A hearing from the safety board said that the derailment was caused by a loss of situational awareness, and the driver of the train said he recalled that something hit his windshield that may be thrown up by an oncoming commuter train.
Initially he was charged two times for all 8 manslaughter counts, and the safety board said that all of this could’ve been prevented had a PTC system been in place to force the train to slow down. As of recent, the driver was acquitted on all counts.

She’s such an optimistic and positive person, it’s contagious. I’ve suffered an injury, and it does affect you emotional. It’s changed me forever, but I am grateful for what I still have. My accident was a joke compared to hers, just a broken leg with complications, but that was enough for me. I wish her ongoing contributions healing and happiness.

You're one amazing lady, with resilience I've seldom seen. I await many surgeries due to my body caving in on itself from osteoarthritis. My clinic nurse suspects I have osteoarthritis too, so I'm awaiting blood test results. Until tonight I was convinced that I'm one of the few pain riddled people in earth, but I have changed my mind in a big way now - thanks to watching your story! Geralyn, you're my muse - thank you for your honest recounting of your painful situation and miraculous survival. All the best to you for your total healing. May you be miraculously touched and healed by our Lord. Love from Mossel Bay in South Africa 🇿🇦 xxx

So this actually happened in 2015 and the train conductor Brandon Bostian was found not guilty at his trial for manslaughter. He hadn't frequented that track so he was unfamiliar and he lost situational awareness they said. they said it was an accident because right before the curve he was getting radio reports of someone shooting bullets or rocks being thrown at the trains and he thought he had already passed the curve. As soon as the curve is over the speed goes up to 110 mph so he thought his speed was ok. Amtrak was found liable and had to pay millions out to the victims and their families because they didn't have any safety protocals that could have warned him about where he was and what not. After the accident they did install more indicators and things to help keep the conductors aware of surroundings. This was in 2015 so im sure things have even changed since then.
