  • In The Usher of Lea House School by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, a young man, Harold Weld, desperate for a teaching post takes up a position in West Hampstead for 'sixty pounds, board, lodging and washing'. First published in 1899 under the title 'The Story of the Latin Tutor' in The Strand Magazine.
It is read by Greg Wagland for Magpie Audio.
The artwork is by Albert Anker, titled 'The School Exam'. Not altogether fitting for the story but I liked it!

Such joy when I find a new Magpie Audio story in my rotation. I've said before and here again, that Mr. Wagland could read the instructions on how to install a washing machine and make it sound mysterious and exciting!!

Yay! I love anything by Arthur Conan Doyle, especially his ghost stories. Also I love Sherlock Holmes! I live in Baker Street in London! I walk past where they give the tour every single day! Everybody pray for the end of this lockdown so that we can get our lives back and open up Our cities! And if you don’t believe in any kind of spirituality! I’m not religious but very spiritual, then just think positively about the situation! Blessings!

the british writers of the 19th century are surely eternally at the apex of all writers in the english language....such lovely structure and vocabulary and subtle intelligence....such charming and approachable stories full of human stress and distress in the most humanely evil and disturbingly pleasant ways.
the narration is superb and supremely brilliant and intelligent .... so different from other entertainments is 21st century USA

The wisdom from these old books is why I keep coming back. @ about 9:30: To tolerate a menacing personality means “you have the spirit of a perfect Christian or no spirit at all”. This is very deep. Whilst the outcome is the same; the tolerance of a menace or bully, the internal gears that produce this outcome are very psychologically and spiritually different - either one is a coward, or being blackmailed, or is a saint. Thus, with the same behavior exhibited on the outside, the internal struggles and thus the quality and quantity of suffering could not be more different for each case.

One of the elements that I appreciate most about Doyle's tales is the human mystery - why does a person act/ speak/ respond/ interact in such a manner? There doesn't always have to be a mysterious clue or stolen item or a confounding death; psychology is the "riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma".
