A group of more than 60 journalism professors has written to The New York Times calling on the paper to commission an independent review of its report that members of Hamas committed widespread sexual violence on October 7. Numerous media outlets, as well as some of the paper’s own staff, have raised questions about the December 28 article headlined “Screams Without Words,” reported in part by a freelance Israeli journalist who had liked multiple posts on social media advocating for violence against Palestinians. The Times has even published subsequent reporting undercutting some of the key elements of the article, which was used by Israeli leaders and Western allies as justification for the brutal military campaign in Gaza that had already killed tens of thousands of Palestinians up to that point. “It was very troubling to professors of journalism to see such a shoddy article be published without a retraction or an investigation,” says Rutgers media studies professor Deepa Kumar, one of the signatories, author of Islamophobia and the Politics of Empire. She also says that as an academic, she is troubled by the mainstream media’s depiction of student encampments as places of hate and violence. “For those of us who have been to these encampments, we know that the atmosphere there is peaceful until the police show up and start to create chaos. … These are fantastic spaces of learning.”

Many people use that story as justification for any and all violence against Palestinian civilians. The New York Times, once again, is complicit in genocide. This demand from 60 journalists is good news. It should be considered a crime to make defamatory accusations against one person or worse, an entire organization or even a peoples. Falsely accused people can face imprisonment, lynching in the old times and racist discrimination as a group. Also, the New York Times stands for high standards in journalism. If this news outlet refuses to set the record straight in what concerns this extremely damaging article to the Palestinians this would compromise their credibility in a lasting manner. I wonder how many subscribers they’ve lost because of this one article and how many more they will lose if they can’t deliver unbiased reporting from now on.

Thank you for this analysis. Arresting people for "resisting arrest" works much the way that "stand your ground" laws function. The "policing"--or self-appointed "policing"--person provokes the "target.'" Then, the "policing" person claims to be the target of resistance, or even assault. Trayvon Martin was provoked and then resisted harassment. This resistance became the basis for his murderer to walk free. With police, a peaceful encampment is quickly turned into a "mass resistance of arrest" event by the provocation of the police. Having college presidents play a role in this is despicable. This is also similar to the role of the "picadors" in Spanish bullfighting. Provoking a non-attacking bull to resist harassment and become "the attacker" or the "resistor" justifies their public defeat in the eyes of society. Freedom of speech and assembly on the grounds of an educational institution--in the cause of ending war and the death of civilians--should have the highest bar before "inciting arrest." This bar has not been met. Feeling "uncomfortable" is not even on the scale.

There are absolute clear cut criteria that define the professional standards of practices and ethical cods of conduct that underpin professional journalism. I am glad that professors of journalism are FINALLY calling for investigation of what certainly seems a gross violation of these criteria not only by a) the Israeli women who wrote the false allegations of rape for her own personal gain, but also by b) the editors and owners of the various news outlets that published versions of the fabrications.
Integrity and Upholding the truth in a systematic and unbiased manner are core - these standards are essential and expected universal principles shared across professions. They prevent charlatans from doing harm.
Looking forward to an unbiased investigation followed by charges of professional malpractice by those involved. This constant brazen abuse of the truth must stop

I don't read or subscribe to the NYT, but for years I've opposed those who criticize it for being "biased." It has been known to be legitimate media as opposed to alt-right media devoted to Republican propaganda. And when the NYT made a mistake, or published false stories, they would make a correction and fire those responsible, respectively, while alt-right media does not.
It's really sad that things have changed with regard to reporting on Israel and Gaza. Apparently, the Israeli lobby has considerable influence over the editors and publisher of the NYT (and college presidents, too).
So many don't see that the Netanyahu regime is part of the worldwide, far-right movement that elected authoritarians (Russia, Belarus, Hungary, India, Brazil, Philippines, Trump in the U.S. and possibly Brexiters in the U.K.) who stand for male dominance, are of the majority ethnicity, religion and straight, and want to put minorities, women and LGBTQ in their place.
