I never knew about Rhodes, Chalmers & Rhodes doing background vocals for all those RnB hits. That's a great piece of musical history. Thanks Chance B!

Thanks, Chance B, for reminding me of another artist, and the wonderful story, behind some of my favorite music.

Ann Peebles is and always will be one of the great R&B singers. Willie Mitchell & Don Bryant were both prolific writers. The Hi Records story is one that will go down as one of the last great southern soul labels. Thanks for posting this episode Mike Boone. It brought back many memories. Bless up. ❤️🙏🏾

When Hi Records folded, Motown acquired the Hi catalogue in 1982 and distributed through Motown where it continued throughout the 1980’s. By the early 1990’s, Motown sold off the Hi Records catalogue to another distributor which is now Fat Possum Records, part of Orchard Music which now owns the Hi catalogue.
During the Hi Records acquisition, Motown re-released a series of classic albums like Al Green and Ann Peebles when they were on Hi and reissued on the Motown label.

I agree. Today's youth don't even know who she is. But if they are looking for real singers maybe they will discover Ann Peebles. 🙏🏿

Another excellent episode! I LOVE that Hi Records sound and wished that it had lasted longer! I'm just dumbfounded that these excellent hard hitting songs she made charted so low! I have all of her Hi records and listen to them all the time!

What’s interesting, in 1982, Motown Records acquired the Hi Records catalogue following its demise in 1981 after Cream Records shut down Hi, and reissued many of their albums that were on Hi, and distributed by Motown.

@@Musicradio77Network I remember that. I had a couple of Al Green Greatest Hits with that Motown label on there at it just didn't seem right. That hard southern soul music on the Motown label.

@@marvelousmartian5379 I agree. That gritty, greasy & hard records that Hi produced should have never been in the hands of ppl that clearly didn't know how to market that sound. Perhaps Tamla/Motown UK would know what to do with that music. The US clearly didn't know.
It was clearly a money grab. Not realizing that ppl really liked what Hi was about. True lovers of Black music & not studio manufactured gook (for lack of a better word).

Elvis Presley went to see Syl Johnson’s R&B revue while taking a break from movies at his hometown of Memphis. A very young Al Green opened the show prompting Elvis to tell Syl, that young man is going to be a huge star one day !

Thank you so much for this amazing channel. The type of groove Willie Mitchell used on 20-75 & Buster Brown, and that Booker T used on Mo' Onions and Boot-Leg, and that JB used on Soul Food and Mashed Potatoes ... that groove took over almost every genre by the late 60s, and was hinted at in 1950s NOLA R&B like Tipitina and Carnival Day, as well as Bo Diddley, *but what were JB, Booker T and Willie Mitchell listening to between 1960 and 1962 that may have inspired their take on it?* To ask it a different way, what were the "missing link" tracks, not mentioned here, that I'm missing in trying to put the timeline together? Thanks in advance for any help. What I'd dearly love would be a whole video on this channel talking about the evolution of this type of "proto-funk/boogaloo beat/swung 16th" groove.

And speaking of Hi Records, in 1982, Hi ended their distribution deal with Cream Records, Motown Records acquired the Hi Records catalogue, and re-released all of their albums that includes Al Green and Ann Peebles from Hi, and it was later distributed under the Motown label. That last for maybe a year until Motown ended their distribution with Hi Records, and that’s the end of the Hi Records story for now.
Motown was best known for the Four Tops, Diana Ross, The Supremes, The Temptations, Smokey Robinson, The Miracles, Stevie Wonder, and just to name a few, but the Hi Records catalogue under Motown didn’t work.
