    I do think that this looks way better in person rather than on video. In the right setting this would look great, but it's not for the average house I don't think. Charge? I'd have thought £350 - £400 Labour & Materials. Great video as always! thanks for showing us this.

    I would happily do that wall for £150 and walk away smiling 😊 normally I charge £180 - £220 a day depending on who the client is and what job it is, but I don’t just do decorating so that also plays a factor in my day rate.
    Great video as always! 😊

    Nicely done and easy to understand the process. I am going to do this process using stencils to apply the gold leaf as accents on a sueded paint faux finish wall. Thanks for all the great tips.

      Try to get better quality gold on a sheet that's a bit more sticky on the sheet. Mine wafted about too much so you go creases... Saying that, I like that effect

    Thank you so much for this. I was moved to paint my boat ceiling gold after my partner died last week and the buttercups bloomed. I painted my ceilings Farrow & ball Babouche mixed with gold gaouche BEFORE I watched your video. Next weekend I’m going to gold leaf but am also thinking maybe copper and also don’t want it ‘tacky’ gold but need it bright as my walls are Hague blue. I prefer copper but am worried it might be too dark. What do you think? X

      Gold does look good.
      Try the antique gold.
      Remember.. don't do what I did... Doing a light sand over the varnish. :(

    How do you get rid of all the square grid lines?

    • @ProfessionalPainterDecorator
      @ProfessionalPainterDecorator  Před měsícem

      you won't, as they are placed on in squares. its the effect i wanted, or you may as well paint the wall gold and put high gloss varnish on it.

    Great video, really keen to try this technique in a small wall in our en-suite, would the clear coat you used be good in high moisture area? Or is there a more suitable clear coat for that sort of area?
    Top man!!

    Did similar on furniture just used PVA to stick & fine, only needs to be tacky, cheaper too 👍i never lacquered after as being metallic it won't penetrate & i think you do lose that natural gold leaf finish imo

    • @ProfessionalPainterDecorator
      @ProfessionalPainterDecorator  Před 9 měsíci

      The open time for PVA isn't long enough for working large areas.
      Yeah, you don't need to lacquer it.

    Looks like it needed burnishing after brushing the gold leaf……..as I remember gold leaf came in two ways one similar to what you used and you would float it on with a brush, the other where the gold leaf was adhered to its backing sheet so the leaf would not fall off when applying to the surface, this style you would then rub the leaf with your thumb onto the applied tacky glue.

    Hard to know what you should charge. If you spent 3 hours painting or papering in the same room what would you charge for that, then perhaps add a premium if this is a skill that’s hard to come by. £1000 seems high for a half day but then I wouldn’t expect anyone to even turn up for £100

    Your patches are sore thumbs. For the flat look, the GL application was applied badly, uneven, wrinkled, and slapdash, which created the patching in the first place. This is because you didn't use the correct tools and have little experience applying gold sheets for a flat look! You should not be able to see the square outline or wrinkles in the sheet! Have you tried the broken look GL application? Its far more forgiving and a much more expensive look. Practise makes perfect. No offence, just constructive criticism :)

    • @ProfessionalPainterDecorator
      @ProfessionalPainterDecorator  Před 10 měsíci

      tnx, the GL was cheap, came off the sheet too easy and didn't go on in one. what gold leaf do you recommend using next time?

    • @StellaPhotis
      @StellaPhotis Před 10 měsíci +1

      @@ProfessionalPainterDecorator I think all the non real gold leafs are pretty much the same and it takes a lot of practise to get it right and helps if you use the right tools. I use a squirrel hair gilders tip brush to apply the leaf which is much better than using the paper sheets. The sheets are only used to divide the leaf. With the gilders tip, you get better application/precision and brush the leaf flat at the same time. The squirrel hair is so soft and doesn't mark or split the leaf... Once in place I use the gilders mop brush to iron out the leaf. These are the right tools for the trade but a bit pricey! However, you can factor the costs into your fees ;)

    • @ProfessionalPainterDecorator
      @ProfessionalPainterDecorator  Před 10 měsíci +1

      @@StellaPhotis would you use those to do a wall or ceiling?
      Small areas, picture frames and furniture they're Ideal. Big areas maybe no so.

    • @StellaPhotis
      @StellaPhotis Před 9 měsíci +2

      @@ProfessionalPainterDecorator Use then for everything, big or small and keep practising. You will be slow to start but as you improve, so will your application and finishing off. I use the Pebeo Deco Gilding Paste on walls/items, but whatever you use let it dry clear. To adhere the fineness of a gold leaf this is the perfect base consistency to adhere to. Do not adhere while it's wet/milky in colour! It will just stretch leaf and rub off in patches spoiling the finish. That said, having broken bits of leaf creates a great antiquing effect especially if the base colour showing through is black!! Practise on everything you can get your hands on, pic frames, old vases, scrap wood/plastic, glass, ceramic, walls, coving etc... and create a portfolio of your work with snipets of the finishes. Let me know how you get on. Fee wise, when you start out, I would base my fee on an hourly rate (£40-£55p/h) to include costs, expenses. Hope this has helped you and I wish you the best of luck ;)
