- I should call up BC and ask what's going on, maybe yell at them for giving me a bad product. I should go onto some forums and post and ask questions. I should post in a FB group with a sound clip and ask "what's that noise".
No I shouldn't. I should take my wheels off, pop the hood and investigate myself! That's what I'm doing today!
Suspension clunks happen, especially after installing coilovers. Hell, just owning coilovers comes with more maintenance, including tightening things that get loose.

I've been searching for a fix to this noise and I have some BC coilovers as well. Im trying later on the day and hopefully this is the fix I need 😭
It actually worked!!
Shoutout to you for investigating and solving the problem yourself. Great video!
+Taylor Ray
Thanks Taylor! We got calls all the time a about clunks after install, I bet you guys do too. Check all the things for tightness first! Btw, happy I went with the softer spring rates.
Yep, same here, it's almost always something simple, but people like to assume the worst. Yeah I'm a fan of the softer rates on these cars, unless people are looking to go really low.
I've had suspension clunking for over a year and you just helped me solve it in 15 minutes!! It was the the top nut like yours. Thank you thank you thank you!!
Awesome, glad you found it
You, my good sir .. hopefully just saved more future headaches. Have this same rattling clunk in my back left one. Tried what I could tightening that top nut but shaft keeps spinning. Didn't think of busting out Mr Allen!
For top nuts..
Use an extended socket and Alan key then use spanner on extended socket.
However don't use a ratchet obviously.. until you need to torque it..
"Pop the hood and investigate myself" lol yes that is right when dealing with modding your Car
THANK YOU! Jesus I was so fed up trying to find it. Love the vids bro.
Nice! That dang top nut
awesome this was my exact problem! thanks to this video i got it fixed, i owe you!
Glad to hear! It’s nice getting positive feedback, there’s too much negative out there.
I have BC coil overs and I have the same issue. I checked every nut and bolt and still has that clunk. My last resort is to grease and lower the damper before I ask to return them
Make sure the bolt on top of the tophats are tight, that usually fixes the clunking sound in coils.
+Saturday Winter
Thanks!
So glad I found this video! Gonna check all the parts of my BC coils this week!
Thanks dude I have the same issue. I'll see if this fix works for me
My rsx is doing a clunk noise hopefully this is it. Hopefully get to try this on Saturday 🙏
I’m having the same clunk as yours after installing bc coilovers but my top nuts are tight idk what it could be
I got this exact problem 🤦🤦 clunking of the spring turning when I steer pita will have a look
I'm having this problem on my RSX. I'll be trying this out tomorrow. Hopefully it works.
Any luck?
No. My issue wasn't the same thing. I have a new issue now...I own a Subaru.
spark plug socket works for that nut. same thing happen to me
kariem court
Good tip, thanks!
@@CarSick or a set of those craftsmen paasthrough socket wrenches. saved my ass on more than one occasion. its bassically a box end wrench, but with sockets and extensions, hollow in the middle.
I have a clunk just like this. Going to check them Top nuts in the morning!
Did you get it figured out?
My teins do this (I use oem too hat) and I’m sick of the noise, top nuts weren’t loose (by hand anyways) I’ll have to go back out and use a wrench and see if I can get a few more turns on each nut
I wonder if the top mount rubber or bearing is bad
Car Sick!! Mount rubber was bad and upon further inspection one of my stabilizer links were loose (recently replaced) apparently I didn’t tighten it enough 😂 fixed those issues and The Noise is all gone
Damn man. Why dont you have more subs? haha Youre stuff is awesome. Keep up the vids!
Prism_Guard
Blame it on youtube and their rigged algorithms! Make CZcams great again!!
Yesss mine was making that stupid clunk as well, my top nut was loose as well, thanks man !!!!!
Glad to hear!
it was sway bar links on my SC400, try checking that
McFly FPV
Sway bar clunk is pretty common. All my endlinks and mounts were tight though.
8:20 pass thru sockets are a helluva tool. 🤘🏼
Another good tool to use in this situation is an o2 sensor socket or a crows foot.
Regarding the preload someone mentioned before I've has same experience with BC's we install them out of the box and viola.
+Frank Rodriguez
Thanks for the tip! I have crows' feet, but I didn't even think about using them. Next time! Most of the time I just open the BC box and slap them in, only adjusting ride height and tightening the lock rings. Thanks for making it easy BC!
You have a comedian Bill Hicks vibe to you. Very helpful video. Thank you!
use a impact gun tight thise center nut on the shock wene there no room to wotk with a wrench
bob graton
Good tip! I'm stuck working in my little apartment garage right now so my compressor isn't hooked up, and my electric half inch impact seems to be getting weak. So, allen key and wrench it is for me!
My noise came from the upper spring seat bearing! Need to buy parts from BC ASAP!
Those can go bad. Most of them are just rubber though
Hopefully this is the solution to my problem. I installed new FF type 2 rear coilovers on my '05 RSX Type S yesterday afternoon. Right after I backed out of my driveway and drove forward I started hearing a loud clunking (thump thump thump thump) LOL from the passenger side rear of my car. I immediately went up the street and turned around. Once back in my driveway I jacked up the car and took off the passenger rear wheel and inspected all bolts and collar rings etc. I checked the top two bolts inside my hatch. All tight. I had seen that it can actually be the bolt under the dampner as in your video. I had to work all day and drive my wife's car today. Otherwise some forums suggest a bad sway bar end link. It makes no noise at all from the driver side rear. Any help and advice would be greatly appreciated. Sorry for the longest comment on your page. Thumbs up!
Sarasota? Fruitville Rd?
I have the same clunk and rattle sound coming from passenger rear side. My BC are brand new installed by tune shop. It drives me crazy.
TheRealDamaini
There are many moving parts to a coilover, tighten everything.
I found out that the person who installed the coilovers forgot to put the stock bushing on the coilover so that is why i was hearing clanking. All is good now.
Strong work bud!! Very logical approach
Thanks!
Hey guys. I have a cls 250 Mercedes. I've clunking from the passenger rear. I've had it checked twice and can't find issue. Is there a way of tightening the lock ring in the back? I've been told it could be possibly a top strut mount. Driving me crazy. Please help.
Very niceeeeeeeee. I have the same issue with my bc on the s2000. It’s bothering me a lot
Broham, it doesn't seem that you set the preload to the coilovers springs either. I don't remember you doing it in install video. Please take some time out to do that, I need you.
Armando Castro
I didn't set preload when I installed them, BC usually sets them and I've done enough that I can tell if the preload is good or not by just spinning the spring. If the spring spins easy but not too easy, then you're good. It's not a bad idea to set it again to make sure it is spot on. Maybe i'll do a video on setting preload.
Thanks for saving me time and work dude!
@9:42 ahh haha thats a good feeling
Hey carsick!
I'm having the same issue with my coilovers, but adjusting the top nut is for dampening. It was driving super stiff, so I adjusted the top nut right? Well it drives alot smoother, but now its clunking. So I guess what I'm getting at is if I was to tighten the nut back it will get rid of the clunking, but would be a really stiff ride, and if I loosen, the clunking will be there but be a smooth ride. My coilovers dont have the Alan key insert, so I'm not sure what to do. Anyone please help!!
I know you haven't uploaded in a while, but for anyone else. A set of crows foot wrenches should help actually get on top nut of the shock
my back ones are making that noise in the rear is it because of the same thing u did ?
everything is tight on mine but for some reason the whole body rotates on my rears, like if i were to raise or lower it doesn’t rather the whole body moves and it’s just spinning not going up or down
Same problem. Did you solve ir?
@@japramoa9817 I just bought new coilovers lol
I can hear it.
Thanks!
How to adjust the preload ?
Bring spring seat up until it touches the spring, then bring the lock collar to the spring seat, then spin the spring seat compressing the spring until there is about 3-5mm of a gap between the lock collar and seat. You can use the spanner wrench as a guide, it is about 4mm thick.
literally a series of unfortunate events
do we need any torque wrench to tighten the top of the bc coils or just using spanner tighten will do the trick? And is it true that miata interior rattle is quite normal? Mine is a NC 07.
anthony tan
BC prob has a torque spec for it but the problem is when you stick a torque wrench on it, the damper shaft will spin. So, most people just hit it with a couple "chuga chugas" of an impact gun. Or use a crow's foot/regular wrench and an allen key to tighten.
anthony tan My interior rattle a bit, not terrible. And I don't remember any major rattles in my dad's NC when he had it. But it is a convertible, so you can expect some.
Oh ok i got it. Those churp churp gun is those gun that can remove our tires nuts iirc.
Car Sick!! My hard top squeaks when i drive up hill. I went miata forum and they mentioned applying electric tape over the hard top handle will do the trick. Btw, does ur miata produce "bong" sound when drove over speed humps and very bumpy road? My NC produce such noises from right rear. Brought to mechanic and they checked everything is tightened and looks healthy. I dunno wads wrong ..
anthony tan
hmm, an absorber failing maybe?
Thanks for the video man . I had the exact same problem checked everything but that bolt on the top was loose as fuck. Cheers
take a deepwell socket and weld a handle on the side.
Good idea
AAAA I HAVE THIS SAME SOUND THANK GOD I FOUND THIS
Great video, I got a little anxiety watching you tighten the top nut hahaha
Yeah, I just re-watched this. It's been about 2 and a half years. Kinda cringing myself, especially knowing I had a set of crow's feet wrenches in my tool box a few feet away.
“Gootentight“ tf is that😂
German torque spec.
Play on words of a German word lol
nice vids! but whats up with ur toe
blaze weed m9
lol, you found my retarded toe! Born with it man.
Thank you!!!!
Well mine not really a clunk clunk more a ting ting when steering 🤣🤣
THANK YOU !!!!
keep the gold commin
Mr Anderson
Aliens
You right, you right
Bro what did you tighten 😂
evrything. if it clunks, something is loose, just find it
Mine makes noise when I hit bump sounds like camber arm hitting frame ... possible???
Anything is possible, but if any of the coilover hardware is loose, it will sound like metal clucking, hitting something.
Car Sick!! It was too screw and also toooo low , got better coilovers F&F type 2 rides much better n no noise
ahhhhh thank you
thanks!!!!!
Dude, you totally went through that stop sign didn't you? Massive edit right there lol!
Meh, it's just an apartment complex parking lot
I mean "WE" need you.....
