- **EDUCATIONAL VIDEOS ARE EXEMPT FROM TIME LIMITS :-p**
The situation in Egypt is extremely complicated and changing constantly. The arguments between the military and the Muslim Brotherhood go back over half a century and they are much more complicated than the press tends to give them credit for.
I just wanted to share a tiny bit of context to help the world understand the different stakeholders, what they want, why they're angry, and why the first democratically elected leader of Egypt lasted so little time.
Thank you very much to Mohktar Awad for spending so much time on the phone with me yesterday setting me straight!

Hank, as an Egyptian, I have to say you nailed it. That's exactly what happened. It's amazing for me to see an American who is able to understand that mess.
What's happening there now? I ain't heard for them in 2 years.
Not much actually, the general who lead the military coup became president, and everything went back very quickly to how it was before 2011, except may be that the economic situation is worse, and the human rights situation is at the rock-bottom.
Hany Chahine any further updates for those outside of Egypt? I hope things have continued to improve
same old same old everyone protesting in public get charged with something like attempting to coup or something the media totally blind the military/government keeps all the industry and contracting in their pockets (for example the gov will say we want to build this completely useless thing so military take this large sum of many out of the people pockets and build it )and they are the same thing the only free platform is social media but be careful not to get too popular or u will get f****
@@charlottetalaat5651 last time i checked there was no freedom of speech the majority of economy is still ruled by the military the people are miserable and can't speak freely except in social media
and guess what every thing is still expensive af for the meddle class
"So that the military can remain selling refrigerators and chickens and stuff..."
Ketie Saner it's funny because it's true
Dawnless I as fellow Egyptian agree.
Rip the chickens 😂😂
not only that they own the largest biscus company in Egypt one of the four telecom companies and they basically controls all the contracting business from bridges to cities

I'm also hopping to get the f out of there 😂
thanks hank ,as an Egyptian I can say that's a really good explanation
though I would really like to see u explaining how things are going nowadays because nobody seems to understand anything, seriously.......
I second that.
^^^^ I'm not from Egypt, but an update would be super good!
Nothing that much is going on, but our currency is dropping which makes it sort of a crisis for us
I ain't heard anything from Egypt for 2 years so I'm still wondering what is going on there.
Synthetic Fox Inc. well...basically we're living in a comedy show where everything happening is so ironic u can't tell if it was a joke.
Nobody has a clue how to explain what happened these past 3 years 😂😂
We have a saying here in egypt "It's not a country that has an army, but an army that has a country"... #PrayForEgypt

@Ghost The Chosen One ffs you expect that sisi stops covid?
You are LITERALLY the first person I ever found on the internet that doesn't talk out of his/her ass!! You know what your talking about and have some good sources, which therefor makes you a hell of a good person to follow and listen too!! I'm Egyptian and I'm so incredibly thankful Hank made this video. It means so much to see that his caring thoughts are with us, despite our complicated history. He could easily choose to remain apathetic, but his ability to connect with people outisde of his sphere gives me hope.
This video is sooo old
any new updates ??
Since you do all the science videos, I often forget how well rounded your interests are. Thanks for reminding me that it's important to know/study/learn about a variety of subjects. Also, this video was fascinating, informative, and --as always-- engaging.

+Star Splitter the country is democratiish, with a basic Army-Liberal coalition. And a religious insurgency in Sinai. The Muslim Brotherhood is illegal again.
from a global economic perspective its kinda improving, from a citizen's perspective its actually worse in many ways. Infrastructure now is getting the lead in spending over supporting subsidised goods and services ( the right thing to do but the hard one to take IMO ). Thus making living conditions harder on the people for the short and middle term
i hope egypt is working on the oblisco tower i believe?
There should be a part 2 for this video.
Never has anything even remotely educational made me laugh and enjoy it so much as I have being since I discovered the wonderful vlogbrothers. Thank you for what must be two or three years of great content for me now!
Keep strong, Egyptians. My thoughts go out to you at this time.
Being a half Egyptian living in England and quite confused as well as worried about the general situation of my paternal country, I found this to be a greatly informative and just generally an awesome summary. Thanks Hank for yet another fab video!
This was one of my favourite videos from all of your channels. Very nicely done and if you are thinking about starting a current events channel I think that would be a fantastic idea. Too many people simply do not understand politics outside their own country and that really hurts the ability for the global community to progress. Thank you!
These "Explained" videos are so great at explicating complex politics, I really would love to see a series!!
WOW this was a beyond clear video. Thank you! You and John are often amazing at explaining complicated things liek this, but when you try to stick to a four minute time frame it can get a little rushed and unclear. So thank you for the length of this and clarity and such. So good.
Wow, that was more informative and concise than any explanation I've seen on the news.
yeah, I used to have a long-distance relationship with an egyptian man and he told me about some of this stuff, truly fascinating.
interesting
lol... they're nice, it's a hell of a long, expensive flight though
6 years update, Egypt....Explained again.
YESSSSS OH MY GOD. Why is the world sleeping on EGYPT?! THE CRISIS THERE IS HUGE
Incredible how you summarized such complex situation in few minutes, as an Egyptian who is very familiar with the situation, I recommend this 'Coles Notes' version to anyone wants to know whats going on in Egypt it is way better than confused media version. Great job and keep up the good work !!
Wow! That was amazing, you told me exactly what I wanted to know and did it in a timely manor. Keep being awesome!
As a fellow nerd, and someone who lived in Cairo from 2009-2013 (PRIME REVOLUTION TIME!) I want to thank you for this, belated as the thanks may be. When people would hear I had been living in Egypt, the invariable reaction was usually a wide-eyed, holy moley reaction, followed soon after by an "Oh crap, I don't really know what was going on over there I hope she doesn't ask me what I think of it..." I was able to direct them to this video, and the next time I saw them they seemed so much more relaxed and knowledgeable. That's down to you and the simple, straight-forward breakdown you've provided. Of course, it's all extremely complex, but I'd rather people heard this and had the Cole's Notes version rather than that deer-in-the-headlights look!
I'd assume a military like Egypt's would be corrupt, but it seems like they are having a positive influence on the course of Egypt.
Thanks for the firsthand perspective.
And FYI, typically one would say "hell yes they do" instead of "yes hell they do".
They have crushed protesters of all kinds, murdering thousands of them, many shot dead in the street. They're restricted rights, including the right to speech and assembly. They imprisoned Egypt's first elected ruler.
marcushl Isn't the Muslim Brotherhood's stance on democracy that once they have been democratically elected democracy has served its purpose and is no longer necessary?
SpazzyMcGee1337 That criticism could be levelled at most political parties in the region.
marcushl Fair enough, but as a religious group they are uniquely able to do so.
This really was the most informative video I've seen about this entire thing. I sincerely thank you.
You actually summarised a very complex country very well. Well done.👍
UGH THANK YOU. As a Middle Eastern studies major, I've been trying to explain this whole Egypt thing to all of my friends and family, but I'm terrible with words and I just end up getting aggravated that they don't understand and start shouting at them in Arabic. I'm going to show them this video now so that they can understand. Thank you!!
Hank, I know that these videos take a long time to make, but is there a possibility we could get a video like this about Cuba and their conflict with America? Maybe since we're coming up on the one year mark of the announcement?
THANK YOU!! I just used this to help write a paper!! It helped clear up a LOT of questions I had.
Thank you for taking time to talk about this :)
It would be awesome if you did a simillar video on the patriot act!!! Im not sure about every one else but, with snowden and such it seems like people should understand the patriot act a little better. oh! and you guys are just amazing!!
Let me correct this, from an Egyptian
Egyptian people did not wait for American support. When Americans claimed and boasted that Egyptians want their support, which was unproven, Egyptians went to the streets and publicly announced their lack of giving any shits.
Hank, thank you very much. I had a hard time trying to understand what was happening in Egypt and you managed to explain it very well.
Thanks for this! It really opend my perspective
Hank will you please explain the situation in Ukraine?
Jeez, this is like Game of thrones in real life!!!
Thank you for making this!
That article is deffinitley interesting, thank you.
Still, John or Hank explaining it definitely adds something to the update.
where can I buy those "military chickens"? :)
***** you need to educate yourself too :)
Ay Caramba
From the military supermarkes
and am not joking about it 😂😂😂
You must get the Egyptian Nationality ..
New Update which u don't know, EVERY Young Egyptian gets from 1 to 3 years compulsory service in the Egyptian Army, so there are no Sacred bound between people and the Egyptian Army, coz the Egyptian Army are the Egyptian people ( son, father, uncle, friend, neighbor, brother ) , Egyptian Army are not like some of the Arabian Armies (rented personals: mostly) So we're the ones whose protecting ourselves....therefore the Egyptian Army are the Egyptian people.Thats why most of the Egyptians like the Army coz if we hated them or denied them, means we hate or deny ourselves
I'm curious, does that include women or just young men?
Really ?!
**Me:Actually has a cousin that served in the army**
My cousin was sent a punk and came back a man, He never drove for some general's wife, and he never took a free labour job worked in some factory, for 2 years it was constant training and exercise, Though he didn't get any combat experience (as where he was posted he was on guard duty to some base or another idk) He wishes he did, because he disliked how all his training went to waste on some guard duty in a base in the middle of the desert :P
Thanks so much Hank. I was really confused before, but you explained it in an awesome way. Thanks and dftba!
Hank Green, you are a great person! Firstly, I agree with you on almost everything except your opinion on Morsi. (Or maybe I agree, but because I didn't get much of your opinion on him as you didn't say much on that.)
Morsi was a genius. He was so smart, and he really wanted good for Egypt, but that was the problem. Egypt didn't need someone who just wanted good for it, it needed someone who knows how to lead. That was a thing you needed to make 4 different major factions and many other minor ones follow you, in order to do good to this country.
Other than that, you did great analysing this. I am actually surprised you got that very fine view of the situation. Great job and bless you!
2 year later, Still..... haven't..... found..... the...... path. *falls down and stop breathing*
Couldn't be more accurate 😂
5 years later...
you should also talk about Tunisia i mean it's where the whole revolutions thing started ^^
you wrong the first country arabian got started the revolution is algeria
ghadi bahadi
in 1992
ghadi bahadi explain, actually though the spark of the Arab Spring is credited with the fruit seller who set himself on fire in protest of the Tunisian government
ghadi bahadi I think the person meant the Arab Springs
ghadi bahadi he meant the recent chain of revolutions, and Egypt had a revolution in 1952...
Thanks, that helped me understand what is happening so much better!
I'm writing an essay on the conflict between religion and law in Egypt for my Comparative Politics class and am including the recent protests as one of my main points so this video is very helpful. Thanks a lot!
While alot of this is true, in the end its always been about Jerusalem.
wait so the Egyptian military is run independently of the government by economist that just want stability if i understand this properly right?
Yeah, in the traditional sense they are more of a paramilitary corporation.
There actually quite a few countries where the military is at least partially independent from the actual government. Sometimes this can be positive and means they can avoid being influenced if someone a bit sinister and non sensible takes power* but it mostly means they can pretty much replace any government they don't like by using force. This is part of the reason why there were so many military dictatorships in Latin America in the 20th century. The other part was the USA interfering.
*An example of this is how the Turkish military see themselves as a bulwark against religious extremism in government. However being secular doesn't mean they are good guys. Just ask the the Kurds.
Stability has it's perks they put it ahead of democracy and human rights. They don't really care if the person in charge is an authoritarian as long he isn't incompetent and the country is stable. Egypt went through decades of stable dictatorship without the military caring.
***** Thats considering the military actually gives free-elections which has never happened in history and in egyption history the military is one that had ruled egypt for the last 60 years or so it is unlikely egypt will become a democracy after such a coup.
Wow. Learned a lot, really fast. Does this mode of delivery make my battery run down faster? Splendid job. xx
A absolutely marvelous explanation! Thank you!
Thank you for helping me with homework.
Heh.
Can you teach my gov class?
What's a gov class?
This is one of the reasons why I enjoy watching these guys so much. I learn something.

Hank thank you very much for this video. I was incredibly confused. While all this was happening, I was backpacking in Ecuador and had no idea what was going on anywhere.
0:42 am I the only one who sees that ISIS flag there?
I saw it. Did you know that Isis is actually an Egyptian Goddess?
TheSparda81 honestly yes
***** I know it is.
+TheSparda81 The ISIS flag is borrowed from the original Islamic flag carried by the 1st Muslims. ISIS hides behind the Islamic flag in order to give itself legitimacy. Pretty much like how the state of Israel hides behind the Jewish identity (see star of David on their flag) when in reality the state was not ever built upon the Judaism.
+TheSparda81 ISIS became a thing one year after this video. So no, that can't be what the person holding the flag was supporting. That flag pre-dates ISIS by over a thousand of years, so it has been used for various causes. In this case, I imagine it is about justice.
Hank for president!!!!! VOTE HANK!! i would... Seriously
thanks I definitely needed this because no one on tumblr was explaining it.
I love all of you "explained" videos so much.
That election is a perfect example of why you need the preferential voting system that seeks absolute majority.
1. Egyptian people does not have a sacred bond with the Army.
2. The reason why Morsi tried to make his decision concerning the evolutionary affairs can't be over ruled by the supreme court. is because he had the parliamentary power because the Mubarak appointed old judges abolished first ever elected parliament.
3. U have to put the Judiciary System here like u put the Army as well.
well said
I know much more about the world than I did 5 minutes ago. Thank you Hank!
You need to know something.

Informative and entertaining. Subbed.
Did anyone else see those Isis flags
I did.
***** 00:37-00:50 if you look closely in the crowd. Some people are waving flags that are isis.
***** مش امبرطورية خلافة :) في فرق :) شيل كلمة Empire وحط كلمة caliphate
As if the caliphate flag represents anything more moderate than ISIS... Oh wait aren't they creating the modern caliphate which was rules by the same laws... Heck by that logic Isis must be moderate much like the Muslim brotherhood! Let's all shove our heads up our asses and just accept that pushing ppl of buildings for not supporting them ( done by Isis and the MB) is moderate... I mean if that makes sense to you
No they don't represent the Muslims and they are extremists not a moderate they kill Muslims and they try to Creat a false caliphate with false islamic rules so that false project will secure Israel and Destory The powerful Arabic Armies and so far they succeeded Except only The Egyptian army Only that remain Powerful
So, as it turns out, things have been pretty un-great in Egypt since this video. Sisi, the head of as repressive a regime as we've ever had, is about to be 're-elected'.
Hank, would you be willing to do a follow-up for our 'election'?

Love you vlogbrothers! You guys are both hilarious and informative. I was in Egypt for 10 months serving with the MFO on the medical side of things, and worked extensively with the Egyptian military because the Sinai has always been a mess, and pretty much everything that you guys say was spot on. The real estate thing is hilarious because the Egyptian military actually will place guys outside of their investments, which in turn always do the best business (in my experience, it was large resorts) while other, name you valiant attempts, at real estate are left absolutely abandoned. Huge, extensive projects and massive partially finished developments are everywhere, and I do mean everywhere. This fuels a large population of homeless in Egypt, which accounts for much of the undocumented frustration, due to the lack of food, water, but not shelter. They are like gypsies, but with a ton of street smarts. Add that into the revolutionary mix. Also, food is a problem in Egypt. On the service it looks fine, but with 85+ million people living within 10 miles of the Nile, which is also the major source of water and irrigation, is, instead, trampled with people who are desperately trying to find a job. It is true that food is cheap there, but everyone knows that it will eventually be gone. Another large issue was waste removal. This actually goes for most of the Middle East, save Israel, but there are PILES of trash everywhere. The people there hate trash, and the military, who owns the rights to put it somewhere, won't. They want more money, which is one reason why the US gives as much as they do. The only city in Egypt where there isn't many visible piles of trash is Sharm el Shiek, which, coincidentally is where a lot of rich and influential people live, and happens to be miles away from Cairo, where most of the problems are. Like you said, revolutions are slow and this is only the beginning, and like the French Revolution, it is just a matter of time until Robespierre shows up. "You must realize," an Egyptian shop keeper told me when talking about Morsi, "this is really is not his fault. There is an (roughly translated: avalanche) of problems that we have. They are generations deep. They existed for my father and his father. The first guy is always doomed. We are just trying to make it day by day. God (Allah) has us in mind and protects us."
There's an ISIS flag at 0:43
Thats not ISIS flag, its existed long before ISIS, will exist long after it too.
What was it the flag of before?

yes , Islamists supporting Morsi , you can find all kinds of Wahhabi or salafi Islamic flags ( El Qa'ida , Taliban ,isis even Saudi Arabia flag ....)
A lot of your sources are from Wikipedia...i hope that's not a norm for your videos.
Wikipedia is actually an EXCELLENT source for purposes like this. He wasn't writing a book, nor was he publishing in an academic setting. Wikipedia is peer-reviewed and updated faster than any on-paper publication every could be. When something incorrect is published on paper, it's permanent. When something incorrect is published on Wikipedia, it gets fixed. Ergo, I hope that using Wikipedia IS the norm for Hank's videos.
no but many people assume these educational CZcams vids to be true, and if it's not backed with reliable sources than the greater population will be misled. and i believe Wikipedia is NEVER an excellent source.
Nicholas Mitchell
If you find something to be inaccurate in the video, then by all means correct it, citing your "reliable sources" of course. Simply complaining that he uses sources from Wikipedia, and claiming that this means they aren't reliable, and furthermore implying that because of this the information is both untrue and misleading is silly and useless. Oh and you just used "I believe" in your argument against using Wikipedia, which is a pretty big red flag that you have no evidence whatsoever to stand on.
Jeff Trechter
God damn! What a shutdown.
Jeff Trechter Whoa dude chill. I love this guys work including Sci-Show, and am not dissing him in anyway. Furthermore I agree with Lynsye that yes Wikipedia has come a long way, but I am a man that has a hard time believing a lot of things on the internet. If a Wikipedia topic uses a citation then I'm going to check it out, and when I write Research papers I cite Wikipedia's source not Wikipedia. But when you research a topic like politics and political news (Such is this video) then citations become misconstrued. The bottom line is that anyone can say anything about everything as long as it sounds like it makes sense. for example: I could edit the Wiki page about the moon Titan, and say it doesn't have an atmosphere and cite NASA.com....except that it dose and NASA.com doesn't exist.(it's NASA.gov) So me PERSONALLY, i dislike Wiki and just stay away from it.
Thank you for your video. Greetings from Egypt

Dear Hank, I love you but you're not "America". You are "The United States of America". "America" is a word that refers to a different geographic region (aka continent) and not a country.
I say this coming from Argentina, which also belongs to America. As much as I enjoy many things of the US culture, I completely disagree on others and therefore I find it very frustrating when someone refers to the US as "America", a country that doesnt necesarily represent all the other countries in America.
Side note: not really talking about the gentilic, which would bring us to a hole different discussion.
Right! I agree with you.
***** Not to mention how the Europeans insist on being on a seperate continent from Asia :P
"America" is a term generally used of other countries to refer to the United States. I agree with you, but language has its own sociology, unfortunately.
***** Scots have no problem being called British, because they are British. Americans have a problem of calling everyone in the UK English, which makes a lot of people very angry.
also there is no word for estadounidense in English. United Staters doesn't sound right.. So we call ourselves Americans, and even though it should really be the citizens of the USA, that's too long, so I don't think we'll ever stop calling ourselves Americans.
Would love to see one of these on the current, and ongoing turmoil in Thailand.
i keep coming back to this video every few months to understand how we got to where we are...
Correction:
The petition was a military sponsored campaign
It wasn't 22 million at all. They just filled one square and got to call the shot for 80m Egyptian.
In August 2014 the military killed over 2000 of pro Morsi supporter who were protesting the coup and a tyranny started.
Sisi the head of the military seized power in a kangaroo election with 97% of the votes LOOL!
Thank you so much for explaining this!
Great video, it is an accurate, albeit basic, summarisation of the current Egyptian revolts. So glad this video was made!
I am here after finishing "the square" on netflix 7 years after it came out. Wow. This really glues up that documentary well
You should turn "Explained" into a series on vlogbrothers, explaining complicated world events or ideals! I would definitely watch it!
This article really helped me to understand, it focuses on yesterday's (Aug 14) events but talks about how they came about as well. It's on the CBC website with the title: Egypt authorizes police use of deadly force after 638 killed
This is why I love Vlogbrothers. Some clarity, at last.
Really this vid explains everything thx man love from Egypt
Impressive!! U know alot..good job for giving a great summry for the situation in Egypt
This is excellent. I was there in 2011 and I've spent the past 2 years trying to explain the Revolution to Americans and how complicated and kind of awesome it is... never could do it in less than 10min =P well done!
Thank you! I was so confused with Morrsi. And what a nice message to end the video with :) Good luck, Egypt!
What really stands out to me about this video, watching it over 10 years later, is just how well it holds up. This video makes me want to read a really long book about modern Egyptian politics because it’s so nuanced and complicated (like most politics is, I suppose). If anybody has any book recommendations, let me know.
