  • An English overdub of the 1981 film
    'A thousand years seem like just one day,
    Monks from Athos, the Holy Mountain'
    originally made for German TV.
    The film is described as
    "a sensitive study of one of the
    twenty great monasteries of Mount Athos,
    a thousand year old monastic republic in northern Greece-
    the famous 'Holy Mountain' of the Orthodox church.
    A detailed picture of life in the 900 year old
    monastery of Simonopetra."

    Though I've never been to Mt. Athos, I've received much ministry from there. I love the Philokalia. I've watched numerous videos about Athos and read several books about it and about some of the monks. Thank God for this Holy place!

    Glory to God for their Abbot , formerly (shown here) the God-bearing Elder Aemilianos now retired! The Love of God energizes these holy monastics -the All-Holy Spirit speaks through them to His little ones! Their work has come here to Sacred Monastery of Saint Nina in Union Bridge MD and Holy Spirit Monastery in Burnsville NC (under Georgian Patriarchate) whose spiritual Elder is Dionysios of Mt. Athos. We praise God for His answer to our prayer for them to come to be in America !

    Elder Aemilianos' writings are a treasure of guidance for anyone who desires with whole heartedness to follow Christ as Bridegroom and Lord of our Lives. Available in English: " Life in the Spirit" and "Church at Prayer" - both with collections of sermons and talks given by this holy elder!

    I want to bring this Holy Faith to everyone I know, because I want them to have the peace and joy that Jesus Christ has given me since I discovered this Holy Church. Afterall, it's His Holy Church, and He made it possible for me to be truly converted to His way of thinking. I've got a long way to go, but I love this journey I'm taking, because it makes me see things in a much more positive way. He also gives me hope that I didn't have before during my years as an outsider and later on, a Protestant. I was a mess! In fact, one of my Greek friends used to call me the "raging Protestant." I have to chuckle every time I think of that, because I certainly didn't know how to "see" things any other way than what was in the Bible, and even that was skewed. I knew I was missing so much, and I also knew I wouldn't be able to find the answers I needed in my former background.

      scott morse May I also add that the "dicephalos aetos" or the double -headed eagle initially represented the Roman/Byzantine Empire. It stood for the vast empire that faced the East as well as the West. This symbol is a great part of the Eastern Greek Orthodox Church. Many other countries have incorporated in their cultural symbolisms, such as Russia, Albania and others. In addition, the Patriarchate in Constantinople also uses it in their flag.

      ORTHODOX PRIEST I am a catholic and like to believe that i am saved by the blood of Jesus Christ. I do not speak against orthodox Christianity for it is beautiful and seems to me like it's liturgy and worship are set in precious amber from the first disciples of Jesus, totally unchanged as a reminder to this vile modern age that truth and grace transcend time and fashions and movements. God and Christ are eternally the same and unchangeable.
      I would gladly attend orthodox mass but not sure if it's possible. I am a bit confused about the differences between Byzantine, Easterm, Melkite etc - they all seem to gloriously holy and divine.

    The Greek monks took over, first as colonists and then as occupiers. Initially, Mt Athos belonged to the local Aromanian shephers. After settling in the Greeks edicted from Constantinople that only they should live there and evicted the local Aromanian shepherds. They stole the land. So even the Greek monks are thieves. You should have mentioned that since it is history.

    There are only 2 Mountains of God on Earth..........One is the Mountain in Sinai, and the other is Mt Zion, Jerusalem, there is NO other.......
    Nowhere in the Scriptures does it teach, Isolate yourself to worship God......Jesus said, Live your life, but be not part of this world, the Material world.........He didnt say, lock yourself in a building or Island, of what value to God if you do that......The true test of Faith, is to live in the real world and hold your faith.........Locking yourself away, there is no faith because there is no life...........This is extremism and is not what God intended for man..........
    The Apostles of Christ did not live like Monks, they lived in the real world with real people, all of their lives......and they preached the word of God in His Christ............and they certainly did not perform religious ceremonies like the monks, they simply broke the bread and drank unfermented wine to remember Jesus and the work he did in his Fathers Name....

    • @topcat1000

      Praying to God is as simple as breathing air. you can do it anywhere. Prayer is communication with God. Locking yourself away in a Monastery is not what God intended us to do. That is not the real world. Jesus was the Son of the Living God, if anyone should have set the example of locking yourself away, it would have been him.......but he didn't, Jesus lived in the real world, interacting with reality........
      Nowhere in Scripture does God command us to pray to him from a life of seclusion. Look at the results of the Catholic Priests, unable to live in the real world because of the demands placed on them, and the end result, Pedophilia, sexual liaisons with women.........God created man to have a mate.....and to worship him in that relationship, and to grow up strong and spiritual.... I am Orthodox....

    • @dragansky9477
      @dragansky9477 Před 10 lety +7

      Jesus also "locked" himself away into the desert. No matter how you read it - literally, metaphorically, etc. One needs to first calm one's mind and face his or her own inner enemies and issues in a ferocious battle. Do not fear, slay yourself as you slay all the demons without a blink of an eye, then wherever you abide, wherever you are at the particular moment, nothing can break apart your link and nothing can get you distracted. And still, ascetism is as dangerous as the life full of worldly sinful pleasures.. Praying to God is not always that easy, meditation is not that easy too. How can you do whatever you do without the mindfulness and full awareness of your practice? Recluses go away from the world just to get that inner calm so they can maintain their practice the best way they can. For the most of them Praying to God is not as that easy as to yourself, Topcat. Sometimes breathing air means you should drown first.

    • @topcat1000
      @topcat1000 Před 10 lety +1

      Dragansky, I kind of agree with some of your comments...so, I dont want to take that away from you.....Christ, was a man....in the flesh like every other Human, Tempted like man on all points, and he overcame every obstacle......He went into the desert, to face those challenges in graphic detail for our sake......He knew who he was, what he had to do, and he did it to the end......and the moral to that Biblical story, is to show man, that we, in the flesh can overcome sin, that we do not have to transgress the Law.......and to trust God........
      Then he came out of the desert and commenced his Mission, in Public......and many times we all do that, we take time out......Prayer is communication with God, and sometimes it isnt easy, totally agree...... The Bible teaches us, to go to our prayer closet or a quiet place to pray......but we also return to the real world. We are a communal animal, we were never created to be in isolation......on our own!
