Thank you so much for this amazing channel. The type of groove Willie Mitchell used on 20-75 & Buster Brown, and that Booker T used on Mo' Onions and Boot-Leg, and that JB used on Soul Food and Mashed Potatoes ... that groove took over almost every genre by the late 60s, and was hinted at in 1950s NOLA R&B like Tipitina and Carnival Day, as well as Bo Diddley, *but what were JB, Booker T and Willie Mitchell listening to between 1960 and 1962 that may have inspired their take on it?* To ask it a different way, what were the "missing link" tracks, not mentioned here, that I'm missing in trying to put the timeline together? Thanks in advance for any help. What I'd dearly love would be a whole video on this channel talking about the evolution of this type of "proto-funk/boogaloo beat/swung 16th" groove.

These are fantastic! I know that Jerrio's Boo-Ga-Loo came in 1965 and is considered the beginning of the boogaloo craze, but it doesn't have the drum part that people call the "boogaloo beat". A Lee Dorsey cut that has a similar beat is the 1968 version of Lottie Mo, but I'm looking for tracks that have that beat from the early 60s - the earlier the better. Here's a guy demonstrating the textbook boogaloo beat - but anything close to that feel would do. czcams.com/video/rGTps8pBjIw/video.html A really great example of it is Otis Redding's Mr. Pitiful, but that's 1964. Still, that's before the word boogaloo came into use. There's another question you might be able to answer. Where did the term boogaloo come in? Was it a dance first? Or a beat? I remember hearing Mockingbird on the radio when I was a little girl. Funny that Charlie was a gospel singer but didn't know what "call and response" was 😳. I don't know that I believe Inez's story. They were a very attractive pair of siblings. Aretha's cover of Mockingbird is a good one.
