- Today I talk about how to find images for an engaging collage layout and where these images go. I am using my latest altered book for this collage layout. It is an altered book made in a child's board book.
In collage, "how do I know where my images go?" is the most common question I hear. What images work together and how and why? Stay tuned as I break down my process in the altered book layout using original, vintage paper ephemera.
PRINTABLE SCANS: Many of the images in today's video including the moths, holy cards, and vintage birds are available as printable scans on Etsy. You can find them here:

Mmmm just what I needed on a cold Friday night. Thanks Kelly!
Thanks bunches, Catherine. I was just thinking that it is getting to be wine-mulling season. Hmmmm.
Great process video, as usual! I was up and down with all your choices - that yellow bird made my heart skip a beat- and calmed right down at the end. What fun!
Thank you, Regina. I hated to choose. I really was leaning toward the blue flower but sometimes the book wants something else. 😎😎
So enjoyed this metamorphosis
Thanks bunches. Altered book layouts are very, very planned but I also make layouts in my art journals that are spontaneous. You learn different things. Kelly
Thank you for sharing your process. It really helps.
Diane, you are so very welcome! Kelly
Thankyou,really inspiring approach!
Thank you, Amanda. Happy making! Kelly
This is so beautiful! I loved the way you explained the whole process of choosing the elements for the layout! It’s amazing, Kelly ❤️💙💚💛🖤🧡💗💜♥️
Thank you, Alexandra. It is always a mystery for me, too. Kelly
I always enjoy watching and hearing how you choose your images for your layouts! I have a board book I have been sanding down and prepping for an altered book. I like the idea of backing each page with text! I think that is exactly what I will do with mine! Thanks for sharing!
Hi Susan. Yeah, I used to sand mine and peel and break a nail and cuss until I realised I can just cover the things with text. I still sand sometimes but it is fun to have the option. Kelly
@@BookandPaperArts that is good to know! So if I understand correctly, I can just scruff up the pages to get the gloss off and then adhere the text right to it without putting a layer of gesso first? That means I will be ready to go a lot quicker! Thank you!
@@MissDaisyParsley Pretty much. It is way easier than peeling.
Kelly, what a really cool layout this was. I loved the little girl, and it's always so nifty to hear your thoughts behind why/what you do on your pages. This little board book looks scrumptious, and I have several tucked away, that I need to get back out. You've greatly inspired me. Thank you.
Hi Lynn. Yes, you should make an altered board book. I am working on a new online course about making altered board books in several different ways. It started off small and is getting away from me so I am going to take my time and try it out in January. Also, these board books can be turned into art journals. Keep me posted!
@@BookandPaperArts I certainly will, my creative friend!
I love you you’re fantastic x
Golly, thank you so much!
