I can't say I've been the biggest fan of Classic Final Fantasy. I enjoyed 6 but the others just didn't do much for me for one reason or another and for the longest time I didn't even give 5 a real chance, thinking it was going to be one of the more forgettable games in the series.
After putting some time into the GBA version, BOOOOY was I wrong and I couldn't be happier to be wrong. It's probably the most overlooked game in the series now that I think about it. While the story is simple and straightforward, the cast is charming and above all, FF5 is possibly the most fun gameplay-wise thanks to its job system. It's more or less a WAY better FF3 and the amount of customization is incredible and stuff always feels like it's moving forward. A fantastic classic JRPG that I highly recommend anyone to check out, maybe even as your first game in the series if you're open to experimentation.

Since you're looking at FFVI next, you might also want to include some of the mods that fans have made.
      My favorite 3 are:
      1) General Leo Lives mod(Shadow dies at Thasma instead of Leo and the story is changed to reflect this)
      2) A Realm Reborn(Basically Hard Mode)
      3) FFVI: T-Edition(This mod is legendary. It is to FF6 what Final Mix is to the Kingdom Hearts games, and that's STILL selling it far too short.)
Here's some additions the mod makes:
Shadow dual wields naturally meaning you no longer need to waste a relic slot for a Genji Glove.
Cyan's SwordTech/Bushido charge speed has been sped WAY up making it much more viable.
Locke's Steal is MUCH more effective.
Strago's Lores have been rebalanced so not only he gets more lores, but the more useless ones were removed and replaced with better ones.
Gau has been completely overhauled. He no longer needs to be in the Veldt to learn new Rages, but any where there is a monster encounter. In addition, his Leap command has been removed replaced with Attack. In order to learn new Rages, you simply need to win the monster encounter with Gau in your party.
Alternate costumes for all your characters that are not only cosmetic, but also grant various stat bonuses too.
A SHITLOAD of side stories as well as Pubs issuing optional side quests
Johnny, you owe it to yourself to look at this mod during/after you're done with FFVI vanilla.

While it's story isn't terribly special, I did enjoy the class game play and the humor for this game thanks to the GBA version. Final Fantasy V is my personal favorite of the SNES trilogy, maybe alongside IV. The characters and plot aren't the highlights, yeah, but the Job System and the music more than make up for it. On the subject of the GBA version, I tried to play it with a sound restoration patch once, but it caused an unbearable amount of slow down, so I just played it as is. Of the games ported to the GBA, I think this one got the best treatment. The palette is a little washed out, but nowhere near as much as VI, and I personally think the soundtrack survived the transition to the GBA mostly unscathed. What thing I really enjoy about FF5, besides its very charming, and wholesome characters, would easily be how easy it is to break. FF5, due to the insane job and ability customization, can go from really hard to laughably easy or vice versa. The player has so much potential for subsquent play throughs and challenge runs

Fun fact. Tetsuya Takahashi and his eventual wife, Kaori Tanaka (better known by her pen name, Soraya Saga) both worked on this game as part of the field graphic and map designer teams respectively.
After also working on Final Fantasy VI, they also wrote a script for Final Fantasy VII that was considered too dark and said script was used as the basis for the game, Xenogears. And then of course, they left Square to found Monolith Soft and that's how we eventually got Xenogears and then the Nintendo acquisition with Xenoblade Chronicles and other Monolith Soft properties and also support development work on other in-house Nintendo projects like Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Splatoon, and Animal Crossing: New Horizons.
I will just say that I am happy with how things turned out for Final Fantasy VII's production. Both for the Final Fantasy series and the new Xeno series. I loved both FFVII and Xenogears, so I'm glad both scripts were allowed to exist even though there were sadly problems with the latter's production that affected the final product.
Anyway, loved this Johnny VS. video of Final Fantasy V. Can't wait to see your video for FFVI next.

Little note: Butz being afraid of heights does make a touching return when he, enveloped in rage, flies the airship around the world while screaming. He was so angry he overturned his fear of heights on a dime, which I can see people missing, and I thought that was a nice touch, even if it doesn’t have a BIGGER plot significance. But also thinking back on RPGs, this was back when non-important side traits to characters would be saved for manuals or omitted directly, so props to old Square for adding little personality quirks at no direct gain.
Also, when I first won the game, only Krile was KOd, so she’s the one who stayed behind, and after all the pain she goes through with Galuf, I felt so bad but I thought it was fitting. I didn’t know it was my fault for mot reviving her, I thought it was forced plot. A month later I replayed the final fight and Lenna and Krile were KOd and realized the ending changed. It still blows my mind because Final Fantasy has yet to do something similar as far as I know.

Happy 30th Anniversary to Final Fantasy V! Fun Fact: Final Fantasy V, Megaman 5 and Dragon Quest V all released in the same year, back when Square, Capcom and Enix were pumping out sequels back to back.
Here’s My Review of Final Fantasy V
Definitely that odd underrated game that’s overshadowed by FF4 and FF6 but it’s my personal 3rd Favorite since it’s the peak of the Job System. I love it for it’s lighthearted moods and silly humor. However this game has it’s serious moments and it’s even the first to include optional Superbosses such as Omega and Shinryu if I remember correctly. This is also the first game where almost all of the cast is female excluding Bartz and Galuf. The thing I love this most is each character having a unique sprite for a specific job and as a lover of old school classic games I appreciate the hardwork Square did drawing each unique sprite for specific jobs. Do I think Square should’ve released it despite the “complicated job mechanics” Yes because lots of games back in the days were hard and the game clearly explains the jobs system when you receive the first jobs and in the first town.

I was surprised at how much I enjoyed this one with how indifferent I often am to job systems in games (or I guess just games where you're more or less thrown a party blank slates to fully customize however you see fit). I still probably prefer VI over it, but from the classic lineup, I'd still probably consider V the most solid overall.

After III and IV got DS remakes I always hoped this game would get the same treatment for the DS or 3DS but it never happened. I believe though since we have near unlimited time that in spite of the Pixel Remasters a 3D remake may one day be possible.
Also if there is a 3D remake, do what III did and have the Job clothes in the overworld.

My first introduction to Final Fantasy was the 5th thanks to a video that spliced a part of a compilation of fan made music in NND that had a mashup of FF5's battle theme and Cirno's Theme from Touhou. Loved the soundfont so much, I found out that it came from FF5, and started playing the game and the series onward. (Just realized that was my intro to Touhou as well, so that's awesome)

I'm glad this job system still lives on in Bravely Default and even now going back to it, there's very little that's aged poorly in comparison. • @bensell982

My Personal favorite Final Fantasy game. I have to agree with Johnny on the gba version being the best version. Not for the added jobs or post game content, btw only one of the new jobs is post game exclusive, but rather for a glitch that makes leveling up jobs a complete non issue.
It's been nicknamed the Mover Quicksave glitch though it works with other enemy types as well Mivers are just the most famous ones with it. Little explanation. In the final dungeon there's a very rare enemy spawn called Movers. On a normal playthrough your pretty unlikely find them in a normal playthrough and are very comparable to Metal Slimes in Dragon Quest in that if you manage to defeat them you get a crap ton of money and a lot of job points no exp though.
How the glitch works is after reloading a quicksave random encounters are scripted for awhile. Whether it's for a certain number of encounters or until you leave the room I'm not sure, but it's not important. What's important is the second encounter in the final dungeon will be Movers. Through using this glitch maxing out every job will only take around an hour.

Love that exploit. I've been playing through the SNES version and the RNG there seems a bit exploitable too. I've noticed whenever you do a hard reset and load a game, you're more likely to encounter the rarest encounter in your first few battles. It isn't a guaranteed thing like in the GBA release, but you learn to use it to your advantage with save states and the like.

It shows sorta my preferences, when this has always been my favorite of the SNES lineup. I always hold up Final Fantasy to the balance of 3 core pillars; World design, story and combat. A Final Fantasy worth playing has to have at least one of these 3 pillars checked. IV I think is largely carried by it's story, but it's enough to keep it up. VI has some amazing story chops and exploration is made fun by the open-ended second half and cutscene-hunting with party comps, but I think it misses the mark on combat being so busted up as you would go into in your review. V I think always had a good blend of the elements. It may not have had some of the highs of any of the others (Aside from the job system), but I can't say it ever really lacks any of the elements either. It's story is simple, yet it's charming, mostly held together by what I think is an endearing cast going through some rather basic story beats. The class-system is incredibly fun to play, it makes it a game that get's more and more fun on repeat playthroughs. Lastly, while it never really branches into sandbox the way VI does, there's stuff to discover and worth looking for, giving you a break from the main route to just adventure around. Would I say V is the best SNES Final Fantasy? No. That'd just kinda feel irresponsible with how VI turned out. It has the ambition and the technique to handle those ambitions gracefully. Saying it falters, because it's a little easy to break would be just stupid. However, while my brain says that, my heart will always come back to V. It and IX, those are the two that will always stand as the definitive Final Fantasy experience.

I love the way this game handles the Freelancer job by giving it the best stats and innate abilities of every job you've mastered, plus giving you an extra ability slot. It really allows you to become the culmination of everything you've mastered during your adventure.
Compare this to the Bravely games, which still has the effect of "freelancers eventually become an ultimate final job" but it makes zero difference which jobs you master, and freelancers have their own skill set that takes up a slot whether you want it to or not. It's just not quite as satisfying.
