Hope it got you to laugh at least once. If you enjoyed this, it'd mean a lot if you considered helping me out over on Patreon. As a fellow vanilla ice cream lover, I can certainly attest to the value of sincerity. Final Fantasy V is an excellent example (and an especially interesting case considering what its franchise would become), though the series most emblematic of this kind of story and its value, I think, might be Dragon Quest. The worlds it presents are all but void of cynicism, its heroes unambiguously virtuous and its villains the very embodiments of evil, and the way it consistently presents and plays with this traditional approach lends the series a sort of warmth, but also a life-affirming conviction. For over thirty years, through thick and thin, while other (also incredible) series have questioned their identities and experimented with new philosophies, Dragon Quest hasn't wavered in its confidence that that there's a tangible goodness in the world that we can believe in, and (at the risk of sounding like an advertisement) I think there's something special about that.

      If you want the perspective of someone who's been playing the series for over thirty years, I'd recommend this fantastic spoiler-free review: czcams.com/video/4iTbUGItU0s/video.html. It's on the longer side, but I think it's a great way to find out whether Dragon Quest is for you.

    You've managed to hone in on just why I hold Final Fantasy V close to my heart. Compared to so many modern day roleplaying games, FFV is straightforward and unapologetic...but it _isn't_ arrogant nor does it exaggerate the way a parody would. FFV is akin to Superman at his best; both are inspirational and both don't require window dressing to get their message across.
    Also, I rather enjoy this game's overall aesthetic.

    Final Fantasy V is my favorite Final Fantasy, tied with VIII. I found this video because a friend of mine linked it after I got made reading about old retrospective reviews of V by GameSpot, where they said the characters are "paper-thin" and "unlikable." You calling them lovable and talking about how the characters genuinely care about one another was the palette cleanser I needed.
    This is a wonderful video, and the "a himbo, princess, genderqueer pirate and the last good boomer" had me fucking rolling! Faris is my favorite, but I love all of them. I'm sure that's not surprising given my name. ~.^

      Deconstructionism has utterly ruined modern storytelling; it's become nothing more than a tool, used by uncreative hacks, to shoehorn insipid [current day] social messaging into what is _supposed_ to be escapism. It's inherently cynical, and as Codex so well put it, feels like it's "apologizing for its own existence". To hell with that. If a story is told with cynicism rather than sincerity, then it just doesn't get my money, simple as.

      @thethrashyone This. And these problems range from all over the place. At worst, it's just liberal politics shoved in EVERY aspect of what's being written and making it lame. But more commonly, it's the self awareness of modern day media. All the winks and waves at the camera, trying to get a cheap laugh at the cost of immersive storytelling and world building just makes me sick. And it's EVERYWHERE now. Galuf is truly the greatest character in the entire series. The combat is the best in the series by a mile and the world/level design is amazing. FF5 is one of the greats in classic JRPGs. Each character develops over the course of the game into a highly personalized superhero(ine) all their own, but is also part of a greater whole. By the end, you have a team that is exactly the way you wanted them to be, and there are almost limitless paths and destinations in this game.
    The story is uncomplicated to put it diplomatically, but it has satisfying story beats, and it still feels genuine when it drops the lighthearted tone and gets serious.
    That opening of the Decisive Battle track with the crunchy drum samples is arguably still the best opening to a final battle in Final Fantasy.

    I & VI - bold, new direction for the series and the genre, paired with a very formulaic story that gets very complicated by the end. Very rough around the edges, but still enjoyable years afterwards.
    II & VII - expands on the ideas of the previous game, adds much more freedom for customization in combat, has a more "mass appeal" feel to it, the characters aren't defined by their jobs
    III and VIII - Continues the refinements from the previous game, but also explored weirder and more unique ideas in terms of aestethics, characters and gameplay.
    V and IX - Takes the lessons from the previous games and tells a classical, goofy and light-hearted story with a few mature and dark moments sprinkled in. Character designs very clearly portray the archetypical Final Fantasy jobs and gameplay reflects that as well, being very easy to understand for begginers.
    IV and X - heavily character focused, the ludonarrative is much more connected to the actual narrative. This is my favourite type of FF, as the gameplay limitations allow for more fun strategies and the characters in these games have very unique skillsets.
    Just a thing I noticed ;)

    V is definitely the most charming of the series, and not just because it's comparatively antiquated or because of the 16-bit graphics - its characters are fun, the battle system is one of the best ever conceived by human minds (Hiroyuki Ito) and the music is incredible. It's Sakaguchi preparing for the greater depth to come by throwing caution to the wind and going "fuck it - crystals and knights and JOBS, motherfuckers!" and having a blast. Good stuff man, though it hit me right in the "I'm old" when you mentioned being in 4th grade when IX came out. It's weird how there's only 5-6 years difference which doesn't seem like much as an adult, but it's like "Man I was in high school when I played IX" and boy does that make me feel weird.
    But regarding how similar those first games were, it was even more drastic considering the original US release order. Final Fantasy IV felt like an evolution of Final Fantasy 1, and then Final Fantasy VI a natural evolution of IV, and VII an evolution of that. II was a weird departure where they abandoned traditional level-up mechanics, III the introduction of the class system, with IV being a bit of a return to form, but a much larger cast of characters. V in many ways feels more like a sequel to III, and I can't help but wonder if maybe that's one of the reasons it became a favorite in Japan.
    That said, Final Fantasy V was also the first game I ever played on emulator. My brother came home from College with his PC filled with all kinds of wonderful College kid games and all of his College kid anime and stuff, and I was able to play this long lost Final Fantasy that never released in the States. It was an interesting time.
    Always wanted to go back and do another full playthrough start to finish, but sadly I've always been distracted away from it.

    Along the same lines, sometimes, in food, it helps to try individual ingredients on their own, so that you can identify and appreciate said ingredients in a complete dish. In that way, games like this help me identify and appreciate the classic components within other, more deconstructionist, games.

    Yeah in my opinion, Final Fantasy 5 was the best one. It just has this feeling the other Final Fantasy games doesn't have. It feels the most lighthearted and their sense of adventure and I found the ending credit scene to be absolutely adorable with Bartz (or Butz), Lenna and Faris riding on chocobo and Krile riding on her dragon and exploring the land after they had saved it.

      Knight is OP through the whole game. Red mage is pretty overpowered and versatile early on, but falls off pretty hard around the mid game. Summoner is fantastic through out. Monk is really good until it isn't. A white mage is basically required. Bare in mind tho that even some of the worst jobs are worth doing for the abilities they grant. Berserker is terrible, but having +21 STR and +25 Stamina to Freelancer is incredible. Everything has some kind of use.

    ff5 is the only FF game that I play at least once every year with random job generator because of its endless replay value (least played ones being FF2, FFx-2 , FF6 and I couldn't finish FF13 and its sequels I hate everything in that game).
    I miss the old epic adventure ancient/medieval sagas with some fantasy/extraterrestrial flavour like crystal world/void dimension/elemental world. worlds like FF3, FF4 and FF5. I just hope FF16 follows this approach and be an epic open world crystal saga with improved job system again.

    • @dukefleed4280
      @dukefleed4280 Před 3 lety +1

      @@Ragitsu FF IX is amazing but its fixed character class system has no skill customization and little replay value I finished it twice with different party members and I got the excalibur II on the second run. I like FF5(job skill combinations), FF7(materia combinations), FF11(job/sub job system) and FF12 ZA(combining 2 jobs for each character) more because of customization options and amount of strategies in the skill system. it really depends on what you want from the game. is it gameplay, story, art and music or just an open world to roam around. for me its gameplay and replay value. a good example is FF12, the original ps2 version allows you to learn everything with everyone it gets so boring and brainless. on the other hand FF12 ZA allows you to chose 2 jobs for each character making it much better strategically and provides much better experience by limiting the skill board also encourages player to try the game again with different job combinations.

    • @sigurdtheblue
      @sigurdtheblue Před 3 lety

      @@dukefleed4280 Zodiac (Job System) Age also added in two great extra challenge modes, which the game desperately needed since hunts also get on the stale side when combined with how rare encounters were also basically like repeatable hunts. The weak mode is the ultimate strategic challenge.

  • @metastase895
    @metastase895 Před 2 lety +2

    FF5 has always been my favorite of the main series together with - believe it or not - FFX-2. If you think about it, both games have this adventurous light hearted tone that's unlike other FFs ands of course both also share their version of the character class visual transformation system.
    But there is one particular thing most people overlook when it comes to FF5. It not only has the best pacing in the series (a byproduct of being main story light), it has the most ingenious method for offering and presenting main character story arcs. Not many players realize that after various points on the main story, you can access character specific development and story beats by going back to previous places or in some cases going to completely optional towns. In other words, the character development is optional in order to not bring the game's pacing down but it IS there as a reward for those who explore.
    Which brings us full circle as to why FF5 is my favorite even beyond its gameplay. I think 99,9% of all video game stories are trash. At best they may have a few interesting moments but IMO not worth the dozens or sometimes hundreds of hours of badly written plot/characters I don't care about. So you see, it's just that FF5 has better pacing. It's that NOT forcing badly written melodrama down my throat is a feature.
    But let's suppose you disagree. Let's say a more elaborate story like from FF6 onwards adds to your experience. My question is: how many times can you go through that same static story without losing the entertainment value? I think the best example here is FF8. The 1st CD is crammed full of dynamic NPCs and little events, all of which are updated after each story beat and it's clear a lot of thought and care went into it. And then the 2nd CD is almost as bad as FF13. Even if we assume the entirety of the story is worth experiencing once, would you say it's even worth replaying FF8 in its entirety when the best stuff is all on the 1st CD? I'd argue that only the 1st CD is worth your time despite being a massive FF8 fan.
    And that's with a clear case. Unlike FF8, most other FF games have their little highs and massive lows all over the place so you can't cut it relatively clean like with FF8. Would I replay FF7, 9, 10, 12, etc? Maybe once every 10 years but most likely no. FF5 though? Easy to replay every year or so.

    6 years ago I remember beating ff5 getting all magic including dark arts, mastering all jobs, and getting all bestiary entries along the way. None of this would have been possible without searching and looking things up and learning neat facts, like stealing Ragnarok on one of neo exdeath targets. Good times.

    I think one of the biggest reasons why this job system works so well in encouraging experimentation is that you don't actually ever need to grind to beat this game since all of the classes, even at their lowest levels, still come with the most essential stats and abilities that allows spontaneous job-switching when faced with a specific foe to make a significant difference. You could go the entire game with one character focused exclusively on melee combat, yet they'll still be more than able to pull their weight if you suddenly feel the need for another spell-caster on your team at the tail-end of your journey. Considering how this game's difficulty has been somewhat overblown, I feel this excellent aspect of the job system can't be overstated.
