Having played a lot with N62s I've learned it's best to prevent valve stem seal (and other seal) issues than it is to chase them after the vehicle is already blowing smoke.
That said even after the valve stem seals are fixed it can take upwards of 500 miles before it stops smoking. There's lots of residual gunk and oil where it shouldn't be that makes its way into the combustion chamber. You either have to clean it out or be patient while it burns off.

Should have diagnosed it correctly. Compression test would have saved a Lot of time and Money.
@ Mechanics do change broken parts, but to change let say a CPU for a bad connection in the plug or a broken wire he's just a part changer.
Javier Hernandez when you polish cylinders you should change pistons. Not just new pistons, but a pistons new size. Because when you polish cylinders you are changing their diameter. And that changes space between piston and cylinders. That’s why polishing didn’t help for Alpina. This mechanic useless guy

Wow, that seems like a premature euthanizing of this car. With that much oil in the intake side of the engine, I'd venture to say 95 to 99% of the smoke is coming from the supercharger. You've gone this far Hoovie, at least have him replace the seals on the supercharger. I think you would be pleasantly surprised at the results. Have they done a compression test?? Unless you have one cylinder way out of line from the rest, I don't see how it could be causing that much smoke. As another commented, cylinder and valve seal smoke issues tend to be worse on start up, and decrease after. And most importantly, those are very consistently there or not there. This business of sometimes it just goes from no smoke to heavy smoking after running for a while, points at a supercharger issue. Replace the seals on the compressor for God's sake before you put her down!

Keep up the good work, Hoovie. The BMW trap is so easy to fall into - we're seduced by the gorgeous sheetmetal and pure performance of these things, along with relatively affordable resale values. Then we crash on the rocks of reality and soul-crushing repair costs. It's so sad.
Rebuilding a 7 series is like trying to rebuild a firecracker that went off!
Even e32 is notorious for having electric gremlins let alone these newer versions

Yes, that's why J&J is paying almost what I initially paid for both of these cars.
Cars like these fetch a premium with parts resealers. They don't go sit in a lot like your common high production cars. They immediately get broken down for components that are on demand lists. Hoovie probably got back what he paid for it and then the used parts supplier will make a profit on top of that.

It would take a couple of hours of autobahn driving to burn the residual oil out of the exhaust. Who knows how long the motor has been filling the exhaust up with oil! Take it for a proper drive, give it a good thrashing & see if the smoke gets better.

@@DulceSeeker Some m-power engines have such recommendation - only 10w60. I had Alfa Romeo in the past.. Most of those cars burn oil like mad. Mine doesn't. Because i was using racing oil 10w60 and 5w50 only.

I love buying cars like this. That engine block isn’t special, so while a complete alpina assembly is expensive, the actual failed component isn’t. Same thing with rebuilding the supercharger.

I have a 2008 BMW 750li that I still daily drive and it’s in absolute perfect shape surprisingly no problems with anything no lights or codes.
Ive had a number of friends, and associates, who have temporarily owned a BMW, for status, when the 1st major service came up, and they found out the cost, they promptly relieved themselves of said BMW.
There's a reason old 7-series Bimmers retain about 5% of their original resale value.

Since all the 'desirability' of the vehicle is in the engine (as bad as it is), a swap is basically taking away what makes it an Alpina.

Last year I parted with a much loved 2001 540i Sport after ten years of good and reasonably trouble free use. Timing chain guides had failed at c. 160k and it was just too much of a project to take on. Why BMW built car with plastic guides idk. Otherwise, biggest issue I had was changing the alternator. These cars require regular attention but upkeep cost with the right one isn't terrible if you can do most of your own work. Still miss it though. It was a lot of fun to drive.
I used to wonder what happened to all these $100k sedans when they got older. Then I found Hoovies garage. Now I know.

There was oil in the charge pipe when it was removed. I know the valve stem seals are a problem on these cars but it seems the more likely root cause (supercharger seals/bearings) was not even addressed.
@Strong man delete the supercharger?! Why? If it's knackered, rebuild or replace it. If you just remove it, you'll have an engine down on compression, down on power, guzzling fuel and running way too rich, which in turn means it smokes and won't pass emissions...

I’ve got 3 7 series in my yard now, 02, (vandalized and piecing back together) 03, 08, 08 has bad trans(went out on way from dealer) some have been great, others....not so much, but I’ll probably keep buying them.

If u want a 7 series u can drive everyday you get an 1995?-2001 E38 . with some preventative maintenance they can be reliable and still feel very solid.
Not all bmws are bad. If you can work on them by yourself for the most part they can be very rewarding. You lose a lot more money when leasing as opposed to buying

These cars are not made to last because the factories know already most people lease them.
I know this may sound basic, BUT was the PCV system checked out and in good working order? I have seen quite a few cars burn a ton of oil due to a faulty PCV system.

That's how we are in rural New England as well. I've seen cars up here in VT that are half rust and burn a quart every thousand miles. Inspections have made them rarer though!

I'll really like you to read this,
After doing the valve seals and you still get oil in the intake your problem is the supercharger, get it resealed. The supercharger is know for letting oil through after some time and that what's you saw, as for the engine it's made of Alusil and what causes the cylinder to score is the Oil weight and the thermostat opening temp too high, get a lower temp thermostat and use 20w40 or 20w50 oil and the scoring will be a thing of the past. The engine doesn't have to be that expensive the engine is a derivative from the N62 v8. The block is exactly the same, apina only used a custom piston to reduced the compression. Get the N62 block, transfer your rotating assembly (piston and crankshaft) use the alpina heads and you've got a sound engine. Sorry I'm just seeing this now, i would have been of help if i saw this years ago 😅

Just buy a seal kit and rebuild the supercharger , that’s your oil burning issue .. not the motor .. look at the amount of oil in the intercooler , that’s all coming from the SC
What about the scored cylinder? If you have to redo one cyl, you probably have to do the whole 8. And then the cost of labor.

BMW's are pure garbage. Years ago I bought a "92" 5 series with 31000 miles on it. By the time it got to 67000 miles, the engine block cracked. You would have to pay me to drive one of these over engineered piles. They are pretty, but man, they have a bucket of built in breakdown installed.

7:13 the fact that there are more 7 series parked outside johnny's garage than i've seen driving in the past year is a good enough reason to make me never get one
I made the mistake of owning a 2016 535i. When I took it to get serviced, I asked the BMW mechanic what he saw the most for repairs. He showed me the servicing line and it was three 750’s in a row.

BMW's 4.4 V8 is their answer to the Northstar V8, horribly flawed.
They are COMPLETE SHIT!!! They truly are. Don't get me wrong they're nice, but the engines are one of the worst I've ever seen. I work for a salvage yard and every E65/E66 we have ever bought ALL had bad engines

Had a 2008 750 for two years. Loved that car, but spent $9000 on a bunch of minor repairs. Got rid of it before I had to replace the transmission and valve covers. Between repairs and depreciation, would have cost less to lease a new one.

alb12345672 yes they are! I have a 2008 Lexus LS460 and it’s been flawless for two years now. Just regular maintenance on the smooth V8! 130k miles now which is nothing for a Lexus. I also have an ES330 with 232,000 and it’s just as flawless. I wanna find a GS as well, preferably the 430 or 460 with the v8s.
Same, currently have a 2009 750li and I got quoted 5k for replacing 1 of my rear air springs. Not to mention the headlight bulbs on these things cost 80 bucks each lol. Super nice cars to drive. but expensive as hell to fix.
Buying reliable cars wouldn’t be a good thing for his channel though.

Honestly the engine bay is big enough to take even a 7.4 under the hood...it's make to take a v12 so...I would...the issue comes with the wiring since the 7 series has so much wire hair, it could present one hell of a headache and many things won't work after the swap
IIya PimpDaddy agreed. But let’s say you put a LS under the hood and were able to get it to work... could that engine get this big bitch down the road and still make it perform?? Also i know corvette has a super charged version of the LS, that would definitely work.
Frederick Behn let me put it to you this way. There are many types of LS engines out there. You can go fro the 5.3 all the way up to the lt4 with 700hp. Plus the engine tunes for them and the forced induction kits are off the charts. So you can make it go down the road BETTER than that bmw did brand new.
This mechanic of yours man jhonny is a really honest guy you can see how he instantly says “ im gonna refund your money cause i didnt fix it” and then when you said you were gonna dump it, you can see him feel bad like “ its my fault” wish we had people like him here in spain

Sadly I had a great mech that retired 4 years ago. He wouldnt chard for time or parts if it didn't fix the issue.
I'd feel bad for him too when he'd refuse payment. Sad maybe is the wrong word, he reassured me that he was a good guy, that loved his job and reputation.
He was my mech for almost 20 years, cos I couldn't be bothered finding a new decent one, I just started leasing instead of buying 4 yearolds and getting 6 years out of them. Which is what Ive done since I dot my licence.
It costs a bit more but I don't need a mech, peace of mind is nice, plus having a new car is alright.
He calls himself a mechanic an goes and hones an aluminum cylinder wall ruining the engine. He might be an honest part changer but not a real mechanic...
@@nicolascrescimone I agree. If oil is seeping past the rings, then you'd need to bore it and put in a new piston and rings. At the very least new, bigger rings. The cylinder wall was definitely worn down, I have no clue what would make him think the rings would somehow magically seat on a worn cylinder bore
Disable the spark plug for suspected cylinder and see if the smoke stops. MY guess is and was before any work was done was the compressor as you had all kinds of oil after it in your intakes. Remove the super charger and drive the car. See if the smoke goes away.
Thanks hoovie. Been a fan for a while. That's why car dealership are selling bmw of that version in very cheap prices. We decided to buy a Ford Taurus 07. It's crappy but at least the fix is not expensive.

In order to score (and re-score) that cylinder wall, that engine has eaten something Fe based, and prolly pretty hard. I suspect bits of ball bearing metal from one tossed off the blower ... They have embedded in the piston crown shoulder or skirt and are grinding the wall away. But they are also maybe going through the rest of the engine too. So yeah, the proof is the cyl wall issue. The engine is toast :(
