trees and ivy, if you know where to look there are also the remains of ornamental gardens for the hall and an old ornamental fountain close by. Well worth a future visit.

We just had so many places to visit that week that we had to keep our research quite basic this time unfortunately.. I'm intrigued to look for those gardens now! 😁
