I would expect UK immigration rules closely follow those of the US when it comes to foodstuffs. I’ve seen plenty of TV Heathrow customs documentaries going through bags when foodstuffs are suspected, and basically it all goes straight into the incinerator. Australia is i believe even stricter as they are protecting against non native species contamination

Most of the West African markets in different parts of USA especially the East Coast and Midwest import all the basic food items used to prepare traditional meals so I see no major sense to stress.

Well, it is more cheaper back home, than purchasing it in the US. Sometimes the price is 3 times more than what u can get it in nigeria. And most times not many people have something to bring back. So they would rather buy food items.

As usual I thank you for the insightful info on categories of food items to take along while traveling by air.
Im frequent traveler and my experience so far has been awesome at border points. The most important thing is packaging.
I always ensure my food items which are not prohibited, are dried and air sealed in transparent nylon bags in small quantities. Inexpensive Electric plastic sealant can easily be purchased.
I observed that custom agents at borders are usually more comfortable with them without having to unwrap black nylon bags which people often use for their food items.

I asked repeatedly the reasons. And stated I could bring it. Or "that's not true". The agent brought her supervisor and he agreed. They kept trying to coax me to check in my luggage. That they were trying to help me. I only travel with carry-on luggage. She did see that i had some $5 bills (only $30) as she searched my purse. Also she said it's a shame to waste the items. I just said I hope someone can use them. I refuse to be bribed.

Reason why it's not advisable to travel with groundnuts in a bottle rather than plastic is for our own sake. It happened to me years ago when I travelled to the UK with 4 bottles of groundnut in my luggage. On arrival in London all the 4 bottles were broken because the bag was not full. All the 4 bottles were wasted. Since then we always put our nuts in Eva plastic bottles.

I was once told by a Nigerian custom officer that even the permissible items you listed fall under export food items therefore it doesn't matter the amount you're carrying, you still need a permit. Of course I stood my ground, made a big noise about it. He dragged me to their office and delayed me to the point that I nearly missed my flights for carrying 5 bottles of roasted peanut, a dozen of dried fish. some gaari and yam flour. He said I should have brought in the yam flour and gaari in 3days b4 my departure for testing. They're all rouges and a shame to our country. The most annoying part is that they carry out all of these shameful activities in the full glare of foreign visitors not minding the kind of impressions they make of the country.

All they are looking for is money, I have never had issues with Nigeria immigration but I always settle them besides it only happens when you have excess luggage.

To be honest, I have never liked to travel with Nigerian foods. It's too much hassle. After all, I can get most of these foods in the UK and if not, hey, that's why it's called 'living in de obodoinbo! 😁

Never had this issue, because always refused to carry food because of the stress of the ‘greedy vultures’. Then it all changed when I got married & my dear wife will make a list. Her defence, it’s cheaper , even all though all these things you can buy in London. The BA section is where there are . I now always fly virgin & no issues at their checkin.

You can't carry to the US...but dey can bring theirs to Nigeria... what's good for the goose is also good for the gander... I remember me traveling to Nigeria with every thing foreign food from milk to bacon to fruits without seeds...and black man mentality everything from the abroad is pass mark while everything from Africa has a coma.(some not good)...

Based on the US guidelines, if it’s been roasted and ground, that’s fine but if only grounded, it’s still consider a fresh fruit which is not allowed.

Canada does not allow milk not for the reason you mentioned ( even if the product is from Holland) I think it's about protecting local products .
By the way, milk is one thing I'd love to take with me. Peak or Nido cost exactly 4 times they price in Canada. I brought three big Tins with me the won't let me with it.

Based on the below, powdered milk may be fine.
Most milk and dairy items from countries with foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) are not allowed. To find out a country’s status for FMD, visit our animal disease status page.
      There are three exceptions:
Liquid milk and milk products for infants or small children are allowed in small quantities (enough for several days’ use)
Products containing powdered or dry milk (baby/infant formula, baking mixes, soup mixes, drink mixes) are allowed in small quantities, if they are properly labelled.
Commercially-packaged and labelled, cooked, shelf-stable, fully finished food items in unopened packages are allowed.

Generally as explained by the presenter, palm oil and other flammables are prohibited for air travel. It’s just that we sometimes get away with things and we just assume it’s ok. But don’t get caught.!You might even be ticketed if you’re a citizen of the US for not following the rules because you’re supposed to better. A close family of mine was ticketed at JFK New York for traveling with Kilishi. Mind you it wasn’t his first time of doing so but the almost $200 ticket made it his last attempt.
